Jasprit Bumrah, the absolute champion: Legends in awe of pacer after Leeds heroics
India and England legends heaped praise on Jasprit Burmah after his stunning performance in the Leeds Test as he claimed another five-wicket haul. Bumrah ended with figures of five for 83 as he helped the visitors claim an important six-run lead. England looked to be closing in on overhauling the score posted by India after a fast start to the second session and a frustrating stand between Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse. However, Bumrah came in to clean up the tail and ensure India went into tea with the lead. advertisementThis was Bumrah's 14th career five-wicket haul, his 12th one outside India and emulated Kapil Dev. Speaking to the broadcasters, Sunil Gavaskar showered praise on Bumrah, saying that whenever the pacer has the ball in hand, it seems likes the batter is going to have a bit of a problem. ENG vs IND, 1st Test Day 3 updates"He's been sensational. If not for those drop catches, he might have had even seven or eight wickets to show against his efforts. He's been the difference when he's had the ball in his hand. Just about every delivery, it looks as if the batter is going to have a bit of a problem," said Gavaskar. Gavaskar said that he rates Bumrah amongst the very best bowlers in history and the greatest one in the current era. The Indian legend said that Bumrah has the knack to be lethal with the new ball as well as the old one. advertisement"I think he ranks amongst the very best. It's difficult to compare different eras, different pitches, different opposition. But you know in the modern era, without a question he's the greatest, he's the best, no question. Because it's not just the new ball, it's with the old ball also, he picks wickets, you see, that's the beauty of his bowling. A lot of bowlers are lethal when they have the new ball in their hands. That's not the case with Bumrah. Bumrah can come with the old ball, and with the old ball also he can also get the ball to move around both ways. He's got that slower yorker. He's got that bouncer," said Gavaskar. Former England captain Michael Vaughan said that the hosts were trying to survive the spell from Bumrah. Vaughan claimed that Bumrah bowls deliveries that a batter can't really be prepare for. "Every time Jasprit Bumrah had the ball in his hand, you just knew as an England side, they were just trying to survive. Yes, Harry Brooks was stepping down to hit him, but I think they were always trying to see him off, but he's just too good. He bowls balls that you can't really prepare for," said Vaughan. advertisementBumrah's workload management has been a big question, with India coach Gautam Gambhir hinting that the pacer may play only three Tests in the tour. Vaughan said that India should capitalise on the gametime Bumrah will get and secure wins in the matches the pacer will play. "Bumrah, I mean, if you play him 3 of the 5 games, I would say they're probably gonna have to win those 3 games. To win the series, you think when Bumrah is in the side, India have to capitalise," said Vaughan. 'Utterly outstanding'Mark Butcher, while speaking to Sky Sports, said that Bumrah was outstanding and is an absolute champion of the game. "Bumrah has been utterly outstanding. Irresistible fast bowling. He is an absolute champion," said Butcher. Stuart Broad praised Bumrah for his bowling and wondered if India missed a trick by holding him back. 'Bumrah has moved the ball more than anyone else, brought drama, bowled jaffas and deserves the fine applause he received from this crowd. But you do wonder whether he should have been brought into the attack earlier on," said Broad. Bumrah also went past Wasim Akram for the most wickets by an Asian bowler (150 wickets) in SENA countries. Must Watch

IND vs ENG: 'Call it the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy': Sunil Gavaskar questions naming order of Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy
Image credit: England Cricket NEW DELHI: Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has expressed strong reservations over the naming of the ongoing five-match Test series between India and England as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Gavaskar argued that Sachin Tendulkar 's name should appear before James Anderson's, citing Tendulkar's seniority and vastly superior achievements in international cricket. Writing in his column for Mid-Day, Gavaskar dismissed the reasoning that names were ordered alphabetically and took particular aim at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for their decision. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'The ECB is fully entitled to call the series by any name they choose but for most, if not all, Indian cricket lovers it is jarring to know that Anderson's name comes first. Not only is Sachin Tendulkar along with Kapil Dev the greatest Indian cricketer, but also senior to Anderson by more than a dozen years. He is numero uno as far as runs and centuries are concerned in Test cricket but also at the one-day level too he has more runs than anybody else,' Gavaskar wrote. The former India captain continued by underlining the disparity in accomplishments between the two cricketing icons. 'Anderson is third in the list of wicket takers in Test cricket and his record is nowhere as good as Tendulkar in one-day cricket. Tendulkar is also part of a World Cup winning team which Anderson has not been. Jimmy Anderson was a terrific bowler but mainly in English conditions and his record away is nowhere near as good as Tendulkar's is,' he added. Gavaskar also called upon Indian fans and the media to refer to the series as the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, flipping the current order to reflect what he believes is the more appropriate recognition. Sitanshu Kotak press conference: Big revelation on Shubman Gill In the same column, Gavaskar offered suggestions regarding the Pataudi Medal of Excellence, which is currently awarded to the captain of the series-winning team. He questioned the logic behind that structure. 'Why the captain and what if the series is drawn? That's why it would have been better to have had a Pataudi medal for the man of the match for every Test, culminating in the Pataudi Trophy for the player of the series. This way, the Pataudis will be remembered after every Test match played as well as after the series is finished in England,' Gavaskar remarked. "He Never Took...": Sunil Gavaskar Reveals Rishabh Pant's Reaction After 'Stupid, Stupid' Rant In Australia
From 'stupid, stupid, stupid' to 'superb, superb, superb' - Rishabh Pant, with his electrifying show for India vs England in the 1st innings of the first Test at Headingley, forced Sunil Gavaskar to utter the latter. During the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy, after Pant had fallen to a rash shot at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Gavaskar could not control his anger and had uttered: 'stupid, stupid, stupid.' That reaction was widely coevered. But on Saturday, after Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper-batter to slam seven Test tons, Gavaskar was impressed and evenr said: "Superb, superb, superb." He also went on to talk about Pant's reaction after he had made the 'stupid' rant. "He never took offence. I know him from a very young age. He is always eager to learn," Gavaskar said on air. Another word from Sunny G...! #SonySportsNetwork #GroundTumharaJeetHamari #ENGvIND #NayaIndia #DhaakadIndia #TeamIndia — Sony Sports Network (@SonySportsNetwk) June 21, 2025 Also, former India head coach Ravi Shastri shared his thoughts on Rishabh Pant's entertaining knock of 134 on the second morning of the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley, adding that the 'outrageous' wicketkeeper-batter is someone who knows how he wants to play. Resuming from 65 not out, Pant went on to hit his seventh Test century and go past former India captain M.S. Dhoni (six) for the most Test centuries hit by an Indian wicketkeeper. The flamboyant Pant's third Test hundred in England, laced with magnificence and madness in stroke-play in equal measure, is a feat no other visiting keeper has achieved before. "What do you say about Pant?! I used the word outrageous yesterday, and nothing has changed. He plays the numbers game beautifully and plays the way he wants. He will block for a bit and then decides he has to go after the bowler and shift gears." "He has his own computer and only he knows how it works. That's his USP. That's what puts bowlers under pressure and makes him box office, a real entertainer and a match winner," said Shastri on Sky Sports' broadcast during lunch break. Pant got to the three-figure mark off 146 balls by dancing down the pitch and heaving Shoaib Bashir for a one-handed six over midwicket. Amidst applause from the crowd, Pant celebrated reaching the century with his signature somersault, a skill he picked up from undergoing gymnastics practice in his growing-up years.

‘Superb, superb, superb': Sunil Gavaskar lauds Rishabh Pant's century vs England, months after ‘stupid, stupid, stupid' tirade against him in Australia
A few months after Sunil Gavaskar slammed Rishabh Pant on air during the Border Gavaskar series shouting 'stupid, stupid, stupid' after the wicketkeeper-batter threw away his wicket against Australia, the Indian legend lauded Pant with shouts of 'superb, superb, superb' when he smashed his 7th Test century against England at Leeds on Saturday. Pant had been at the receiving end of Gavaskar's anger during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 when, in the fourth Test of the series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), he went to attack a delivery, miscued his shot and gave a catch to third man. The dismissal angered the legendary India cricketer who was in the commentary booth, shouting 'stupid, stupid, stupid!'. On Saturday, a visibly enthusiastic Gavaskar on commentary said, 'Yes, superb, superb, superb. Absolutely terrific batting by the young man.' Another 𝐒 word from Sunny G…𝐒𝐔𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐁!🫡#SonySportsNetwork #GroundTumharaJeetHamari #ENGvIND #NayaIndia #DhaakadIndia #TeamIndia — Sony Sports Network (@SonySportsNetwk) June 21, 2025 Pant on Saturday went past MS Dhoni for the most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper in Test cricket, bringing up his seventh on the second day of the series opener against England. Pant struck a six off the first ball of the 100th over of India's first innings, clearing the fence off Shoaib Bashir to bring up the milestone. It was his first century since September 2024 when he scored 109 against Bangladesh. In 90 Tests, Dhoni had scored 4,876 runs with six tons and 33 fifties at an average of 38.09 and remains the highest run-scorer as an Indian wicketkeeper-batter in Tests. Pant, who completed 3,000 runs during this innings of 134 off 178 balls (12×4; 6×6), also has 15 fifties in 44 Tests and averages nearly 44. The third in this list is Wriddhiman Saha with two centuries, followed by Syed Kirmani and Farokh Engineer with two each. Nayan Mongia has also scored one century. India ultimately were bowled out by England on 471 runs as Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue took 4 wickets apiece.

Sunil Gavaskar forced to take back his 'stupid-stupid-stupid' remark after Rishabh Pant hits measured ton
After calling Rishabh Pant's shot 'stupid' during a Test in Australia, Sunil Gavaskar has changed his opinion following Pant's mature innings in the 1st Test against England at Headingley. Pant scored a brilliant century and helped India post a strong total. read more Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar had once called Rishabh Pant's shot 'stupid, stupid, stupid' during a Test match against Australia. But after watching Pant score a measured century against England in the 1st Test match at Headingley, Gavaskar has changed his opinion. During the first Test between India and England , Pant played a very mature knock. He took his time early on and slowly built his innings. Once he was set, he began attacking the bowlers with big shots and reached his 100 in style with a six, helping India get to a strong total. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD From 'stupid-stupid-stupid' to 'superb-superb-superb' Gavaskar, who was doing commentary on Sony Sports Network, praised Pant's batting in England. He said that Pant looked very comfortable even while defending against fast bowlers. This is very different from what happened during the Melbourne Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. 'It seems like that's how he plays. When he comes in to bat, on the second or third ball, he often uses his feet and hits a boundary. It makes him feel free and then allows him to play the way he wants. Over here, he's been measured in his approach—giving himself time out in the middle. But once he's in and the bowlers start to tire, that's when he begins to step down the pitch and really attack, hitting big shots, sixes, and boundaries,' Gavaskar said. 'Because he gives himself that time early on, it becomes easier for him to play those aggressive strokes later. When he defends, he seems to have so much time against the pace bowlers—it almost looks like he's taking the mickey out of them, saying, 'Look, I've got all the time in the world; I don't need to play a big shot, I'm just middling the ball. He's got enormous talent. I've seen him score hundreds in South Africa and Australia, and they've been absolutely unbelievable. There's such a great blend of defence and attack—starting with solid defence and then shifting to attack,' he added. In the match in Australia, Pant had batted patiently for 30 runs but then played a poor shot against part-time bowler Travis Head and got out. India were already under pressure, and Pant's wicket triggered a collapse. Gavaskar was very angry at the time and called it a 'stupid shot,' saying Pant had let the team down. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Stupid, stupid, stupid! You have two fielders there, you still go for that shot. You have missed the previous shot and look where you have been caught. You have been caught at deep third man. That is throwing away your wicket. Not in the situation that India was. You have to understand the situation as well. You cannot say that that's your natural game. I'm sorry that is not your natural game. That is a stupid shot that is letting your team down badly,' Sunil Gavaskar had said.
