Former Alabama coach Mitch Gaspard gets new role in college athletics
Gaspard won 236 games in seven seasons as Alabama's head coach and led the Crimson Tide to a Super Regional in 2010.

A former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach is returning to college sports.
Mitch Gaspard, who won 236 games as Alabama's baseball coach from 2010-2016, is joining Southeastern University in Hammond, Louisiana. Gaspard will work as a special assistant to the athletic director for special initiatives. Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball reported the news on Thursday.
Gaspard will work and report directly to Southeastern Director of Athletics Jay Artigues, himself a former head baseball coach at the school.
In seven seasons with the Crimson Tide, Gaspard led Alabama baseball to four NCAA Tournament appearances. He guided the Crimson Tide to wins over top-eight national seed Georgia Tech in back-to-back days at the NCAA tournament's Atlanta Regional in 2010.
Alabama forced a winner-take-all Game 3 at the Clemson Super Regional that year but fell to the Tigers, 8-6, in what turned out to be the Tide's last Super Regional appearance until 2023.
Gaspard joined Louisiana Tech in 2019. He assumed the role of hitting coach and recruiting coordinator that year and was named Associate Head Coach in 2021. Louisiana Tech made the NCAA Tournament three times between 2021-24 and hosted a regional in 2021. Alabama was one of three at-large teams to play in that year's Ruston Regional.
Gaspard's record as Alabama head coach was 236-191.

Alabama has four players in CBS Sports' top 50 NFL Draft prospects to watch in 2025
Kadyn Proctor is Alabama's highest-ranked player in CBS Sports' list of 2026 NFL Draft players to watch this season. Alabama football has some NFL draft analysts buzzing ahead of the 2025 season. Small wonder. The Crimson Tide have gone 17 years since a player wasn't selected in the first round of the draft. That was all the way back in 2008 after Nick Saban's first season when the talent simply hadn't arrived in Tuscaloosa but was more than on its way with Saban's banner '08 class. Exactly who the first Alabama player chosen at next year's draft, to be held in Pittsburgh, will be is probably a matter of debate and hinges on who steps up the most in 2025. Two players to keep an eye on are offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor and defensive lineman LT Overton. Proctor and Overton are two of four Alabama players that made CBS Sports' top 50 draft prospects to watch ahead of the 2025 college football season. Proctor has been a two-year starter at left tackle and enters the season as a rising junior among the draft boards. He was ranked the No. 3 overall player in CBS Sports' list on Friday, behind Texas quarterback Arch Manning at No. 1 and former Crimson Tide safety Caleb Downs of Ohio State. Overton will return for his senior season and second with the Crimson Tide after transferring to Alabama from Texas A&M after the 2023 season. In 12 games last season, the 6-foot-5, 283-pound tackle made a career-high 42 tackles (17 solo) and recorded two sacks and a forced fumble. Overton, named to the 2025 Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List, was ranked the No. 13 overall play to watch by CBS Sports. Further down the list, fifth-year senior linebacker and fellow Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List member Deontae Lawson was ranked at No. 35 overall, with offensive lineman Parker Brailsford No. 49. Alabama will open the 2025 season against the Florida State Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ABC. WATCH: Ohio State incoming transfer Christoph Tilly is already balling in Columbus
The Ohio State basketball program went through an extreme makeover after the disappointing season last year. The Buckeyes kept the likes of Bruce Thornton, Devin Royal, and John Mobley Jr., but they lost others who were thought to be key pieces of the future when OSU got them prior. So, head coach Jake Diebler and the staff had to retool a bit and try to bring in the talent and pieces they thought could build momentum to get back to the NCAA Tournament this year and lay a foundation for getting the team back among one of the best in the Big Ten and country. One of those keys was to bring in a big man, but not just any big man. Today's game almost necessitates a guy who can go both inside and out for spacing on the floor and forced matchups from the other sideline. To do that, Ohio State went out and convinced former Santa Clara big man, Christop Tilly to come to Columbus out of the transfer portal. We've already heard from Dielber on what he brings to the table, but now we have some highlights of him balling out in some of the controlled scrimmages the OSU basketball team has been going through. By the looks of the video shared on the Ohio State Hoops "X" account, it sure feels like Tilly should provide Ohio State with some scoring, athleticism, and needed stretching of opposing Big Ten defenses next year. Take a look for yourself below. There's a lot of optimism in Columbus because of Tilly and the other pieces that have been brought in, but it all means absolutely nothing until the team shows what it can do on the floor when things tip off this winter. Let's hope what we're hearing from the coaches and players unfolds the way they -- and fans -- would like. 5-star safety includes Alabama in finalists, announces commitment date
One of the nation's top safeties made noise on the recruiting trail this past Wednesday afternoon, as Jireh Edwards officially set a commitment date, while also narrowing down his list of finalists to six. Included in those six programs were the Alabama Crimson Tide, who were also joined by Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, and Texas A&M. Edwards' commitment decision between the six programs will come July 5. Advertisement At the moment, Edwards is currently considered as the nation's No. 24 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings, as well as the No. 3 safety in the 2026 class. Edwards, a five-star prospect, is also considered as the No. 3 player in the state of Maryland where he attends nationally-known program, St. Frances Academy. Alabama's 2026 class is already shaping up to be a special one in terms of defensive backs, as the Crimson Tide have a pair of Top 50 players nationally already committed at cornerback in Jorden Edmonds and Zyan Gibson, the former of which is a five-star.
