, has now offered a more thoughtful appraisal of the explosive batter's style after the opening day of India's domination in the first Test against England.
During a segment on Sony Sports, Gavaskar heaped praise on Pant. Previously branding Pant's shot in Australia as 'Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!' on ABP Sport, Gavaskar has revisited his perspective.

In his fresh remarks, Gavaskar said, 'It seems like that's how he plays. When he comes in to bat, on the second or third ball, he often uses his feet and hits a boundary. It makes him feel free and then allows him to play the way he wants.
"Over here, he's been measured in his approach, giving himself time out in the middle. But once he's in and the bowlers start to tire, that's when he begins to step down the pitch and really attack, hitting big shots, sixes, and boundaries.'

Pant, after a long chat with the non-striker Ravindra Jadeja, decided to review it. The third umpire did not change the decision. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who was commentating for Sky Sports, criticised head coach Gautam Gambhir for possibly sending Pant the wrong message during his innings. He suggested that Pant may have been instructed to alter his gameplay following the dismissals of Shubman Gill and Karun Nair. 'Also very interesting, when a message was sent out to Rishabh Pant, it curbed his style of play. He was just very carefree with his stroke making, and yet the feeling that a message was sent to tell him to calm down doesn't work for certain players, I guess," Dinesh Karthik said on commentary, as per reports. 'As a coach, it's completely understandable when you want to get a message across to the batter. But over time, you realise, for certain players, how you send that message becomes very important, what is the tone, what is the language used that gets the best out of the batter," he added. Dinesh Karthik also mentioned that Gambhir possibly needed to adopt a different approach to get the best out of Pant. 'Maybe with Rishabh Pant, it needs to be a different way in which you get things done," Karthik said. India lost the advantage in the first session on Day 2, losing four wickets in the last half hour.
