GAA fans furious ahead of bumper weekend of All-Ireland action

As another bumper weekend of GAA action approaches, fans have been taking to social media to voice their anger over which games are being televised on free-to-air TV and which are being shown on GAA+. RTE will televise the two All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship quarter-finals of Dublin v Limerick and Galway v Tipperary on Saturday. The broadcaster will also show the Tailteann Cup semi-finals as Wicklow face Limerick and Kildare take on Fermanagh on Sunday. However, it is the decision to show the four All-Ireland Senior Football Championship preliminary quarter-finals on GAA+ that is angering supporters ahead of the weekend, with three of the top four in the outright Championship betting in action. Then on Sunday, Down host Galway in Newry before the clash of Donegal and Louth in Ballybofey. "Dublin v Cork, football's biggest game of the weekend, is on a subscription channel online Sat. It's on at the same time as the biggest hurling game of the weekend on RTE. They couldn't get less people to watch the biggest football game of the weekend if they tried," stated one fan. Another asked: "Where are the important gaelic football matches ,also known as the Preliminary Quarter Finals been Televised, Not on free to Air?" Someone else said: "Taking all the big games this weekend, @rte and you wonder why numbers are declining . RTE's comedy drama The Dry begins filming final series

Actor Ciaran Hinds has returned to film the final series of RTE's comedy drama, The Dry. Filming has begun in Dublin on the third and final series. The eight-part series will once again follow Róisín Gallagher's character Shiv Sheridan, a recovering alcoholic navigating life and sobriety within her dysfunctional family. Speaking about the final season, writer Nancy Harris said the final series is set to be 'painfully honest'. She said: "It has been a true joy to see audiences embrace the Sheridan family in all their dysfunctional glory. The third and final season aims to go deeper than ever before… both surprising, funny and (painfully) honest." Shiv was last seen choosing herself over a faltering romance, as her ex-boyfriend departed for Melbourne alone. In the new series, she meets Daryl, a charismatic but unsettling Australian (played by Rick Donald), who unexpectedly reappears in her life at a recovery meeting. Returning cast members include Siobhán Cullen as Caroline, Adam Richardson as Ant, Oscar nominee Ciarán Hinds as Tom, Pom Boyd as Bernie, Moe Dunford as Jack, and Eoin Duffy as Rory. The final chapter promises a deeper dive into the lives of the Sheridans, as a long-buried family secret surfaces and triggers a fresh wave of emotional reckoning. As the family struggles to move forward, Shiv is forced to confront the possibility that the real problem may not be alcohol, past lovers, or her family, but herself. RTÉ's Director of Acquisitions & Co-Productions, Dermot Horan, said the broadcaster was "delighted" to return to the Sheridans' world. He said: "Nancy Harris' scripts are at times funny and at times tragic - and that is why we all feel we can relate to these memorable characters." ITV's Head of Scripted Comedy, Nana Hughes, praised the show's blend of humour and emotion, saying: "Nancy's award-winning writing delivers more of the chaotic mess that is the Sheridan family. I can't wait to see what Paddy and the cast bring to the finale." Executive Producer Emma Norton of Element Pictures added that the team was "thrilled" to be filming the final series, promising "an extraordinary cast" and some "very fun new faces".

Muslim cleric says Eid in Croke Park is not ‘disrespectful to Bloody Sunday martyrs'

'These people that believe that we're undermining Christian or Irish values, they obviously have no clue' The chairperson of the Irish Muslim Council in Ireland has defended the celebration of Eid al-Adha in Croke Park. Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri was speaking after protestors gathered outside the Dublin sporting ground earlier this month as attendees arrived. More than 700 members of the Muslim community took part in the June 6 celebration of the feast of the sacrifice, regarded as the holiest festival in the Muslim calendar. As the call to prayer began inside, a woman stood up holding rosary beads and began to recite the Hail Mary, RTE reported. She shouted "shame" as she was escorted away by security. There was no reaction from members of the Muslim community in attendance, which included children. Dr Al-Quadri said the tactics were "not nice or respectable" as he pointed out the doors of mosques are open for Irish people to visit. Croke Park News in 90 Seconds - June 19th He has now posted a defence of the event in an online post where he argued that it is not 'disrespectful to the martyrs of Bloody Sunday'. 'Some people wonder why Muslims celebrate Eid in Croke Park,' he began. 'This is a genuine question (asked) out of sincerity, and there is no other bias or reason. 'Then there are also people that have the same question but they will add to that. 'Muslims disrespected Croke Park, and undermined Christian and Irish nationalist values by celebrating Eid in Croke Park. 'First of all, this did not happen for the first time, this was the sixth time that the Muslim community in Ireland celebrated the Eid prayers in Croke Park. 'Croke Park holds a significant place in the hearts of millions of Irish people and this is because of the tragedy that unfolded (there) more than 100 years ago.' Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri posts his message Dr Al-Qadri relates the events of Bloody Sunday when 'British troops indiscriminately started shooting at the innocent spectators and the sportsman'. 'One of the very famous Irish sportsmen Michael Hogan also was one of the victims of this slaughter, so no wonder Croke Park holds a significant place and is sacred place in the hearts of millions of Irish people. 'And we, as Muslims understand that, we honour that and we respect that immensely, but it is important for you to understand that Croke Park, the venue, has been used for various different events. 'It has been used to accommodate musical events, it has been accommodating commercial events, it has also opened its doors for other faith communities. 'So, (to) these people that say the celebration of Eid in Croke Park undermines Christian value, I ask, when did they object to commercial events? When did they object to the musical events. When did they object to the events that take place in Croke Park that go against the Christian teachings? 'Did they ever object, did they ever protest? They did not. And the reason is not because these people want to defend Christian values. 'Most of these people do not even agree with the Christian faith leaders. Most of these people consider the Christian faith leaders, including the Pope, as traitors. 'Most of these people do not even attend Sunday Mass, most haven't studied the Christian faith (or) the Bible. 'Did they know that at many Eid events in Croke Park previously we have had as main guests the archbishops of the Catholic Church as well as of the Church of Ireland? 'If the Eid in Croke Park in any way undermines Christian values, why did the faith leaders attend? 'This is not just an event for Muslims in fact, as the organiser, I have always invited people of various different backgrounds. 'As I mentioned the archbishops have always been there, other faith leaders have attended including Rabbi Zalman Lent of the Jewish community. 'We also invited political leaders, and politicians have attended. We've had our very own president, the honourable Michael D Higgins send out an Eid message to the Muslim community. 'So, these people that believe that we're undermining Christian or Irish values, they obviously have no clue.' Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri also extended an invitation to anybody that is genuinely interested in dialogue or in understanding the Muslim faith and community 'and wants to build bridges to reach out to me and meet up'.

Officials must ensure protection of children, says KSCPCR chief

Ensuring the safety and protection of children is the foremost duty of all government officials, said chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) K. Naganna Gowda. He was speaking at a district-level progress review meeting at the Nazir Saab Hall of the Zilla Panchayat in Ballari on Wednesday. The meeting focused on the implementation of the Right to Education Act (RTE) 2009, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (PoCSO) Act 2012 and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015. The session was attended by commission members, officials from various departments at the district and taluk levels and heads of childcare institutions. Discussions centred on child-related programmes and their implementation status. Mr. Gowda stressed that all departments working in the field of child welfare must function in coordination to protect children's rights and to bring them into the mainstream. He emphasised the importance of collaborative action in ensuring that children receive the protection and care they deserve. Presenting data during the meeting, Child Protection Officer from the District Child Protection Unit Elenagappa said that between April 2024 and March 2025, a total of 123 child marriage cases have been prevented in the district. Of these, 11 actually took place and First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed in all the 11 cases, he said. In the period between April and May 2025, 45 cases of child marriage attempts have been recorded, while 11 have occurred. FIRs have been registered in four of those cases. Responding to the report, Mr. Gowda directed that whenever incidents of child marriage are identified, the authorities concerned must immediately visit the homes of the boy and girl involved. 'The officers should engage in meaningful counselling with parents, obtain a written undertaking and clearly inform them that marriage should only be conducted after the child turns 18. Officials from the local gram panchayat, including the Panchayat Development Officer, the Tahsildar, Executive Officers, and representatives from the Education, Health, Police and Child Protection departments must work together in these matters,' he said, directing the officials to file FIRs without any delay in cases where child marriage has occurred.
