Delhi launches comprehensive study to tackle student dropouts and enhance school education quality

NEW DELHI: A study is underway into reasons for student dropout and how to improve the overall quality of school education, a Delhi government official has said. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) is conducting multiple research projects. One of the key areas being examined is the impact of Right to Education (RTE) entitlements with a focus on the
PM Poshan scheme
, according to an SCERT official.
The Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN) scheme, which provides hot meals to students in government and government-aided schools, is linked to reducing school dropout rates.
The studies will also explore the relevance of teachers in the digital age, which is increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, the official said.
Another important focus is the evaluation of the leadership training programmes for the school heads conducted by SCERT. The research will assess whether school heads are actively analysing enrolment, attendance, and dropout data to make informed decisions that contribute to better school performance, he said.
Another study is underway to develop effective methods to measure and enhance teacher performance, the official added. The data for these projects will be collected from various stakeholders, including school heads, teachers, students, and parents.
Field investigators from SCERT and District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) will visit randomly selected schools across Delhi for data collection.
The official said that the stakeholders have been instructed to submit their reports by May 10.

Foundation Literacy and Numeracy baseline test in all govt schools

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has directed all District Educational Officers to conduct a baseline test for implementation of Foundation Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) for classes 1 to 5 and Learning Improvement Programme (LIP) for classes 6 to 9. The test will be conducted from June 25 to 30 and the results are to be uploaded on the Telangana School Education app by July 15. According to SCERT, the baseline test and findings assess learning gaps and improve subject-specific learning outcomes among students in all government schools.

8,583 students allotted seats in second phase free admissions in private schools in A.P.

Samagra Shiksha State Project Director B. Srinivasa Rao on Friday said 8,583 students had been selected in the second and final phase of lottery conducted to select students for free admissions under clause 12 (1) (C) of the Right to Education (RTE) Act in private unaided schools across the State for the academic year 2025-26. In a statement, Mr. Rao said information about the selected students will be sent via SMS to the mobile numbers of the parents, and it will also be made available on the website The students who were allotted seats must visit their respective schools with valid documents between June 21 and 28 to confirm their admissions. Chandigarh leads Centre's school education index: Check rankings of other states

Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Gujarat, Odisha, Kerala, Haryana, Goa, Maharashtra, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu and Rajasthan recorded significant improvement in performance among all states and Union Territories (UTs) in the latest Performance Grading Index 2.0 report. Chandigarh recorded maximum improvement and achieved a score of 703 out of 1,000, corresponding to Prachesta 1 grade. Emerging as the best-performing Union Territory, it improved its score from 687.8 recorded in the 2022-23 session. The education sector evaluation report is based on six key domains, namely, learning outcomes and quality, access, infrastructure, equity, governance processes, teacher education and training. It features data from Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+), National Achievement Survey (NAS), PM POSHAN portal, PRABAND portal and Vidyanjali Portal. It is important to note that none of the states featured in the top-scoring range, which is above 761. A total of 24 States and Union Territories improved their scores in 2023-24 compared with the previous year's data. Notably, Chandigarh leads in only two of the six domains, which are infrastructure and facilities and equity. Delhi, Punjab and Gujarat recorded a score above 600. Delhi's score stood at 623.7, indicating marked improvement from the previous 579.3. Punjab and Gujarat, other top performers, recorded scores of 631.2 and 614.4, respectively. On the other hand, Meghalaya registered least improvement in performance indicators and recorded the least score of 417.9, as per Performance Grading Index report. All of northeastern states, including Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh recorded a score below 500, except for Sikkim, Tripura and Assam. Chandigarh's school education director, Harsuhinderpal Singh Brar, said, 'At the heart of this success are our teachers and the encouragement by the UT administrator and chief secretary, along with the integration between various departments,' HT reported.
