Father's day 2025: Father's Day, celebrated every year on the third Sunday of June, is a heartfelt tribute to the love, support, and guidance of fathers and father figures. Beyond the celebrations, it can serve as a timely reminder for men to prioritise their health. As they age, health concerns like prostate and bladder cancer become increasingly common, but with the right lifestyle choices, the risk of these diseases can be significantly reduced. Father's Day is the perfect opportunity to not only honour fathers but also raise awareness about the importance of regular health checkups, preventive care, and healthy habits for long-term well-being. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Shalabh Agrawal, consultant, urology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurgaon said, 'Prostate and bladder cancers are among the most common urological malignancies affecting men. While genetics and age play a role, several modifiable lifestyle factors can significantly reduce the risk.'
Increase intake of fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, especially tomatoes (lycopene), cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower), and leafy greens. Limit red and processed meats – high consumption is linked to increased prostate and bladder cancer risk. Choose whole grains over refined carbs and include foods with omega-3 fatty acids (like walnuts, flaxseeds, and fatty fish).
Drink plenty of water daily to flush out toxins from the bladder and reduce the concentration of harmful substances in urine. Avoid sugary sodas and limit caffeine and alcohol which can irritate the bladder lining.
Smoking is the leading preventable risk factor for bladder cancer. Chemicals from tobacco accumulate in the urine and harm the bladder lining. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week to maintain a healthy weight and improve hormone regulation. Physical activity may reduce inflammation and boost immunity, key factors in cancer prevention.
If working in industries involving dyes, rubber, or leather, follow safety protocols and use protective gear to limit chemical exposure.
Screenings like PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) tests and urine cytology can help in early detection. Men over 50, or earlier if there's a family history, should consult their doctor for routine screening schedules. Often, yoga is squeezed into the small windows before or after the workday, but with work taking up the lion's share of our time and energy, those moments are easy to miss. HT Lifestyle reached out to experts to understand how yoga can support mental wellbeing at work and ways organisations can thoughtfully include the practice in their work culture. It acts like a practical tool, going beyond just a wellness trend. With the high pressure at work, managing all the work responsibilities, yoga may be an effective way to handle stress. Dr Ajit Dandekar, Head of Psychiatry and Mental Health, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai, shared three key mental health benefits of introducing yoga at the workplace. He outlined three key benefits of introducing yoga in the workplace. Dr Dandekar added, 'The first impact of introducing yoga at the workplace is stress management. Research on Indian and global employees shows workplace yoga can reduce perceived-stress scores by almost two-thirds. Stress, being one of the common mental health issues among the working population, impact on this scale that is substantial. Yoga also uplifts mood significantly. And lastly, it deepens restorative sleep and overall quality of life, so we return to our desks fresher and more focused the next morning.' Strategies to bring yoga into the workplace. The right strategies make yoga a part of work culture.(Shutterstock) While yoga is making the rounds, with everyone offering their two cents on incorporating it into daily life, the practical application often remains out of reach. But a grounded, actionable approach helps move yoga beyond just a trend, making it more than an annual duty on Yoga Day. Shruti Swaroop, Founder of Embrace Consulting and Co-Founder of the International Inclusion Alliance, shared with HT Lifestyle that adding yoga at work doesn't require grand setups or lengthy sessions. With the right intention, even small sessions may boost focus and foster a healthy work culture. She said, 'As a founder committed to building mindful, resilient teams, I've witnessed firsthand how even small, consistent integration of yoga into daily work life can create a lasting impact. And no, it doesn't require elaborate studios or hour-long routines. It requires intention, policy support, and human-centred design. Workplace yoga has been found through studies to improve focus, reduce stress, and create improved posture, lower absenteeism, and higher employee morale. Yoga in the workplace needs to shift from being a one-time thing per year to a facet of the company ecosystem. Not everyone needs to do yoga, it just means that everyone needs to be given the option to, without guilt or exclusion." Shruti shared 5 actionable strategies on how to include yoga into everyday work culture: 1. Micro-yoga breaks during work Adopt brief, guided yoga breaks, 10 minutes, twice daily, for stretches and breathing exercises that can be performed at the desk. These do not involve changing clothes or special equipment, making them accessible and inclusive. HR's role: Arrange virtual or in-office facilitators; invite team leads to participate. Employee tip: Create micro-practices - a few breaths before meetings, or loosening up during lunch. 5. Leadership role modelling and normalisation Leadership role modelling and normalisation occur when leaders get involved. When founders and managers attend yoga class or discuss openly its positive impacts, it facilitates natural adoption throughout the organisation. For those spending extended periods at a desk, incorporating simple stretches and mindful movement into the day can counter the effects of a sedentary lifestyle and help maintain overall health. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar, yoga expert, columnist, founder of Akshar Yoga Kendraa said, 'From stiff shoulders to back pain and tired eyes, the physical toll that office work can take won't surprise you. But you can take care of your body and mind without getting out of your desk chair. Desk yoga is a simple and effective means of incorporating movement, focus and calm in your day.' Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar suggested these simple stretches for professionals: 1. Neck rolls: Start with neck rolls, from a seated position: sitting tall, slowly rotate your head in a clockwise circle and then repeat in the opposite direction. Shoulder shrugs: Then do shoulder shrugs—raise your shoulders toward your ears, then relax. Do this a few times to relieve the tightness. Extend both hands overhead and lace your fingers, reaching up as you take a deep breath in. Hold the stretch and then exhale, releasing. 3. Seated spinal twist: If your back is aching, a seated spinal twist. Maintain and sit tall as you bring your right hand to your left knee, twisting your torso left. Continue for a few seconds, breathe and repeat on the other side. You may even want to extend your legs beneath your desk and flex your ankles to promote circulation. Benefits of desk yoga: Speaking of the benefits of desk yoga, the yoga expert added, 'Desk yoga is about more than just moving. It's a brief pause that empties your mind, slows your breath and lifts your spirits. You'll feel better in 5-10 minutes, refreshed and ready to refocus better. Yoga Day 2025: 21 June is the International Yoga Day, a celebration of one of the world's holistic health practices, yoga. It is observed annually on the same date. As per the UN, the theme for this year is 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'. This is also a fitting moment to explore how yoga can support and improve women's health. One of the common gynaecological issues affecting women of reproductive age is endometriosis. It is characterised by intense menstrual pain, deeply affecting quality of life. There are medical treatments for the same, but yoga can provide gentle relief with the help of calming movements or breathwork. Yoga gently helps ease the pain of endometriosis.(Shutterstock) Dr Sonu Taxak, director and senior IVF consultant at Yellow Fertility, shared with HT Lifestyle how endometriosis is widely common among women of reproductive age. He explained the condition endometriosis and said, 'Endometriosis is when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside the uterus. This tissue usually grows on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other organs within the pelvis. It can cause severe cramps, chronic pelvic pain, fatigue, and sometimes infertility. Approximately 10% of women of reproductive age have endometriosis, and it can affect a woman's physical and emotional health in many unhealthy ways. But according to studies, practising yoga regularly provides relief from lower back pain, menopausal symptoms, stress, and depression. Further, improving the symptoms of endometriosis.' Does yoga reduce endometriosis pain? There isn't much awareness about the emotional toll of endometriosis pain.(Shutterstock) Dr Sonu Taxak however cautioned that yoga is not a replacement treatment. It is only a tool for supporting the symptims betteer. But yoga does bring in some biological changes with the help of movements and breathwork, that may ease the pain. He opined, 'While yoga is not a treatment for endometriosis, for many women it is a valuable tool in managing the effects of the disease. Yoga should always be a complementary approach to medical interventions, not a replacement. But consistent participation has been shown to reduce inflammation, encourage blood flow to the pelvic area, and decrease the production of cortisol, the stress hormone that can exacerbate pain. Since yoga encourages the parasympathetic nervous system, it acts to help the body settle into deep relaxation and or the body to release endorphins, natural pain-relieving hormones.' He explained, 'Restorative yoga poses offer significant comfort for pelvic pain. By moving gently, you can release tension in the pelvic muscles, improve blood flow, and promote the health of your reproductive and digestive systems. However, during an acute flare or your menstrual cycle with significant pain, it is best to take a pass on any intense stretching or heavy movement.
