From daily wagers to entrepreneurs: tribal women of Bhadrachalam lead millet and sanitary revolution

KHAMMAM: What started with eight women and a bag of millets in Bhadrachalam is rippling through the tribal community. Trained by the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), these former daily wagers now run a dual enterprise: crafting nutrient-packed biscuits sold near the temple and manufacturing vital sanitary napkins supplied to schools. Their success isn't just income; it's a beacon inspiring countless others. Eight tribal women received training at Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, and began producing a range of biscuits made of millets, including foxtail, little millet, kodo millet, finger millet and jowar. They have also ventured into sanitary napkin production, manufacturing around 40,000 napkins in three months. These are being supplied to Gurukul schools in the region, with each pack priced affordably at Rs 28.

Indiramma housing scheme to cover 20 lakh families: Telangana housing minister

HYDERABAD : Housing minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy on Friday announced that three more phases of the Indiramma housing scheme will be rolled out to benefit 20 lakh poor families over the next three-and-a-half years. Speaking at a programme in Peddapalli district, he said that in the first phase, 4.5 lakh houses have already been sanctioned, with 3,500 units allocated per assembly constituency. Additionally, 10,000 Chenchu families and beneficiaries in ITDA areas have been granted homes over and above the standard quota. Reaffirming the Congress govt's commitment, the minister assured that all 20 lakh houses will not only be sanctioned but also constructed within the current term—unlike the previous BRS govt, which promised 2-BHK units but failed to deliver. Listing the welfare measures of the govt, Ponguleti said the Congress is also continuing beneficial schemes introduced by the previous regime. He urged people to support Congress in the upcoming local body polls, as they did in the 2023 assembly elections. Highlighting reforms, he said, "We scrapped the Dharani portal and brought in the Bhu Bharati Act, enabling revenue officials to resolve land issues directly in villages."

Tribal villagers happy for sanctioning road

Paderu (ASR district): Tribal residents of Kalyanagummi village in Gumma Panchayat, Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district, expressed heartfelt gratitude to district Collector AS Dinesh Kumar for approving the long-pending road construction between Kalyanagummi and Neredlapudi village in Devarapalli mandal. The approval was granted during a special district-level past committee meeting chaired by the Collector on Friday, bringing cheer to the residents, who had long struggled with poor connectivity. In a touching gesture, villagers stood in a line with folded hands, offering their thanks to the Collector and Tribal Welfare Engineering Officer Venu Gopal Rao for addressing their decades-old plea. Until now, the villagers of Kalyanagummi had to take a lengthy and inconvenient route via Damaku in Devarapalli mandal of Vizianagaram district to reach nearby Gummu village. Recognising their plight, former ITDA PO Abhishek had sanctioned Rs One crore in July 2024 for gravel road construction. However, due to pending forest department clearances, the project had not commenced. Following protests from the villagers over the delay, the Collector convened an urgent meeting with the forest and other concerned departments to resolve the issue. With the necessary permissions now granted, construction is expected to begin soon. CPM district committee member K Govind Rao and tribal rights leader Rajarao also thanked the officials for understanding the difficulties faced by the tribal population and for taking timely action to approve the project.

Village & ward secretariat staffers to be transferred after 5-yr tenure

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh govt has mandated that employees of village and ward secretariats who completed five years of service at the same location by May 31, 2025, must be transferred. Additionally, personnel will not be allowed to work in their native mandals as part of a broader policy to ensure impartial public service delivery and strengthen decentralised governance. District collectors have been authorised to oversee the transfer and rationalisation process, which must be completed by June 30, 2025. The details of all transferred employees must be mapped into the Human Resource Management System (HRMS) portal by July 10, 2025. In instances where the number of functionaries at a secretariat exceeds the sanctioned limit after transfers, the surplus staff will remain in place until further instructions are issued. The govt outlined clear eligibility criteria for transfers, giving priority to functionaries with specific needs or circumstances. This includes visually impaired employees, those with children who have mental disabilities, individuals who completed over two years of service in tribal areas, and employees certified with a disability of 40 percent or more. Also prioritised are staff undergoing treatment for serious medical conditions such as cancer, kidney transplant recipients, those who underwent open-heart or neuro surgeries, and women appointed on compassionate grounds following the death of a spouse. Where both spouses are employed in govt service, efforts will be made to post them at the same or nearby stations. All such postings, including those where employees expressed preferences for specific locations, will be treated as request transfers and will be eligible for travel and transfer-related allowances. Employees serving in Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) areas will not be relieved of their duties until suitable replacements are posted and have reported. Any failure to report to an ITDA posting will invite disciplinary action. Relieving officers must also ensure that pending dues are settled before an employee is formally released from duty. As part of the larger rationalisation exercise, the govt restructured the secretariats into three categories based on population. Category A secretariats will have six functionaries, Category B will have seven, and Category C will have eight. These functionaries will be deployed under two classifications: General Purpose and Specific Purpose, with aspirational roles added based on requirement. After the rationalisation and transfer procedures are finalised, any remaining surplus employees may be reassigned to other govt departments depending on demand and availability.
