Foreign Ministry finalises repatriation, Malaysians to leave Iran on Friday

KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Ministry is finalising its efforts to repatriate Malaysian citizens and their family members from Iran amid the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict.
The ministry, in a Facebook post, said those who have agreed to join the repatriation process are expected to leave Tehran on Friday.
The ministry is also working in close coordination with relevant missions to ensure a quick, smooth and safe journey for all involved.
On Wednesday, Communications Minister and MADANI government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Malaysia would evacuate its citizens from Iran on Friday in light of the heightened security risks following an escalation of conflict between Israel and Iran.

The two individuals involved, Mohammed Farik Amin, 49, and Mohammed Nazir Lep, 48, are currently undergoing a comprehensive rehabilitation process that includes social support services, welfare assistance, and health screening before being reunited with their families. Saifuddin said it was crucial for the country to have a capable IGP, such as the 14th IGP Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, who played a key role in the repatriation of the two men. He praised Razarudin's composure when engaging with various US agencies, including the CIA and FBI, in resolving the matter. Meanwhile, Saifuddin stressed that the appointment of an IGP was not an award but a responsibility and burden that must be shouldered with full accountability.

KUALA LUMPUR: Efforts to evacuate Malaysians in Iran amid the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict are being finalised. Wisma Putra, in a statement, said Malaysians who agreed to join the evacuation process will be leaving Teheran today. "The ministry is in close coordination with all relevant missions to ensure a quick, smooth and safe journey of all citizens and their family members to Malaysia. "We look forward to welcoming you home soon," the statement read. On Wednesday, unity government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzi said Malaysians currently in Iran were expected to be evacuated by today following recent air attacks on the country by Israel. Fahmi said necessary arrangements had been made in light of the heightened tensions in the region and that visa preparations for all affected Malaysians had been finalised. Wisma Putra previously urged all Malaysians in Iran to leave the country by any available means, citing the rapidly deteriorating conditions. The ministry said the situation remained highly volatile and could worsen without warning.

KUALA LUMPUR: Newly appointed Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail vowed to place emphasis on the use of artificial intelligence to enhance the capabilities of the police. "In order to carry out policing in the near future, the use of artificial intelligence is an issue that I feel will need to be focused on. "This is to ensure that the police continue to evolve and advance forward," he told reporters at the Police Training Centre here after his handing-over of duties ceremony today. He said AI could help police resolve security problems that arise, whether they are regular crime or national threats. "With this opportunity, I will lead the police to greater achievements in line with modernisation, especially in the use of the latest technology. "The best way for me to reveal the rest of my plans is through a press conference in a few days' time," he said. Khalid said he would continue the various efforts implemented by his predecessors. "I believe this is an opportunity for me to increase the efforts and credibility of the police in handling crime, including cross-border crimes," he said. Khalid took over as the inspector-general of police from Tan Sri Razarudin Husain today. Khalid was born on April 8, 1965, in Manong, Perak, and he joined the police in 1987. He has held various notable posts throughout his career, including from 2014 to 2018, where he served as the police attaché at the Malaysian Embassy in London before returning to Malaysia to helm the Special Branch in Pahang. He was promoted in 2023 to Bukit Aman as the Special Branch director, where he continued to serve until he was promoted to the top post in the force.
