Man jailed for crashing into woman as he drove down Blackpool promenade tramway
Walkinshaw can be seen on CCTV hurtling down the Blackpool promenade tramway moments before he crashed into a woman and left her with life changing injuries.
A man who "mowed down" a woman as he drove down a tramway while over the legal limit has been jailed.
Stephen Walkinshaw, 44, was driving his Jaguar F-Pace along the tram tracks on Blackpool Promenade when he hit the woman.
Walkinshaw had been drinking all afternoon in a nearby pub on Friday 29 September 2023, before he decided to hurtle down the tramway at 30mph despite cars not being allowed on the rails.
The victim, a woman in her 40s, was with her partner on holiday when Walkinshaw crashed into her. Despite the victim suffering life changing injuries and Walkinshaw's own car being damaged, he didn't stop and instead continued down the tramway.
In a victim personal statement, the woman said the collision had changed her and her family's life and that she still suffers from both physical and mental pain.
Walkinshaw's car was later spotted by a police patrol, and after a brief pursuit he was stopped and arrested.
Walkinshaw, of Danebridge Place. Congleton, Cheshire, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving in court, and was jailed for three years and received a seven year driving ban which will only begin once he is released from prison.
Sgt Dan Gunn, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: 'My thoughts today are first and foremost with the victim of this horrendous collision. She suffered some significant injuries which require ongoing treatment, and the collision has had a huge impact on her and her family. I hope that this result gives her some closure and enables her to focus on her ongoing recovery.
'Walkinshaw was both over the drink drive limit and driving in an area restricted for trams when he ran down the victim and to compound his offending he failed to stop at the scene.
'I welcome this sentence which is a result of the quality and strength of the prosecution case, and my thanks go to all those involved in the investigation.'

Father and son jailed after inventing story over crash which seriously injured woman
A father and son have both been jailed after inventing a story over a crash which left a woman seriously injured in Buckley-Barber, 19, was driving at high speeds and 'showing off' when he overturned his car into a watery ditch in Pevensey in April 2023. A female passenger in the car suffered serious injuries. Instead of calling the emergency services, the then 17-year-old called his father, Jason Barber. Barber, 46, drove his son home first before taking the woman to hospital. While in the car, the woman could hear the father and son inventing a story, claiming the car had been forced off the road to avoid hitting an animal. After the woman was brought into A&E at Eastbourne District General Hospital, staff reported the crash to police. Officers later went to Barber's address, but he told officers he didn't know where his son was. At the scene of the crash, beer cans were recovered from around the Ford Escort, and Buckley-Barber had been with friends at a party earlier in the night. The teenager was not found that night, and only called police 12 hours later where he repeated the made-up story. Phones were seized from the father and son, and revealed that Barber sent a text message to a friend, claiming he 'hid' his son from police on the night they were looking for him. Mobile phone footage also showed Buckley-Barber's "reckless" driving shortly before the crash. Inspector Vicki Rees, Sussex Police Luic Buckley-Barber, 19, of Maresfield Drive, Pevensey, pleaded guilty to causing serious injuries by dangerous driving and was sentenced to one year and four months in prison, and was disqualified from driving for three years. Jason Barber, 46, of the same address, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice and was sentenced to two years and three months in prison. Speaking after the case, PC Jessica Crump from the Roads Policing Unit said: 'The father and son showed no regard for the victim's welfare that night, and only looked out for their own interests. 'Dangerous driving is one of the fatal five offences that cause deaths and injuries on our roads. 'Luic decided to drive dangerously behind the wheel, with another person's life in his hands. He had not maintained his vehicle in a good state of repair, and was extremely lucky he did not cause a fatality that night."

The company director faces two charges of assault and one of criminal damage. Wife Jennifer Hollisey, 79, also faces two charges of assault relating to the couple next door, as well as causing £3.99 of damage to her neighbour's phone in the incident. Both pleaded not guilty to the charges at Norwich Magistrates' Court last week. The court was told there was a "very messy history" to the row over the driveway, which the couple share with at least three other properties in the village of Bressingham in Norfolk. The court heard prosecutor Katherine Newson say that the alleged victims and the defendants had fallen out in a "dispute over access to their driveway". Declan Gallagher, defending the couple, said it was a "confrontation" as a result of a "long-term dispute" and that "there is a very messy history to this". When magistrates were seeking a date for the trial, Mr Hollisey interjected and told the court they "have several holidays booked this year and next". The case has been set for a two-day trial at Ipswich Magistrates' Court between March 10 and 11 next year. The couple, of High Road, Bressingham, were given conditional bail and told to have no contact with their neighbours.
