'I ditched my Laneige lip balm for a £4 alternative - one thing stuck with me'

'I ditched my Laneige lip balm for a £4 alternative - one thing stuck with me'

Daily Mirror16-05-2025

I've loved my Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask for a while now and double it up as a lip balm, but a cheaper Boots alternative caught my eye and after trying it, this one thing stuck with me
When I first saw the Laneige Sleeping Lip Mask trending on social media, I knew I had to have one. The small tub, the moisture and gloss it offered - it was marketed as a high quality lip balm and one I added to my shopping haul immediately.
I've been careful not to use too much and have managed to make my Sleeping Lip Mask last well over six months, only using it for the special evenings when I fancy a pamper session before bed or need long-lasting hydration throughout the day. But I've found myself scraping the sides, trying to get the last dregs of the product which seems to have finally run out.
After frantically browsing a Boots store in an attempt to find a top-up, I came across a lip balm that looked incredibly similar. It was none other than Boots' Berry Lip Sleep Mask.
At just £4.50, it felt wrong not to buy it and put it to the test to find out whether it matched as a cheaper alternative to the viral Laneige version.
Lanegie Lip Sleeping Mask vs Boots Lip Sleep Mask
For those who missed the hype, the Laneige lip masks are available in eight different flavours - Taro Bubble Tea, Matcha Bubble Tea, Peach Iced Tea, Berry (Original), Gummy Bear, Sweet Candy, Vanilla and Grapefruit. They even come in adorable mini sizes for when you're travelling and have to adhere to the often annoying 100ml rule.
It offers an "ultra-nourishing formula that encourages soft, luscious lips" and is crafted with shea butter and hyaluronic acid - making it a popular buy. You can find them in Sephora, Cult Beauty, Space NK, Amazon and Boots.
On the other hand, Boots' Berry Lip Sleep Mask landed in stores back in January, but has since been difficult to find as stocks sell fast. This product also has shea butter, just like Laneige, but also has moisture-rich ingredient coconut oil, for deep hydration.
My review of the Boots Berry Lip Sleep Mask
Although this should be used as a sleep lip mask, I wanted to see how my lips would fare throughout the day, so used the Boots Berry Lip Mask first thing in the morning and hoped that it would keep my lips nourished during my busy work day. I used the mini spatula provided to take a scoop of the product and applied to my lips, immediately realising that a little bit goes a long way.
I rubbed my lips together and loved how easily it melted into my lips, however, after smacking them together, I felt quite a bit of stickiness which particularly irked me. But once I removed the excess product, this went away and I was left with glossy, moisturised lips. I only reapplied lip balm later than afternoon, so can confidently say this product lasted a good six hours before reapplications. A huge win in my books.
Pros and cons of the Boots Berry Lip Sleep Mask
Pros
Affordable at only £4.50 a pop
Has a stronger berry scent in comparison to Lanegie's version
A little bit goes a long way
Comes with a mini spatula to apply the product
Cons
Does leave a sticky residue, even when rubbed into lips
Berry scent can be overpowering

GP shares the £10 Boots item that can 'eliminate' summer chafing

Shoppers said they experienced 'no chafing at all' once using this 'liberating' roll-on product With a heatwave baking parts of the UK this weekend, Brits may be experiencing some uncomfortable feelings down below when sweaty skin rubs against clothes. This can lead to painful problems, especially for those with sensitive skin. Dr Raj Arora, an NHS GP with expertise in women's health, shared an Instagram video with a product that hundreds of women "swear by" during the hot summer months. She said: "Chafing is really common, especially in the summer when you're wearing shorts and your thighs are rubbing. There's no shame in it; it happens to all of us." "You can get this called Megababe. This contains aloe vera, vitamin E. It hydrates the skin, comes in a roll-on. Just pop it in your bag and reapply." The Thigh Rescue product is available in Boots stores and, at the time of writing, the 60ml pack (normally £12) is discounted to £9.60 in a 20% off sale. There are similar products available elsewhere such as Lanacane Anti-Chafing Gel (£7.99 at Superdrug) and KKwoter's Anti Chafe Stick (£5.99 from Amazon). But, the anti-friction stick by Megababe has lots of glowing reviews as well from over 1,550 customers. One said: "I wish I'd found it years ago as it is amazing. Used it on holiday and got no chafing at all!" Another added: "Glides on easily with no visible residue and no scent. I could have reapplied but didn't need to. I will keep this for future sweaty walks or any other needs!" Someone else shared how the product has "changed my life." They wrote: "The first time I used this, I was anxious because I didn't see how it could work for me when nothing else had. I did 10,000+ steps that day and didn't have to reapply - I was amazed. "I now use it as religiously as deodorant. It's liberating to not have to wear shorts under every outfit after wearing them for years. It's silly but I always felt the shorts were something I had to wear as a fat person and I just wished I could go outside without them, and now I can!" And, one more commented: "This is seriously the best product, it keeps my skin healthy and protected from chafe and rash. I recommend this to friends all the time!" A few people had issues, as one reported: "The formula doesn't seem to take into account sweat and high temperatures, only friction. It wears off after 15 minutes." Another claimed it "did not work at all." The NHS recommends consulting a doctor if you experience persistent, recurrent, or severe symptoms of chafing. They may recommend further tests or treatments, including topical corticosteroids or antibiotics

Morrisons & Ultrasun sun cream warning as safety test failed

Ultrasun Family SPF30, which costs £28 for 150ml and is marketed as being 'perfect for the whole family' and 'especially suitable for children and those with sensitive skin', failed to meet minimum sun cream UVA protection levels in two separate tests by Which?. Morrisons Moisturising Sun Spray SPF30 also failed to meet minimum SPF protection levels in two tests. (Image: Which? PA Wire) Ultrasun passed the UVB SPF part of the test but failed on UVA testing, scoring 9.1 and then 9.5 in a retest. Which? required a score of 10 or more for a pass. Morrisons Moisturising Sun Spray product passed UVA tests but failed the UVB/SPF tests with scores of 25.7 and then 20.7 – short of the 30 or more needed to pass. Which? tested 15 popular sun creams this year, including Boots, Garnier and Nivea as well as supermarket own-brand products. Aldi's Lacura Sensitive Sun Lotion SPF50+, which costs £2.99 for 200ml, was found to protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Cien Sun Spray 30 SPF High (£3.79/200ml), from fellow discounter Lidl, also passed all SPF and UVA testing, with Which? describing it as a 'solid option for affordable and reliable sun protection'. Some 11 other products, including Boots Soltan Protect & Moisturise Suncare Spray SPF30 (£5.50 for 200ml), Nivea Sun Protect & Moisture Lotion SPF30 (£7.90 for 200ml) and Sainsbury's Sun Protect Moisturising Lotion SPF30 (£5.50 for 200ml) passed SPF and UVA safety tests. Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services, said: 'It's really concerning that widely available sunscreens could be putting families at risk by failing to offer the level of sun protection claimed on the packaging. 'While shoppers should avoid buying our 'don't buys', our results prove that there's no need to splash out to keep you and your loved ones safe in the sun as we've found cheap reliable options at Aldi and Lidl.' A spokeswoman for Ultrasun said: 'Ultrasun is fully confident in our testing protocols. As an independent brand delivering very high UVB and UVA protection options for over 30 years, our detailed testing processes, independent and peer reviewed, continue to not only meet but surpass industry standards. 'Our chosen testing protocol is one of the strictest available. Further detail and clarification from Which? on their testing protocols would also be helpful, particularly on how these resulted in two different results from the same sample.' Morrisons told Which? that it was looking closely at the data and working with its supplier to carry out additional independent testing. Recommended reading: What are UVA and UVB rays, and what does SPF mean? UVA and UVB rays both cause different types of damage, and not all sun creams protect against them in the same way. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB to cause long-term damage, including all types of skin cancer, and play a role in the ageing process, such as causing wrinkles, sun spots and leathery skin. UVB rays are mostly responsible for sunburn and skin reddening. They do not penetrate as deeply as UVA rays but they are just as damaging, and can play a large part in the development of skin cancers including melanoma. SPF stands for 'sun protection factor', and indicates the level of protection a sun cream provides against burning rays. SPFs range from 2 to 50+, with 50+ offering the most protection against UVB.
