Crackdown on online sale of banned products
PETALING JAYA: The government is ramping up efforts to crack down on the online sale of banned products, including vape liquids laced with narcotics, with a high-level meeting set to take place soon, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Speaking at a weekly media conference yesterday, he said the meeting, involving the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, Health and Communications ministries, reflects growing concern over illegal products being openly sold online without adequate control. 'Following the meeting, we will present the outcomes to the Cabinet, which will be followed by appropriate action, either against the sellers or the platforms enabling such sales.' On updates to the Online Safety Bill, Fahmi said the next step is for the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to finalise a draft of the regulations that would be enforced under the Bill. 'Once that is done, a regulatory committee will be established by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), who will have oversight powers over the Bill's implementation. This process is expected to take place in the coming weeks.' Fahmi said there are no major updates regarding the Sales and Service Tax (SST), but the second finance minister is expected to provide further clarification soon. He said the government takes public feedback seriously, and that revenue from the expanded SST would be used to fund schools, hospitals and other public projects. 'With stronger efforts to curb leakage and corruption, we believe SST collections would benefit more Malaysians.' Fahmi said ministers were briefed on the draft of the 13th Malaysia Plan by Economy Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Nor Azmie Diron. The plan is expected to be tabled in Parliament during the session beginning July 21, and presented on July 28. Amid escalating regional tensions involving Iran, Fahmi said the Foreign Ministry has made arrangements for registered Malaysians, including those working, studying or representing agencies to depart Iran, with visa preparations completed. He said their departure is expected by June 20.

Malaysians to leave Iran by Friday
Evacuation order given as tension between Israel and Iran escalates PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian citizens who are in Iran will be evacuated on Friday, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil ( pic ). He said Malaysian students, tourists and embassy personnel will be assisted to leave the country. Fahmi, who is the government's spokesman, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had informed the Cabinet that only a small number of Malaysians are currently in Iran. 'They have been advised to leave the country. 'Visa arrangements have been finalised and they will begin departing within the next day or two, most likely by June 20,' he said yesterday. Asked whether evacuation units would be deployed, Fahmi said preparations had been made but for security reasons, specific details could not be disclosed. On June 13, Israel launched a series of strikes on Iranian territory, reportedly killing several high-ranking military officials and scientists. In retaliation, Iran fired ballistic missiles at several locations in Israel, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries. Wisma Putra confirmed that no Malaysians in Iran have been reported affected by the attacks. However, the Foreign Ministry has strongly urged Malaysians in Iran to leave immediately amid the heightened security situation following Israel's aggression against Iran. 'Given the rapidly deteriorating conditions, all Malaysians are strongly urged to leave the country immediately by any available means,' the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday. 13MP to be tabled in Parliament on July 28
PUTRAJAYA: The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) is expected to be tabled in Parliament on July 28, says government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said at the Cabinet meeting yesterday, Economy Ministry secretary-general Datuk Nor Azmie Diron presented a briefing summary on the Plan's implementation. Fahmi said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had requested all ministries to review the draft presented and provide feedback to the ministry before it is finalised for tabling in Parliament. 'This will be the first Malaysia Plan to be tabled by the Prime Minister,' he said at his weekly press conference yesterday. On Tuesday, Anwar had said that the Plan would mark a turning point in the government's efforts to address national economic challenges, including development and income gaps, limited fiscal space, and the slow pace of structural economic transition. The 13MP, which covers 2026-2030 is one of the government's key policy documents for implementing its economic agenda. On another matter, Fahmi said enforcement measures to curb the online sale of prohibited items, including drug-laced vape products, will soon be laid out. He said a meeting will be held with Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad to discuss enforcement measures on banned products. This includes the sale of liquids believed to contain banned drugs through apps, social media platforms and online in general. Fahmi said the move reflects the government's commitment to tackling the widespread availability of such products online. 'The outcome of the meeting will be presented to the Cabinet, followed by enforcement action against individual sellers or platforms that enable such sales.' Fahmi also said the Online Safety Act 2024 is expected to be enforced soon after several key processes related to the legislation are finalised, adding he is currently awaiting the draft of the Act. 'Once it is ready and I sign the gazette to enforce the Act, it will come into effect,' he said. Fahmi said a committee will also be set up by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, to oversee the implementation of the Act. 'This committee will have regulatory powers over the enforcement of the Act, such as defining what constitutes online harms,' he explained.

All Malaysians Registered With Malaysian Embassy In Tehran Are Safe
WORLD PUTRAJAYA, June 18 (Bernama) -- All Malaysians in Iran registered with the Embassy in Tehran are safe and accounted for, based on the latest information, the Foreign Ministry said. 'The ministry wishes to reassure the public that the safety and well-being of Malaysians abroad remain our utmost priority,' a spokesperson from the ministry said in a statement to the media on Wednesday. According to the spokesperson, the ministry, through the Embassy of Malaysia in Tehran, continues to monitor the evolving situation closely and stands ready to extend the necessary consular assistance. 'We remain in close coordination with all relevant agencies, both domestic and international, to ensure that appropriate support is provided to Malaysians in Iran, including facilitating their safe return, if required,' the spokesperson added. The spokesperson said, in light of the heightened risks, the ministry has activated its operations room effective June 17.
