Thoothukudi Collector's absence at grievances redress meeting irks farmers; stage sit-in protest
Farmers from Thoothukudi district staged a sit-in protest at the Collectorate on Thursday (June 19, 2025), following the absence of the District Collector at the monthly grievances redress meeting.
The meeting, which was presided over by District Revenue Officer (DRO) A. Ravichandran witnessed a brief commotion, when a section of farmers sat on the floor of the meeting hall, raising concerns about the absence of the District Collector. The DRO explained that senior officials had arrived in Tiruchendur regarding the consecration ceremony of the temple and this had prompted the Collector to attend their visit.
However, the farmers argued that the meeting must be conducted under the leadership of the District Collector and claimed that any proceedings without the Collector would be ineffective. They also pointed out the absence of Revenue Divisional Officers (RDO's) of Kovilpatti, Tiruchendur and Thoothukudi and noted that divisional-level grievance meetings had not been conducted for the past two months.
The DRO assured that RDO's would be instructed to attend all future meetings, and directed the officials to ensure that the divisional-level meetings are conducted regularly.
Meanwhile, another section of farmers urged that the meeting should continue. This led to a brief commotion and officials tried to pacify the agitated farmers.
Despite the efforts to calm the situation, the agitation continued. The officials further contacted the Collector, who spoke to one of the farmers over the phone and it helped to diffuse the situation. The meeting resumed after a delay of 45 minutes.
At the meeting, the farmers raised several key demands which included an integrated plan to control weeds in agricultural lands and measures for the distribution of relief assistance to crops affected by the 2024 monsoon. They demanded that milk producers be paid fair and fixed price and wage of the employees at the milk producers cooperative society to be increased.
Farmers from Kulathur and Sivagnanapuram sought insurance compensation for shallots crops for the 2023-2024 season to be released. Additionally, they called for a Forest Extension Centre in Sathankulam, proper water flow to the tail end of the Korampallam tank and strengthening of the bunds along the 'Uppar' canal. They also demanded the speedy completion of works at Maruthur 'Melakaal' canal.
Addressing the grievances, the DRO said that a subsidy of ₹800 is currently being provided for farmers for summer ploughing and for weed control measures. He added that flood damage assessments have been completed and that necessary audit work have also been finalised for the distribution of relief funds. The Forest Extension Centre at Sathankulam would be inspected and necessary action would be taken accordingly, noted Mr. Ravichandran. He further said that subsidised chilli and jasmine saplings would be distributed through the Horticulture Department.

HM seeks people's support for success of ‘Yogandhra'
Vizianagaram: Home Minister and in-charge minister for Vizianagaram Vangalapudi Anitha, has called upon all stakeholders to work collectively to make the 'Yogandhra' programme a grand success. The initiative, part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to integrate yoga into daily life, aims to set a world record with five lakh people performing yoga at a single venue in Visakhapatnam on June 21. At a review meeting held at the Collectorate on Tuesday, Minister Anitha was joined by Revenue Minister Anagani Satya Prasad and Roads & Buildings Minister B C Janardhan Reddy. Minister Anitha stated that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was committed to conducting the programme with great prestige in line with the Prime Minister's call. She emphasised that the success of the event requires the support of every individual. She highlighted that yoga awareness programmes have been underway across the State for the past one month to mobilise public participation. She expressed confidence that the large-scale yoga session will draw national attention to Visakhapatnam and secure a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The Minister stressed the importance of shared responsibility among officials and public representatives in ensuring smooth execution. To facilitate the movement of participants, special buses will be arranged and essential amenities like washrooms mapped along the travel routes. Emergency medical services and traffic management plans are also in place. Heavy vehicles will be restricted on national highways to ensure free movement of buses. District Collector Dr B R Ambedkar announced that 36,000 participants from Vizianagaram district have been prepared, with a target to send at least 30,000 to Visakhapatnam. A total of 660 buses will operate on two routes, with each bus assigned a liaison officer. A special focus has been given to mobilising 15,000 hostel students through colleges, while the remaining participants are being arranged through DRDA and MEPMA. A trial run of transportation logistics is scheduled for June 19.

Udayanidhi Stalin orders resumption of free buses to Theni ‘uzhavar sandhai' after farmers' plea
Deputy Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin directed authorities to resume free transport facility for the farmers to bring their produce from their farms to the uzhavar sandhai in Theni on Monday. Submitting a petition, the farmers from Periyakulam region said that they raised vegetables, fruits and other horticultural goods and brought them to the sandhai in Theni. The government had suspended the free bus facility after the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the farmers transported their produce through their own personal vehicles or carried them in goods vehicle paying from their pocket. Hence, they urged the Deputy CM to consider their difficulties and redress them. The Deputy CM, who was here to take stock of the development works under way at the Collectorate, held discussions in the presence of Minister I Periasamy, senior IAS officials, including Additional Chief Secretary Pradeep Yadav, Additional Secretary R.V. Shajeevana, Collector Ranjith Singh and other officials. After consultations, he announced that the district administration would resume the free transport facility for the farmers. In the first phase, it was proposed to ply the buses from Periyakulam Panchayat Union limits covering Jayamangalam to Pinnathevanpatti, Chokkathevanpatti and Annanchi to Theni from today (June 16) onwards. From tomorrow (June 17), it was proposed to ply buses to carry the farm goods from Mayiladumparai panchayat union covering Kadamalaigundu to Nagalapuram. In an upbeat mood, the farmers thanked Mr Udayanidhi with folded hands. Expressing relief, a farmer Jafar Sadiq said that the government's swift action today would help many marginal farmers to save their hard earned money. Echoing similar views, Veeralakshmi another farmer said that the buses were plying pre-COVID19 and they were not able to get it resumed since then. 'I am very happy that the Deputy CM has given us such a big relief instantly,' she added. The Deputy CM gave away welfare assistance to 851 beneficiaries worth ₹13.49 crore in the presence of MP Thanga Tamil Selvan, MLAs Cumbum N Ramakrishnan, K.S. Saravana Kumar, A. Maharajan and other rural local body members. Earlier, while addressing the senior officials from various departments at the Theni Collectorate, Mr. Udayanidhi said that in the last four years, under the leadership of CM M.K. Stalin, they had fulfilled numerous promises made to the people. 'We will continue to do that in the next 10 months or so, after which the elections are due to the State,' he said and thanked the officials for playing the role of catalyst between the government and the people. On the occasion, the grievances of a Scheduled Tribe (ST) community from Periyakulam block were redressed and the basic needs were fulfilled. The Deputy CM gave away free pattas and kits to the beneficiaries.
