PR-savvy and now finally a knight - Beckham always knew how to turn on the charm
A sporting icon courted by prime ministers past and present, newly knighted Sir David Beckham is renowned for being extremely media savvy.
Never more so than when I interviewed him for Sky News at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, after he took part in the closing ceremony having played a key role in London's winning bid to host the 2012 Games.
Speaking about Sir Alex Ferguson in the interview, canny Sir Becks heaped praise on his old boss in our interview. But he'd been less complimentary about his old boss in a conversation with prime minister , I later learned.
I'd travelled to Beijing with Mr Brown, via Afghanistan, and we spent the final evening of the Games at the handover party, when - then London mayor - famously spoke in his speech about "wiff waff" (table tennis) coming home.
During his Beijing visit, Mr Brown had been promoting the idea of a Great Britain football team competing at the 2012 Games and there was speculation about being the team's coach.
"Aah, Sir Alex," Becks said wistfully and apparently affectionately when I asked him about being re-united with his former Manchester United manager during the interview. "Like a father to me."
Later, on the flight home to the UK, when I told Gordon Brown about the interview, the prime minister laughed. "That's funny," he said.
"Why?" I asked him.
He replied: "He told me 'If Sir Alex is manager, he won't pick me!'"
played for Fergie at Manchester United from 1995 until 2003, when he joined Real Madrid amid claims that Ferguson disapproved of the player's showbiz lifestyle.
By 2008 he was playing for LA Galaxy in the US.
But despite his canny, PR-savvy answers in my interview, I saw him work the room that night in Beijing and glad-hand relentlessly.
He gave every interview asked of him and turned on the charm on behalf of UK PLC to everyone present.
For politicians and prime ministers, sportsmen and women like Beckham are pure gold. was also a fan and was photographed sitting alongside Becks at the London Games.
When "Goldenballs", as wife Victoria called him, retired from football a year later, a No 10 spokesman gushed: "The prime minister's view is that David Beckham has been an outstanding footballer throughout his career.
"But not only that, he has been a brilliant ambassador for this country, not least if we remember all the work he did on helping us win London 2012."
Read more from Sky News:
There was indeed a Great Britain men's football team at the Olympics, but it was coached by former England legend Stuart Pearce, not Sir Alex.
And Pearce, nicknamed "psycho" for his aggressive style on the pitch, didn't pick Becks either, though he claimed he'd faced pressure from Downing Street to include him.
Then in 2017, David Cameron's former spin doctor Craig Oliver claimed a senior Tory cabinet minister - thought to have been - suggested giving Becks a peerage and appointing him sports minister in a 2013 cabinet reshuffle.
That never happened either, obviously, though at least - just like his "father figure" Sir Alex.

Plymouth Argyle takeover report bid involves significant revelation
The headline-grabbing involvement of former Real Madrid star Gareth Bale as part of a takeover bid for Plymouth Argyle was always going to ensure the story attracted maximum attention far and wide. A quiet Monday afternoon in the middle of June, certainly when it came to all things Argyle, suddenly exploded into a social media frenzy after The Telegraph's Tom Morgan and John Percy first reported the details. Advertisement They stated Bale had been 'lined up to front a US-based private equity group's potential takeover', and that talks were taking place behind the scenes 'over a bid for full control at Home Park'. READ MORE: Plymouth Argyle captain Joe Edwards takes big step in coaching ambitions READ MORE: Ryan Hardie says Plymouth Argyle farewell after Wrexham transfer Subsequent reporting by other national media outlets suggested those discussions were at an early stage, while Argyle declined to comment on the story when contacted by Plymouth Live. Given even the possibility of 35-year-old Bale, one of the world's best players of his generation, becoming a co-owner of the Pilgrims it was no surprise that it prompted intense debate and speculation among the Green Army on social media. Advertisement Bale would certainly bring 'star' appeal if the takeover bid ever came to fruition, in the same way as it did for Swansea City in April when their new ownership group included Luka Modric, another Real Madrid icon. However, if you take Bale out of the equation for a moment, the wider point is the news could be of huge significance to the future of Argyle for years to come. What The Telegraph report made clear is that this takeover bid was for 'full control' not a minority ownership. Argyle chairman Simon Hallett has made it clear over recent years he was seeking extra investment into the club from other sources to help push the Pilgrims forward. Back in 2022, a US group of investors under the title Argyle Green bought a 20 per cent stake of the club for £4 million, but by the following July some of the leading figures, including director Michael Mincberg, had their shares bought back by Hallett. Advertisement Last December, at a Plymouth Argyle Cornish Supporters' Association event, Hallett revealed talks with a prospective new investor had been taking place since the end of the 2023/234 season and added he was 'on the verge of being able to come public with something'. That did not happen, though, and Hallett confirmed in a recent Chairman's Chat column on the official club website that it had fallen through. "Unfortunately, negotiations have taken too long and the key information that both we and the EFL required to complete the deal has not been forthcoming. I no longer believe that news of the new investor is imminent," he said. Now, less than three weeks later, takeover talk is on the agenda and it will be fascinating to see where it leads, if anywhere. It has certainly excited a lot of the fanbase based on their social media reactions. Hallett has been looking to find new investors while also wanting to retain a majority control of Argyle with the aim of making sure he is confident whoever comes after him will be fit and responsible custodians of the club. Advertisement It also perhaps explains why it has not been easy to reach a deal which would involve a substantial amount of money being put into Argyle by investors who would ultimately not have the final say on club issues. This latest 'Bale-fronted' bid is different in that respect. It is out in the public that it is for 'full control' which could if it was eventually agreed to end the Argyle stewardship of Hallett, which first began in 2018 when he became the majority shareholder and chairman. Argyle have seen from their recent experience of struggle in the Championship over the last two seasons, which culminated in their relegation last term, that it will take considerable additional investment for them to try to be properly competitive at that level in the future. However, there are plenty of clubs who have been bought by new owners full of promises which have not been delivered and then been left in dire straits. Many Argyle supporters will still remember the club's time in administration in 2011 when it almost went out of existence, and also the long-lasting damage it caused. Advertisement So while excitement and intrigue about the latest takeover talk among the Green Army is entirely understandable, it is crucial that the best interests of Argyle are served by any deal which is struck, whether it involves star names or not. Real Madrid heavyweight could make long-awaited comeback vs RB Salzburg
Real Madrid did not get off to the best of starts to the FIFA Club World Cup as they fell to a 1-1 draw to Al-Hilal in their first game of the event. Their second game of the event will be this weekend against Pachuca in a game where Los Blancos will fancy their chances as serious favourites. Advertisement Given their situation on the table, they must win to have any hope of qualifying as the highest-placed team. Kylian Mbappe remains a doubt for the game after he was even hospitalised for gastroenteritis earlier this week. AS, however, relays information that will come as a massive boost to Xabi Alonso. The return of the captain As relayed by the Spanish outlet, Dani Carvajal is in a very advanced stage of his recovery and is expected to play a part for Real Madrid in the ongoing tournament. In fact, he could be ready as early as the third group stage game against RB Salzburg. Likely to return next week. (Photo by) Advertisement The veteran defender was initially injured in Real Madrid's win over Villarreal in October last year and was initially expected to return only next season. His recovery, however, has progressed better than expected. Carvajal is back and raring after recovering from his knee injury, although he did not train with the team today due to some discomfort in his neck. As such, Xabi Alonso and Co. will look to exercise caution over his incorporation. After all, a relapse is the last thing the management will want. It remains to be seen to what extent the new manager relies on Carvajal in the coming season, especially with Trent Alexander-Arnold now in the mix as a new option in the department. Advertisement For Carvajal, it will be a queer situation for it is the first-time he has a legitimate competitor for the right-back position. Needless to say, he will be desperate to prove that he is far from done and being replaced at the club.

Man Utd interested in Liverpool midfielder Nagano
Fuka Nagano was part of Japan's squad at the 2023 Women's World Cup [Getty Images] Manchester United are interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Fuka Nagano on a free transfer this summer. The 26-year-old's contract runs out at Liverpool at the end of June and she is yet to agree an extension despite having offers on the table for several months. Advertisement Sources at Liverpool suggested in May they were hopeful Nagano would renew her contract but United's interest could complicate matters. Nagano joined Liverpool in January 2023 and quickly established herself as a regular starter in the team. The midfielder could link-up with fellow Japanese international Hinata Miyazawa if United are successful in their pursuit.
