Officials told to take steps to save people from summer heat
Paderu (ASR District): Alluri Sitarama Raju district collector AS Dinesh Kumar has directed officials to set up shade nets at weekly markets (Shandies) in agency villages to protect people from the scorching summer heat.
During the 'Meekosam' public grievance redressal forum held at the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) office on Friday, the collector, along with other officials, received petitions from the public.
Addressing the gathering, collector Dinesh Kumar said that the region is experiencing extremely high temperatures. He asked officials to raise awareness among the public about heat wave precautions. He also instructed them to establish drinking water kiosks in villages and set up shade nets in weekly markets with the help of contractors. Additionally, he recommended setting up medical camps at these markets.
The collector further directed the District Water Management Agency (DWMA) officials to complete ongoing rainwater harvesting projects promptly. He advised planting saplings along roadsides, around schools, and in the premises of government offices to enhance greenery.
The collector also instructed officials to build water tanks for cattle and promote the PM Suryagarh Solar Power Scheme among the public.
To ensure a clean environment, the Collector called for a strict ban on the use of single-use plastics. He also stressed the implementation of the 'Swarnandhra Swachhandhra' cleanliness drive on the third Saturday of every month.

During the forum, women from Hattaguda village in Araku Valley mandal submitted a petition requesting the issuance of forest rights certificates. In Makavaram Panchayat of Munchingiputtu mandal, locals sought compensation for the damage to cashew orchards caused by recent rains. Residents of Arabiru village in Munchingiputtu mandal complained about the inconvenience caused by a nearby stone crusher and requested its closure. Residents of Tenkabuddi village in Ananthagiri mandal, led by G Apparao and S Chinnayya, requested the construction of a WBM road from Krishnapuram to Tenkabuddi.
District Medical and Health Officer Dr Jamal Basha, Deputy Director of Tribal Welfare L Rajani, ITDA Administrative Officer M Hemalatha, Rural Water Supply Engineer Jawahar Kumar, Divisional Panchayat Officer PS Kumar, and CPO SNRK Patnaik and others participated.

ASR dist sets target of 100% organic farming by 2028
Paderu (ASR District): Alluri Sitarama Raju district collector AS Dinesh Kumar has announced an ambitious plan to achieve 100% organic farming across the district by the year 2028. He urged farmers to make effective use of the agricultural machinery provided by the government to achieve significant progress in the agriculture sector. Addressing a meeting held at the Collectorate on Thursday with farmers who received farm machinery at 50% subsidy during the 2024–25 financial year, the collector emphasised the need for planning at the village secretariat level. He directed officials to conduct a survey to assess the actual requirement of farm equipment across various regions. The collector also interacted with farmers to understand the extent of organic farming being practiced and the use of chemical inputs such as urea, potash, and pesticides. Stressing the importance of awareness, he encouraged farmers to adopt sustainable and eco-friendly organic farming methods. He said that steps have already been taken to promote coffee cultivation across 30,000 acres this year. Additionally, under the Employment Guarantee Scheme, saplings of Maddi, Neredu, and Jackfruit will be distributed to farmers. He encouraged land-owning farmers to expand coffee cultivation in the district. District Agriculture Officer SBS Nand stated that a total of Rs 1.26 crore worth of agricultural machinery has been distributed to 351 farmers at a 50% subsidy. This includes Taiwan sprayers for 95 farmers, tractors for 29, power tillers for 59, brush cutters for 13, and power weeders for 155 farmers. Following the meeting, paddy seeds were also distributed to the farmers.

From ganja fields to green farms: Swabhiman anchal's silent transformation
1 2 Koraput: Once a hotbed of Maoist activity and illegal ganja cultivation, Swabhiman anchal in Malkangiri district is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Spanning 151 villages and nine panchayats, the remote tribal region is now embracing sustainable agriculture and self-reliance. The turnaround is being driven by the Malkangiri administration and the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), which have introduced targeted schemes to replace cannabis farming and curb distress migration. "Ganja cultivation was rampant, and agriculture meant little more than small patches of ragi, with migration of villagers in search of work," said Malkangiri collector Asish Iswar Patil. "We took up the challenge with a structured long-term plan, emphasising alternative vegetable farming. At first, villagers resisted. But with consistent dialogue and demonstration, they began to see the benefits." What began with just 11 farmers under a cluster farming model has expanded to 752 individuals across 68 villages. Farmers now grow groundnuts, brinjal, beans, chilli, onion, cauliflower, bitter gourd, pumpkin and sweet corn using organic inputs and bio-pesticides. "The produce is sold in local markets such as Paparmetla, Badapada, Chitrakonda, and several BSF camps and govt-run residential schools," said Haladhar Sabar, project administrator, ITDA Malkangiri. Iswari Golari from Nakamamudi village is one of the beneficiaries. "I earned nearly Rs 80,000 during the last rabi season by growing brinjal and chilli on my 1.5-acre plot," he said. Similarly, 28-year-old Dhanpati Pangi of Potel village, who once migrated to Andhra Pradesh as a labourer, now grows green chilli on his land. "I feel proud to be self-reliant," he said. Patil said to sustain the shift, the administration has ramped up infrastructure, building check dams and lift irrigation points while distributing free seeds and offering comprehensive technical training. Under the Socio-Economic Transformation and Upliftment (SETU) scheme, agriculture production clusters (APCs) were launched during the 2024-25 rabi and summer seasons. These clusters now span 1,350 acres. Dragon fruit is now being cultivated on 37.5 acres of land by 36 farmers — an indicator of the area's growing agri-entrepreneurial spirit. "To further boost income and market reach, value addition and processing units are being set up for turmeric, tamarind and jackfruit, helping transform raw produce into profitable products with strong market linkages," said the collector said. "We no longer need to hide from the law," said Biswanath Kinchai, a farmer from Papermetla. "Now, we work with pride. Our land gives us life."
