DRIVEN by her deep love and longing for a school she taught at nine years ago, an American teacher has returned to Kodiang, in Jitra, Kedah, to reconnect with old friends, students and the community, Kosmo! Ahad reported.
Lauren Chow, 32, from Boston, the United States, had taught English at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tunku Bendahara, Kodiang, for two years, in 2015, through a teacher exchange programme between the United States and Malaysia.
According to Chow, her years in Malaysia were full of good memories due to the friendly locals.
'Living in Kodiang for two years was an incredibly happy experience. The villagers were so kind, friendly, and welcoming. Coming back to the village to meet old friends and former students, makes me simply happy again.'
Even more remarkable is that, despite now living and teaching in Jakarta under the same programme, she still remembers how to speak Bahasa Malaysia with a Kedahan accent.
Chow, who is on a five-day visit in Malaysia, said that her experience in Kedah taught her the richness of the local culture and the language.
'Initially, I only knew the words 'terima kasih', 'makan' and 'kenyang', but the local community here supported me and taught me the language,' she said.
> Actress and singer Bella Astillah says that she is uncomfortable about openly talking about her relationship with Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, BH Ahad reported.
Referring to the nickname given to them by netizens, BASS (Bella and Syed Saddiq), she said it was not pleasant publicly divulging any information about them.
'If possible, I don't want personal stories to overshadow his efforts in helping the people of Muar. He doesn't want his political career to be clouded by other stories,' said Bella, 31.
Asked about what she thinks of Syed Saddiq, Bella said that the Muar MP always puts others' interests ahead of his.
'Perhaps the clearest example was when he refused payment for the campaign work he managed, instead requesting that the money be directed into a fund set up to support the people of Muar.
'Looking at everything he's done, I'd say he's a dedicated person driven by a genuine love for his country,' said Bella.
Syed Saddiq, 33, and Bella Astillah's friendship blossomed after they collaborated as ambassadors for a local clothing brand.
The politician subsequently appeared in Bella's music video, Tapi Bukan Denganmu.
Despite their frequent public appearances together, neither Syed Saddiq nor Bella has confirmed the nature of their relationship.

Supermodel ties the knot six years after ex-beau's death

Compiled by FAZLEENA AZIZ AND C. ARUNO SUPERMODEL Bella Su finally got married, six years after the death of her boyfriend and actor Godfrey Gao, China Press reported. The 29-year-old held a low-key wedding in China's Yunnan province on June 17 and was photographed wearing a low-cut wedding gown. Her husband's identity, however, remained a mystery as his face was always hidden behind an emoji on photographs posted online. Although Su is in a new relationship, she kept Gao's memory alive at her wedding by featuring the sunflower, which was the late actor's favourite flower, as part of the reception's decoration. 'Love never disappears, but continues to thrive in a different form!' she said in her wedding speech in reference to Gao. According to those who attended the wedding, it was the groom who decided on having a segment honouring Gao's memory during the reception. It was reported that Gao, 35, who was a Taiwan-born Canadian model and actor, collapsed while filming a Chinese variety series in 2019. He collapsed at around 2am on Nov 27, 2019, after filming for 17 hours that day and later failed to be resuscitated at a hospital. After his death, Su revealed that she and Gao had been dating in secret. She was seen attending his wake and funeral together with Gao's family. Su met her husband two years ago while on a trip to Shanghai to visit her maternal grandmother. They decided to get married this year. Marriages made to keep up with appearances

Compiled by FAZLEENA AZIZ AND C. ARUNO INDIVIDUALS who are homosexuals or bisexuals are said to be marrying women as a way to hide their sexuality, Kosmo! reported. This not only puts the woman in a place where her rights are denied but also has her being used like a 'trophy' in front of others, the report claimed. Laila (not her real name) shared how she found her husband's holiday pictures with his boyfriend at a resort overseas. She is in a long-distance relationship with her banker husband, who works in the Klang Valley, while she is a civil servant working on the East Coast. 'He comes back once in a while; sometimes for months on end we don't even meet. When we were together, I didn't suspect anything, but it got weird when he chose to sleep separately. 'I never really thought much about it as our marriage was arranged. But after a year, I started getting suspicious because he didn't seem to be interested in women. 'When I asked him about our honeymoon, he often gave excuses,' she said. After Laila found his pictures with other men, she was heartbroken. She divorced him. According to general, sexual and reproductive medical practitioner Dr Ahmad Ramdan Zainordin, some 30 gay couples sought medical treatment at his clinic every month. He said most of these couples are aged between 20 and 40 years old and married to women. 'Based on the examination, many of their wives are unaware of their husbands' sexuality. Most of them don't reveal anything about their wives and often come to the clinics alone. 'As such, the wives don't know the status of their infections. Some of these men have never consummated their marriages with their wives as well,' he said, adding that the marriage was merely to keep up appearances. > Actress and entrepreneur Nur Fazura Sharifuddin, 42, is still not open to finding a replacement after separating from her husband, actor Fattah Amin, on Oct 7 last year, Harian Metro reported. Fazura, when met at the launch of the music video for Luar Biasa, said that even though time has passed, it feels like just yesterday that she went through a very difficult episode in her life.
