Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Hotel, Resort & Restaurant Employees Union (SHRREU) hailed the official working visit by Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong as a historic moment for workers in the State. SHRREU Secretary-General Mohd Shahbudin Abdullah said this marks the first time a Federal Human Resources Minister visited SHRREU's office, a gesture the union described as meaningful and long overdue. 'For decades, no minister has come down to meet with workers in Sabah. Steven's visit shows real commitment to hearing our voices,' he said, recently. During the visit, the union thanked the Minister for delivering on a key promise, the enforcement of the Sabah Labour Ordinance (Amendment) 2025, which was gazetted on May 1 after years of delay. He also emphasised that the amendment brings much-needed updates to labour protections in Sabah, aligning them more closely with standards in Peninsular Malaysia. 'We waited since 2022 for this amendment. Thanks to the Minister's strong leadership, it's now a reality,' Shahbudin said. SHRREU also welcomed the introduction of the Madani's Card Worker, a discount card for union members that offers savings of up to 30 per cent to help with the cost of living. The union urged the ministry to include more Sabah-based vendors to ensure workers in the State can benefit fully. 'We appreciate the initiative, but hope more local partners can be added so Sabah workers aren't left behind,' he said. The union also raised concerns over salary disparities, noting that long-serving workers often receive the same pay as new hires — an issue that has created long-standing dissatisfaction. They urged the ministry to review the policy and offer fairer wage structures. Additionally, SHRREU expressed gratitude for being appointed to the Sabah Labour Advisory Council (SLAC), describing it as a meaningful recognition of the union's role in representing workers' interests. 'This conflict isn't just about foreign politics. It has direct implications on global oil prices, currency exchange rates, supply chains, and shipping costs. Malaysian entrepreneurs, especially in Sabah, where many rely on imports and exports, must be better prepared,' he said when commenting on the matter. He urged entrepreneurs to re-evaluate their strategies, including aspects of geopolitical risk management, market diversification, and building business resilience against global uncertainties. 'Smart entrepreneurs don't rely on a single market source or trade route. In an increasingly unpredictable world, we must have contingency and alternative plans, including strengthening regional markets such as Asean,' he added. According to Nordin, the government should also take a more proactive role in providing up-to-date information, financial support, and technical assistance to affected industry players. A comprehensive framework should be established to ensure the nation's economy can withstand unexpected global shocks,' he said. He also stressed the importance of reinforcing economic cooperation among Asean nations so the region is less exposed to turbulence in the Middle East or among global powers. 'We can't face global challenges like this in isolation. Asean must act as a united economic bloc with mutual support,' he said. He further noted that such threats should also be seen as an opportunity to accelerate domestic economic empowerment and reduce reliance on external markets. 'Crises often open doors for reform. Ringgit higher at opening amid ongoing geopolitical tensions

Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar and a basket of major currencies on Monday despite a strong US Dollar Index (DXY) as ongoing geopolitical tensions, with the United States' (US) involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict, in focus, said an analyst. At 8 am, the local note rose to 4.2420/2655 against the greenback from Friday's close of 4.2505/2565. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said there are fears of a wider conflagration in the region as the US announced 'successful' airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. 'The focus is clearly on how it might impact crude oil prices and risk sentiment. 'Brent Crude oil prices rallied by 2.49 per cent to US$78.93 per barrel, the highest since January 2025 with concerns over Iranian retaliation and (the possibility that it) might use the Straits of Hormuz choke point as leverage in the prevailing conflict,' he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam also said the ringgit could depreciate against the US dollar due to the defensive mode among traders. Advertisement He said there could be a risk-off mode in the currency market,as the US DXY has risen to 98.937 points, while precious commodities, such as spot gold, were up by 0.27 per cent to US$3,377.42 per ounce. At the opening, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It trended higher against the Japanese yen at 2.9023/9186 from 2.9245/9289 at Friday's close, rose versus the British pound to 5.7000/7316 from 5.7356/7437, and inched up against the euro to 4.8800/9070 from 4.9000/9069 previously. The local note also traded firmer against its ASEAN counterparts.
