India vs England 2025: What will Shubman Gill-led Indian team's playing XI be for Headingley Test?
While England had already announced their playing XI a couple of days before the start of the five-match Test series against India in Headingley, the Shubman Gill-led Indian team isn't expected to make any such announcement until toss on Friday. read more India captain Shubman Gill bats in the nets at Headingley, Leeds ahead of the first Test against England. Reuters A new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship begins for both England and India on Friday as they face each other on the opening day of a at Headingley, Leeds. And besides the start of a new WTC cycle, the first Test will also mark the beginning of a new era, for it will be the first Test since Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket in the span of a week last month. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Additionally, the two teams are set to compete for a brand new trophy, with the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy now replacing the Pataudi Trophy and the Anthony de Mello Trophy – which had previously been awarded to the winner of an India-England Test series held in England and India respectively. But what will the team combination be like for the two teams involved at the start of the marquee series? Ben Stokes and company had already unveiled theirs two days ago with Ollie Pope continuing to bat at No 3, at all-rounder Jacob Bethell's expense, and Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse returning to the pace department. What India's playing XI is expected to look like for the first Test against England India doesn't quite follow the trend of announcing their playing XI a day or two before the game, a trend that has been primarily followed by England and Australia, and while a couple of positions have been confirmed in the build-up to the Headingley Test, the full playing XI will not be confirmed until the two captains walk out for toss on Friday. There will be extensive changes from the last time India played Test cricket – in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia where the iconic trio of Kohli, Rohit and R Ashwin had made their final appearances in whites (international cricket in spin icon Ashwin's case). Senior batter KL Rahul had formed a successful pairing with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order in Australia and the team management is likely to continue with that combination going forward. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul are expected to continue opening the batting in the Test format for India. AP Gill, who had started out as all-formats opener before moving to one-down in Tests, will climb down another spot to fill the Kohli-sized void at No 4 in the upcoming series , as confirmed by his deputy Rishabh Pant earlier this week. The 25-year-old refused to take a name when asked about India's next No 3 in Tests during the pre-match press conference in Headingley on Thursday. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, However, given the kind of red-hot form he's has been in heading into the England tour, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudharsan has made himself the top candidate to succeed the newly-appointed Test captain at the slot. Karun Nair, meanwhile, has made himself the top candidate to fill the No 6 slot – between Pant and spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja – thanks to his incredible numbers in the 2024-25 domestic season. Additionally, there will be a toss-up between seam-bowling all-rounders Shardul Thakur, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Kuldeep Yadav, in which Thakur currently appears as the front-runner given his wicket-taking ability along with his unbeaten 122 in the intra-squad match in Beckenham earlier this month. Pace star Jasprit Bumrah won't be playing all the matches in the series but will be leading the attack in the opening game in Headingley, sharing the new ball with Mohammed Siraj. As for the third front-line seamer, Arshdeep Singh might have to wait a bit longer for his Test debut with Prasidh Krishna ahead of him in the pecking order. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India's predicted playing XI for the first Test against England: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, B Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur/Nitish Kumar Reddy/Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj. India's Tour Of England 2025: A Brief History Of IND In ENG
Ahead of India's 2025 tour of England, here is a look at the history of the Indian cricket team's performances on English soil. Team India are slated to take on England in a five-match Test series slated to begin on the 20th of the month as new skipper Shubman Gill gears up for his captaincy debut on the former coloniser's territory. Ahead of India's 2025 tour of England, here is a look at the history of the Indian cricket team's performances on English soil. India and England share a long history, with the Men In Blues' first tour of England coming all the way back in the year 1932, which went the way of England as the hosts clinched the only game of the tour. India returned in the year 1936 to claim their first draw on English soil, but fell to a 2-0 defeat in the three-match series between the two nations. It was a decade before Indian faced the Englishmen on enemy territory again, but this time in 1946, the Indian side managed two draws in a three-game series that ended in favour of England, who had registered a win. In 1952, the Englishmen posted yet another series win in a four-match series as the hosts managed three wins and a draw. Things got worse for the tourists in 1959 as the English unit blanked Indian in a 5-0 drubbing, before emulating the feat in a three-game series in 1967. 1971 was a historic year for Indian cricket as the visitors picked up their first Test win on English solid and eventually the series as Team India finished the three-match-series with a win, two draws and absolutely no defeats. The English restored their supremacy in 1974 with a 3-0 series win, before edging out their rivals in a four-match series in 1979. England picked up a slender win in the following 1990 three-match series with two games ending in a draw and the hosts triumphing in the other, before replicating the same six years later when India came visiting. The 2002 season of India's tour to England finished in a stalemate as both sides won a game each while sharing the spoils on two occasions in a four-match series. But, India took the 2007 series all to themselves as they picked up a win and pulled off a couple of draws to close out the three-game tour as winners. England enjoyed a whitewash of Indian in the 2011 series, winning all four Tests in the tour. The Three Lions also clinched the five-match 2014 series 3-1 and did one better with a 4-1 series win in 2018. The most recent Indian Test tour of England, in the year 2021, remains fresh in the memory of fans as India fought to split the series 2-2, with the other game finishing in a draw.
