Terror as car ploughs into shopping centre
A stolen vehicle has driven through a Melbourne shopping centre as it tried avoid police.
Ambulance and police are on the scene at the Northland Shopping Centre on Murray Road, Preston after the terrifying incident at 4pm on Wednesday.
A woman named Tanya said she had been locked down in a Kmart on Wednesday afternoon.
'It sounded like gunshots, but it was a car,' she said.
'Some girls (in the store) saw it and they put the gates down straight away.'
Tanya told 3AW Drive up to 70 people were barricaded into the store with her.
Victoria Police said in a statement they attempted to block in the white LandCruiser, outside the shopping centre.
'The LandCruiser, with one male occupant on board, has taken evasive action to avoid the police and driven through the middle of the shopping centre,' police said in a statement.
'Thankfully, no one was struck by the car and there are no reported injuries.'
9News reported shoppers described 'hearing screams' as the vehicle drove 'at speed' through the shopping centre.
The centre was evacuated and all shops were closed.
One woman is being treated at the scene for shock, and no injuries have been reported at this stage.
The vehicle left the shopping centre and was last seen travelling towards Wood Street, and currently remains outstanding.
The incident marks the second time in nearly a month that Northland Shopping Centre has been forced into lockdown.
Last month, a brawl involving the use of machetes resulted in the evacuation of the shopping centre and the passing of a sweeping anti-machete ban by the Victorian government.

More trouble for state's forensic service
Queensland's top forensic scientist Linzi Wilson-Wilde has been immediately suspended over fears DNA tests have been contaminated. Attorney-General Deb Frecklington issued a statement late on Friday following advice she received that Forensic Science Queensland had paused testing after contamination issues were identified. 'I moved to immediately suspend, pending a show cause notice for removal, the Director of Forensic Science Queensland,' Ms Frecklington said in a statement. The organisation supports criminal and coronial investigations with forensic biology and chemistry services. Ms Frecklington said the forensic lab would pause operations for seven days, then carry out a review to determine the next steps. She said the government has been advised Forensic Science Queensland would still process urgent matters using appropriate controls. More to come.

Lab boss suspended in latest DNA contamination scandal
The director of a state-run forensic testing lab has been suspended and will be asked to explain why they should not be removed in the latest scandal over botched DNA sampling. It follows a pause in testing sparked by the identification of contamination issues at Forensic Science Queensland, Attorney-General Deb Frecklington said on Friday. "This action was taken following advice I received today that (Forensic Science Queensland) was placing a general pause on routine DNA testing after contamination issues were identified," she said. The pause will be reviewed after seven days as the lab determines next steps. Urgent matters will progress in a limited capacity with appropriate controls, Ms Frecklington said. Forensic Science Queensland was established in 2023 following multiple inquiries, one of which revealed a "fundamentally flawed" automated DNA extraction method might have led to offenders potentially escaping conviction for nine years from 2007. Many samples went untested while others were incorrectly ruled insufficient, an earlier inquiry found. The inquiries also elicited characterisations of a "toxic" culture at the state-run forensic lab. More than 40,000 samples fell within the scope of a historical review process, of which close to 10,000 had been reviewed as of May. Linzi Wilson-Wilde was appointed director in September after serving as interim chief executive. Dr Wilson-Wilde was stepping into "what will undoubtedly be a very challenging role", Ms Frecklington said at the time. Following news of the testing pause, Ms Frecklington moved to immediately suspend her, pending a show cause notice for removal. "I want to assure Queenslanders the Crisafulli government remains firmly committed to fixing the long-standing issues at Forensic Science Queensland," she said.

Tradies forced to make $100,000 clean-up after selfish act at national park
'Disgusted' is how rangers are feeling after they discovered 200 tyres illegally tossed into an Aussie national park. On Friday, Queensland's environment department (DETSI) announced it had launched a joint investigation with council to find those responsible. The dumping ground was discovered inside a deep ravine in the Isla Gorge National Park, around 340km west of Bundaberg, creating a massive challenge for workers. The region is home to rare plants and animals, and is known for its gorges, sandstone outcrops and rock formations. Taking a single car tyre to the tip costs from $14, and so the culprits saved roughly $2,800 by dumping them. But their selfish act will impact taxpayers across the state, as the removal of the tyres took two days and required tradies with specialised skills. Authorities were forced to bring in a 130-tonne crane to remove the tyres for recycling. It's believed that hiring equipment of that size costs in excess of $100,000. Banana Shire Council Mayor Nev Ferrie called the act 'disgraceful'. Speaking with Yahoo News he said hauling the tyres out of the national park had delayed other essential work in the park. 'It's bloody terrible stuff. Someone would have got paid to pick those tyres up, and then they've come along and thrown them away where no one can see them,' he said. A senior ranger with DETSI said the dumping would have also polluted a sensitive environment, and put the park at an increased risk of fire. 'This shocking example of illegal dumping has delayed our planned burn program, and we are doing everything we can to remediate the site and find the person or business responsible,' he said. Authorities believe someone in the region knows which business or individual is responsible for the problem. 🚘 Hundreds of tyres mysteriously stacked up in family's driveway 🚨 Cops make 'extremely dangerous' find on ute tyres 🥶 Tradies unable to work and pipes freeze in icy Aussie town 'People involved in illegally dumping waste can receive hefty fines, and they can be ordered to clean up the mess,' the ranger said. Anyone with information is urged to contact DETSI on 1300 130 372 or the Banana Shire Council on (07) 4992 9500.
