Freja New York, the luxury vegan handbag and accessories label founded by Jenny Lei, is opening the doors to its first New York pop-up in Soho today. From May 1-4, fans of the brand can experience the label's designs in-person, including its sold-out Mini Chrystie Bag in the shade Butter.
When Lei launched Freja New York straight out of college, she didn't expect or anticipate the huge success her brand would become in such few years to follow. Without formal design training or industry connections, Lei had something more valuable: a genuine problem to solve. After struggling to find a functional and luxurious bag that also fitted her budget for an important interview, she saw a significant gap in the market, and was determined to create what established designers had overlooked — all off the back of her drop-shipping and marketing experience gained while studying at Cornell University.
'I knew what they needed,' says Lei, referring to how she designed her first bag: something classic, understated, and functional — something she would've found to be perfect for that crucial interview. After almost 10 months of back and forth in samples as well as tweaks in designs, the Linnea tote was born, and is still one of the brand's bestsellers to this date.

'All I had was my story,' Lei says to me, when asked about the early days when she first launched Freja New York to the world. 'And I think the people that read it thought, 'I want to give her a chance. I want to support her.'' It's that authentic connection with customers, in combination with Lei's meticulous attention to every finer details of her offering, that have proven to be Freja New York's secret weapon in a crowded accessories market.
Lei's approach to brand building has been methodical yet bold. Rather than rushing to expand, she deliberately started with just one design per year for the first three years, perfecting each silhouette before moving to the next. This controlled pace allowed Freja New York to establish its identity while Lei developed her business acumen.
'Every year, it's a different business, almost,' Lei reflects. What began as a one-woman operation with her figuring out on her own how to sell the first 300 bags in the thick of the pandemic (her inaugural order was to arrive in late February, 2020) — 'just one a day' as she puts it — has evolved into a team of over a dozen people spanning creative direction, customer experience, operations, and product development. The direct-to-consumer brand has been fully self-funded since day one and reportedly generated eight-figure revenue in 2024.
If there's one thing that describes Lei's business philosophy, it would be intentionality. 'I learned that you can sell any product with good marketing. But a great product sells itself,' Lei shares in one of her blog posts on the brand's website, speaking of the lessons she learned from her drop-shipping days. 'I vowed to myself that my next venture would be built for the long term.'

And that's the DNA of Freja New York in a nutshell. Unlike many fashion brands that chase seasonal trends, Freja New York releases individual styles for each season, perfecting them through customer feedback. The brand recently introduced the Hudson Bag to their core line — a modern sculptural interpretation of the classic Freja silhouette, and in signature Freja style — diligently designed and developed over nearly a year.
This customer-centric approach extends beyond product design. Lei personally emails top customers quarterly to thank them for their support. She shares factory tours and cost breakdowns on the brand's website, embracing transparency in an industry often shrouded in secrecy. This genuine connection has fostered a remarkably loyal community — more fan club than customer base — with enthusiasts lining up at pop-up events to meet Lei in person.
Recognition came in December 2024 when Lei was named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 list, though she admits the achievement took time to process. 'I think it didn't hit me until maybe earlier this year,' she says. 'I think because it was Black Friday, it was Q4, there was so much going on.'

Adhering to the vow she's made at the start of Freja New York, Lei has expanded her vision beyond just business growth. In August 2024, the brand launched the Freja Fund, a business bootcamp providing grants and mentorship for women entrepreneurs — and nearly 300 applications were received shortly after its announcement. Lei selected seven diverse businesses ranging from skincare to conversation design for gatherings.
'Just making more money isn't doing it for me,' Lei explains about her motivation behind the fund. 'If I can help other women achieve their dreams in some way — that'd be great. I don't know if I'm ready to do this, but I don't think we're ever going to be ready. So let's just do it and learn together.'
As for the future, Lei plans to nearly double Freja New York's product offerings to 25-30 styles this year, including a potential expansion into men's accessories. She's also embracing a more philosophical approach to growth — the brand's first-ever New York City pop-up marks a new chapter for Freja New York as it expands its presence through in-person retail, following rapid digital growth.
'We're not in a hurry to know where... there's no destination. We're all just vibing and trying to have a good time,' she reflects with a smile.

In its announcement, the Federal Open Market Committee—the branch responsible for setting monetary policy—stated that it would continue to assess risks and work toward its 2 percent inflation target. At a press conference following the announcement, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that the U.S. economy was "in solid shape," but warned of "very high uncertainty" due to the impact of tariffs. "Everyone that I know is forecasting a meaningful increase in inflation in coming months from tariffs," he said, "because someone has to pay for the tariffs." What People Are Saying Justyna Zabinska-La Monica, senior manager of Business Cycle Indicators at The Conference Board, said: "The LEI for the US fell again in May, but only marginally. The recovery of stock prices after the April drop was the main positive contributor to the Index. However, consumers' pessimism, persistently weak new orders in manufacturing, a second consecutive month of rising initial claims for unemployment insurance, and a decline in housing permits weighed on the Index, leading to May's overall decline. "With the substantial negatively revised drop in April and the further downtick in May, the six-month growth rate of the Index has become more negative, triggering the recession signal." What Happens Next The Conference Board warned that the six consecutive drops have now pushed the index into the range that typically signals an imminent recession. However, it has held off on this prediction and currently anticipates only a "significant slowdown in economic growth" this year. Both the S&P 500 (SPX) and Nasdaq 100 (NDX) closed the Friday trading session in the red as geopolitical and economic uncertainty continue to persist. Confident Investing Starts Here: The market received a morning boost after President Trump announced on the Juneteenth holiday that the U.S. would hold off from striking Iran's nuclear facilities for two weeks to allow a window for negotiations. However, those gains were quickly erased after The Conference Board's Leading Economic Index (LEI) flashed a recession signal. The LEI has fallen by 2.7% for the six months ended May, with its annualized six-month growth rate dropping below -4.1%, one of the two requirements that trigger a recession warning. The other requirement occurs when the six-month diffusion index reaches or drops below 50, which signals that most of the components within the LEI are falling. The components include manufacturing, labor market, sentiment, and credit statistics, among others. The recession indicator isn't perfect, although it did precede the recessions of 2000 and 2008 while issuing false signals in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Meanwhile, chip and AI stocks took a hit after a Wall Street Journal report that the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) is planning on restricting Samsung, SK Hynix, and Taiwan Semiconductor's (TSM) access to American chip-making technology in their Chinese factories. The three companies currently enjoy a blanket waiver on moving U.S. chip-making equipment to their Chinese facilities, although DOC export controls head Jeffrey Kessler has informed them that the waivers could be cancelled. The policy hasn't been set in stone yet, however. In interest rate news, Fed officials are split on when to cut rates sooner or later. Fed Governor Christopher Waller supports a rate drop as soon as July while Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin doesn't see a rush for lower rates while the labor market and consumer spending remain healthy. 'I don't think the data gives us any rush to cut… I am very conscious that we've not been at our inflation target for four years,' said Barkin in an interview with Reuters.

Pre-Markets Climb on Rate Cut Visibility
Friday, June 20, 2025We finish off the trading week after a nice edge-of-summer break for Juneteenth yesterday. Pre-market indexes are climbing a quarter-point to a third of a point higher at this hour, with the small-cap Russell 2000 already up more than +1%. Only the Russell is up over the past five trading days, but the other indexes are Dow is up +114 points right now, with the S&P 500 +14. The Nasdaq is +62 points at this hour, with the Russell +25 points. Currently, only the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq are up (marginally) year to date. Bond yields are remaining in place, more or less: +4.44% on the 10-year, +3.95% on the 2-year and +4.94% on the 30-year. Headline Philly Fed manufacturing came in at -4.0 for June, equalling the prior month's level and notching the third-straight month lower. Business conditions, capital expenditures, new orders and prices paid were all lower last month. And the Employment Index sank lower than expected, to -9.8. This could be seen as a further indication of a softening labor market in the traders are not missing this opportunity: a sinking Employment Index, while a relatively minor part of the Philly Fed Index (which focuses on the region around Philadelphia and the goods-producing sector there), do point to an opening for the Fed to lower interest rates at some point in the future. But the Fed would have to see demonstrably worse employment numbers first. We will most certainly track this new infusion of positivity into the stock market; it may even bring us a positive trading week over all, depending on the size of gains. We also have to keep our eyes and ears open about potential trade deals ahead of the July 9th deadline, as well as any new developments in the Middle East, on which President Trump has cooled his rhetoric (with yet another self-imposed deadline of two weeks before making a decision on whether to make a move on Iran).After today's open, the latest U.S. Leading Economic Indicators (LEI) report will come out for the month of May. Expectations are for a headline to drift marginally negative: -0.1%, from a deeper -1.0% for April and -0.8% for March. We are now scraping 9-year lows on LEI — well off the late 2021/early 2022 April, all components were lower except Lending Credit and Manufacturing New Orders, both of which were up marginally. Meanwhile, the Coincident Economic Index (CEI) has fully recovered from Covid-era lows to keep its upward trajectory. While the LEI is a leading indicator for growth, the CEI reflects current economic conditions. It's a big data week starting on Monday. Various prints on the housing market, Services and Manufacturing PMI, Durable Goods, Jobless Claims and Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) — a week from today — will all be hitting the tape. PCE levels in particular are important, as they tend to have a pronounced effect on future Fed monetary policy or comments about this article and/or author?
