Storms set to return and cooler weather around New Mexico

Yahoo09-06-2025

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Muggy conditions are still present in wake of yesterday's strong thunderstorms in East New Mexico with rain-free conditions now across Northeast New Mexico with somewhat-gusty easterly gap winds. Near-freezing temperatures are confined to the higher peaks of the Northern Mountains, while elsewhere is mostly starting off in the upper 40s, 50s, and 60s.

Somewhat-persistent upper-level westerly winds with more moisture, along with a slight drop in the jet stream to the south with a low pressure system building near the Four Corners, will combine with the daytime heating, as well as with the low-level moisture, to produce more storms in the mountains to East New Mexico today, as well as parts of the Rio Grande Valley. Elsewhere, some clouds will pass on through with temperatures warming up well into the 80s and 90s for most central to southern areas, while the lingering muggy conditions will lead to northern areas reaching the upper 60s to the lower 80s.
Drier air aloft is ahead after another stormy day for many tomorrow, but the pendulum swing pattern of muggy mornings with breezy easterly winds shifting to southwesterly drier winds in the afternoons forming storms to the east will develop ahead as the latest storm system eventually moves away. Temperatures will eventually rise ahead with much clearer skies through this weekend.

Why does humidity make hot days feel worse?

(WHTM) — Everybody knows, it's the humidity that gets you. But why is that? Humidity, which is a measure of the air's water vapor content, is no stranger in the Midstate. It feels sticky, heavy and — on the hottest days — suffocating. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now This is because high humidity blocks an important function for the human body: sweating. The body's natural way of cooling itself off is, of course, sweating. When sweat evaporates, it reduces the body's temperature. But the National Weather Service says this cannot happen when humidity is high. When the atmospheric moisture content increases, the service said, the rate of evaporation off the body decreases. 'In other words, the human body feels warmer in humid conditions,' the service said. Forecasters measure this effect with the heat index. It's a blend of the air temperature and relative humidity percentage, and it shows what the temperature outside actually feels like to the human body. So, it's not just the humidity that gets you. abc27 Weather: Harrisburg Weather, Current Conditions & Forecasts Extreme heat is when heat and humidity with temperatures higher than 90 degrees Fahrenheit lasts for at least two to three days, according to Ready PA. Extreme heat is responsible for the most weather-related deaths each year, the agency said. So, it recommends taking some precautions: Drink water to stay hydrated Take cool showers or baths Dress in loose-fitting fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothing Stay indoors and limit exposure to the sun Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Monsoon to bring heavy rain, flooding to parts of New Mexico this week

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Monsoon moisture will increase across New Mexico early this week. Heavy rain will bring a flash flooding threat on and off burn scars, especially on Tuesday. Scattered storms have developed Sunday across eastern New Mexico, bringing severe weather and heavy, flooding rainfall to a few areas. It's another hot day too, where it's been drier. Unfortunately, there is still a large fire danger across the state due to the warm temperatures, breezy winds, and low humidity. Monsoon moisture will increase Monday across the state, bringing more storms to areas along and east of the Rio Grande Valley. Again, these storms will be capable of heavy rainfall and flash flooding. ABQ Taco Fest and more Forecast: Wildfire danger returns to parts of New Mexico Friday and Saturday The heaviest rain will likely fall on Tuesday as near-record levels of monsoon moisture stream into the state. Areas from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains south to southern New Mexico have the best chance at seeing flooding rainfall, both on and off burn scar areas. There is a significant threat of flash flooding around the burn scars in Ruidoso Tuesday. If you live in or around flood-prone areas and burn scars, take precautions now and know where to go in case of flash flooding. Also, make sure you have a way to receive weather warnings and information. Rain and thunderstorm chances will continue for the rest of the week, with chances becoming more isolated by Friday. Regardless, any storm could drop heavy rainfall, causing flash flooding, especially on top of what could already be saturated ground. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
