MLB insider sheds light on likelihood of Milwaukee Brewers trading Freddy Peralta

Yahoo10 hours ago

The Milwaukee Brewers have earned a reputation for trading high-end pitchers when they are nearing the end of their contracts. With the MLB trade deadline just a month away, All-Star pitcher Freddy Peralta has popped up in trade rumors.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post writes that despite immense interest from around the league, it's a 'long shot' that the Brewers trade Peralta. That's because Peralta's contract is extremely valuable.

Freddy Peralta contract (Spotrac): $8 million salary in 2025, $8 million club option for 2026 season
While he is only under contract through 2026, his salary is a bargain for his production. While he last earned an All-Star selection in 2021, Perala entered MLB games today ranked 15th in ERA. He is also in the top 25 for strikeouts and WHIP this season.
For context regarding Peralta's $8 million salary, there are 67 starting pitchers with a higher base salary than his in 2025. Next season, Peralta will rank 57th in starting pitcher salaries and that's before extensions and new deals signed this upcoming offseason.

Freddy Peralta stats (ESPN): 2.76 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 90-34 K-BB in 88 innings

The contract and production are too valuable for the Brewers to move, especially with the club battling for a wild card spot this season. While it's at least possible Milwaukee could revisit a trade this winter, there are no indications right now that Peralta is available.

Mets send slumping catcher Francisco Alvarez to minors

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Scuffling catcher Francisco Alvarez was demoted to the minors by the New York Mets on Sunday. The team optioned Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse and recalled Hayden Senger from its top farm club before Sunday night's series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies. Senger will back up Luis Torrens, who replaces Alvarez as New York's primary catcher. The move comes after Alvarez went 2 for 5 with a 452-foot home run late in Saturday night's 11-4 victory over Philadelphia, which snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Mets. But he is batting only .236 with three homers, three doubles, 11 RBIs and a .652 OPS in 35 games this year. Alvarez was activated April 25 after beginning the season on the injured list with a hamate fracture in his left hand, and he missed two games this month while on the paternity list. The 23-year-old Alvarez, once rated baseball's best minor league prospect, had 25 homers and 63 RBIs with a .721 OPS as a rookie in 2023. Senger, 28, made his major league debut for the Mets this season and was batting .179 (5 for 28) in 13 big league games. New York began the day tied with Philadelphia atop the NL East. ___ AP MLB:

Trump's ‘Big, Beautiful' Bill Gets Slimmed Down in Senate

WASHINGTON—President Trump's 'big, beautiful' bill is getting smaller just as Republicans head into a crucial week, after the Senate's rules arbiter decided several controversial provisions don't qualify for the special procedure the GOP is using to bypass Democratic opposition. The tax-and-spending megabill centers on extending Trump's 2017 tax cuts, delivering on the spirit of his campaign promises to eliminate taxes on tips and overtime, and providing big lump sums of money for border security and defense. Those new costs are partially offset by spending cuts, in particular to Medicaid.
