The latest iOS update might have reactivated Apple Intelligence features

Yahoo11-02-2025

Some iPhone users have reported that yesterday's update to iOS 18.3.1 reactivated once-disabled Apple Intelligence features on specific devices. Certain features, like Notification Summaries, had been shut off over concerns about accuracy. Now users are reporting that these features have been re-enabled following the update.
Devices that displayed a welcome screen after updating seem to have a higher chance of these features being re-activated. Reddit user u/Hanthunius reported the bug on their iPhone 15 Pro Max, while others saw the features make a comeback on Mac devices. MacRumors tested this theory, and while Apple Intelligence remained disabled on iPadOS and iOS in their tests, the Mac Mini was a different story.
The team saw the Welcome screen appear on the Mac Mini, but on none of the other devices. They also pointed out that unlike typical Welcome screen, this one lacked the option to set it up later and forced users to enable the feature to continue.
Aside from the fact that this is not a user-friendly approach, re-enabling Apple Intelligence poses other problems. It requires roughly 7GB of memory per device, so users with limited storage might disable Apple Intelligence to make room for applications they use more often.
When iOS 18.3 rolled out, it made Apple Intelligence an opt-out feature. That means that it's turned on by default on any compatible device, and if you don't wish to use the feature, you need to turn it off.
If you previously had Apple Intelligence disabled, check to make sure your settings haven't changed. This particular bug seems to be sporadic, but if you've updated to the latest version of iOS — and especially if you received a Welcome screen upon turning your device back on — then it's worth taking a look.

Apple's Original iPod Won't Work With macOS Tahoe 26

PCMag editors select and review products independently. If you buy through affiliate links, we may earn commissions, which help support our testing. Those still rocking an original iPod are set to find it even harder to keep it going as Apple appears to be dropping support for the original devices with the upcoming macOS Tahoe 26. Some early adopters of the new macOS discovered that the first developer preview removes support for FireWire, the tech used to connect the first two generations of iPod to a Mac to sync across audio files. That means the original iPod from 2001, and the iPod 2nd Gen Touch Wheel from 2002, won't connect for syncing on macOS Tahoe 26. The 3rd Gen iPod from 2003 gained USB support for syncing alongside FireWire, so those iPods and later devices should continue to connect. As reported by MacRumors, NekoMichiUBC on X noted that when they tried to connect their iPod to a Mac running the latest software, they were met with a blank screen. This also means older external hard drives that rely on FireWire won't be supported, as one Reddit user found out after connecting a FireWire 800 external drive. Apple has yet to formally confirm the end of FireWire support. That may mean this is a mistake and the company will change course for its final software release in September. But don't hold your breathe, considering the age of the tech. (Apple discontinued the iPod lineup in 2022.) We asked Apple for clarification on FireWire support, and we'll update this story when we hear back. Apple first introduced FireWire support on some 1997 Mac models, before gradually expanding to the full range with it appearing on many products between 1999 and 2011. The technology itself is nearing its 40th birthday next year. It's remarkable the company has continued to support FireWire, and therefore the original iPod, over the last 23 years. If you want to continue syncing your iPod with your Mac, you'll need an older device that isn't upgraded to the latest software so you can continue to connect it.

NEW YORK, June 22, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Leading securities law firm Bleichmar Fonti & Auld LLP announces that a lawsuit has been filed against Reddit, Inc. iOS 26 has a huge battery life upgrade — here's the iPhones that get it

One of our favorite new features added with the iOS 26 developer beta is Apple's new "adaptive power" mode aimed at extending the battery life of the best iPhones. Unfortunately, it looks like you'll need an iPhone 15 Pro model or newer to enjoy the benefits. In the iOS 26 developer beta, Apple describes adaptive power mode as a way for your iPhone to make 'small performance adjustments to extend your battery life,' such as by lowering screen brightness and 'allowing some activities to take a little longer.' When the setting's enabled, your phone will automatically trim its energy use to keep it going longer between charges. Adaptive power mode is different from the iPhone's existing low power mode, which restricts background activities and automatically kicks in when your battery reaches 20 percent. As confirmed in a weekend MacRumors report, the feature is only available on the iPhone 15 Pro phones and iPhone 16 series. While iOS 26 is compatible with phones as old as the iPhone 11, adaptive power mode is powered by artificial intelligence, so it's only enabled on phones capable of running Apple Intelligence. Below you can find a full list of iPhone models capable of running the new adaptive power mode in iOS 26: Adaptive Power is enabled by default in the iOS 26 developer beta, but you can also find it alongside Low Power Mode in the Battery > Power Mode section of the Settings menu. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman first reported that Apple was working on an AI-powered battery optimization feature last month. At the time, Gurman said the feature will use the 'battery data it has collected from users' devices' to figure out which apps to trim power consumption from. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Adaptive power mode could prove especially useful for the iPhone 17 Air, Apple's rumored ultra-thin handset. Leaks suggest it could come with a measly 2,800 mAh — 1,100 mAh less than the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. Between this new setting and rumors that Apple will employ a new silicon carbon battery to boost battery density by as much as 15%, Apple may be able to squeeze out an impressively long battery life in the iPhone 17 Air's slim chassis. On the best Android phones, Google has a similar adaptive power feature that employs AI to predict your app usage and restricts the ones you don't visit as often from running in the background, thus using up precious battery life in the process. Over time, Adaptive Battery learns which apps are the worst drains on your phone's battery and limits some of their functions. That way, your phone's battery doesn't drain as much when it's left idle. iOS 26 remains in beta for now as Apple plans to roll out the full update sometime in the fall. It's rumored to add exciting new updates to the Camera and Photos apps as well as Apple Intelligence-powered live translation for text messages and calls.
