'Cheers' star George Wendt's cause of death is released

Yahoo11-06-2025

"Cheers" star George Wendt had experienced years of health issues when he died suddenly in May.
According to a death certificate reviewed by USA TODAY on June 10, the 76-year-old actor was pronounced dead at his Studio City, California, home the morning of May 20. His wife of nearly 50 years, Bernadette Birkett, informed authorities of his death.
Wendt's cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest, when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood. Contributing conditions were years of congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease and hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. He also had end-stage renal disease and hyperlipidemia (high blood cholesterol).

Heart failure, which can develop as a result of high blood pressure and coronary artery disease, impacts the organ's ability to pump blood effectively. Per Mayo Clinic, coronary artery disease can sometimes lead to sudden cardiac arrest – or the loss of heart activity because of the irregular rhythm of the heart – as plaque build-up causes arteries to narrow.
End-stage renal disease is the last stage of long-term kidney disease and indicates the kidneys' inability to support normal bodily functions like getting rid of waste and excess water.
According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, between 300,000 and 450,000 people die each year from cardiac arrest. Nine out of 10 people who experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital will die. CPR and defibrillation can be used to treat a person in cardiac arrest while awaiting emergency services.
Wendt, best known for his beloved role as beer-quaffing barfly Norm Peterson for all 11 seasons of the iconic NBC comedy, earned six consecutive best supporting actor Emmy nominations playing his one line-delivering Everyman character. He also played the Norm role in the short-lived spinoff "The Tortellis," a 1990 episode of NBC's "Wings," and in an episode of the "Cheers" spinoff "Frasier," featuring psychiatrist Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer).
His death occurred on the 32nd anniversary of the final "Cheers" episode that aired on May 20, 1993.
In one of his final public appearances at the 75th Emmy Awards in 2024, Wendt reunited with his "Cheers" co-stars Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Grammer and Ratzenberger on a recreated set of the show's iconic Boston bar. Wendt's memorable entrance brought one final "Norm!" from his assembled costars.
The cast honored Wendt in individual tributes following the news of his death. Danson noted it would "take me a long time to get used to this" in a statement shared with USA TODAY.
Ratzenberger said, "What you saw on screen was exactly who (Wendt) was off screen with impeccable comedic timing and a deep loyalty to those he loved." Perlman called Wendt "the sweetest, kindest man I ever met" and Grammer described him as "an extraordinary guy."

Tom Sandoval's America's Got Talent Audition Leaves Judges in Shock

Originally appeared on E! Online is pumping up the volume on America's Got Talent. The Vanderpump Rules alum shocked fans by making his unexpected debut on the NBC reality competition series. In a preview of the show's June 24 episode, the Tom Sandoval & the Most Extras frontman teased why he's taking his talents to the AGT stage two years after Scandoval—his cheating scandal involving exes and —became a media sensation. "My name is Tom Sandoval, I was the most hated man in America," Tom said in a clip posted to Instagram June 20. "This is the chance to show who I am as a musician." The Bravo star then sang a cover of A-ha's classic '80s hit "Take on Me" dressed in black pants and a glittering, bedazzled green jacket. As he opened the song, judge looked very skeptical at his vocal abilities. However, Tom impressively belted out the lyrics much to her (and the audience's) surprise. Meanwhile, notoriously harsh judge looked not too happy at the beginning after first laying eyed on The Traitors alum, but later flashed a giant smile as he enjoyed the performance. FilmLA 5-Year Contract Approved Amid Worker Complaints

The Los Angeles Board of Public Works approved a new five-year contract with FilmLA on Friday, despite calls from industry groups for changes to the city's film permitting system. The Los Angeles Board of Public Works voted 4-0 to extend FilmLA's contract through June 2030, just days before the current deal was set to expire. Adrin Nazarian, who represents a district that includes North Hollywood, where many IATSE West Coast locals are headquartered, previously spoke about the rapid decline in Los Angeles production as studios have moved shoots to other states and countries amidst pressure to reduce production spending and make their streaming services profitable. 'We've been regressing and losing so much ground,' he stated. 'Now we're losing commercials and platforms and miniseries. We can't have this happen.' While a handful of high-profile productions have moved to California, including NBC's 'Suits L.A.' and the second season of Prime Video's popular 'Fallout,' TV production in Los Angeles has fallen 58% from its all-time high in 2021, according to the latest quarterly report from FilmLA. In response to this, Hollywood unions and studios, who two years ago were in conflict amid an industry-paralyzing double strike, have joined forces to lobby local and state officials to make changes that would allow California to become a more competitive production hub. In Sacramento, a pair of bills that would expand the types of productions eligible for the California Film and Television Tax Credit have been slowly advancing through various committees. The bills have the support of Gov. Gavin Newsom, who last fall called for the program's cap to be raised from $330 million to $750 million. Among the fees required of L.A. shoots that are reduced or nonexistent in other cities include county and city fees for fire review and notification, hourly fees for public safety and fire workers and additional fees for shoots that take place on roads, including for permit applications, road inspections and closures. Charlie from 'Love Island USA' on Hannah and Pepe: 'How can I watch that?'

"Love Island USA" Season 7's Charlie Georgiou says the women were too loyal to Huda to vote her out of the villa, calling himself an "easy target." Charlie Georgiou is still reeling from being dumped by his fellow "Love Island USA" cast members. "It's savage; it's brutal," he tells USA TODAY. Since his villa roommates voted to oust him over the controversial Huda Mustafa and Taylor Williams, Charlie has been in a Fiji hotel room watching Netflix — and also catching up on the dozen Season 7 episodes in which the actor/model appeared. But the season's first male bombshell isn't eager to follow the most recent episodes, in which the woman he'd hit it off with, Hannah Fields, is happily moving on with Pepe Garcia-Gonzalez a day after uncontrollably sobbing over Charlie's departure. "When I was watching the episode of my departure, I saw that the next day, obviously they sent Pepe and Hannah and all the new couples on dates. And I was like, 'I can't watch that, man.' How can I watch that?" Charlie says. "Any human being wouldn't want to watch someone that they've just been establishing connections with go off and get to have this intimate experience with someone else." He adds, "Yeah, I don't want to watch the (newer) episodes. It's not a nice feeling. ... I'm just a bit worried I'll see something that makes me feel a bit (bad)." Charlie says he was the 'easy target'; the women 'weren't about to dump' Huda In Episode 12, viewers for the first time had their say in who couples up. When Hannah was paired with Pepe, Charlie was left on the chopping block alongside Taylor and Huda. Chelley, Cierra and Amaya's votes sealed Charlie's fate. This "disappointed" Charlie, who'd thought he had formed better friendships with the women. "Amaya, I always looked out for her. She cried in front of me. Me and Hannah looked after her and made her feel better, and she confided in us and we consoled her," Charlie says. "So for her to be the final executor of my time there ... the irony of it. I was like, 'No way, man, I can't believe it's you that's done it." As for Cierra, her vote to dump Charlie "let me down because ... we went in this game together. We went into the villa together. We'd have one-on-one conversations and check in on each other. He'd hoped he would sway his fellow islanders by giving his "last-ditch effort" pitch that he and Hannah had just found a new lease on their budding love. "And even that wasn't enough," Charlie says. "So I think I was always going to be the easy target." The women's loyalty to each other was the nail in the coffin, Charlie believes. "I just feel like the girls weren't about to dump (Huda)," he says. "They're not going to dump their girlfriend that they're upstairs with. They're watching her cry. They're not going to do that. They're going to go for me."
