"Today is the fifth anniversary of PM Modi's infamous clean chit to China": Jairam Ramesh
New Delhi [India], June 19 (ANI): Congress General Secretary in charge of Communications Jairam Ramesh on Thursday said the withdrawal agreement with China in 2024 resulted in a 'tremendous territorial setback to India' and slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'infamous clean chit to China.' He also called for a national consensus on the security and economic challenges posed by China.
'Today is the fifth anniversary of PM Modi's infamous clean chit to China, when he said 'Na koi hamari seema mein ghus aaya hai, na hi koi ghusa hua hai' (No one has entered our border, nor is anyone inside), only four days after 20 of our brave soldiers gave their lives for the nation in Galwan on 15 June 2020,' Ramesh said in a post on X.
He said that this 'sorry episode' concluded with a withdrawal agreement on 21 October 2024 under which Indian patrols require Chinese concurrence to reach their patrolling points in Depsang, Demchok, and Chumar.
''Buffer zones in Galwan, Hot Spring, and Pangong Tso lie predominantly within the Indian claim line and seemingly permanently prevent our troops from accessing points to which they had unrestricted access before April 2020. This is nowhere close to the status quo as demanded by our Armed Forces and represents a tremendous territorial setback to India,' he said.
The Congress leader pointed out that imports from China are booming, especially electronics, electric batteries, and solar cells. Important sectors like telecom, pharmaceuticals, and electronics are critically dependent on Chinese imports, he said.
'The trade deficit with China has reached a record $99.2 billion in 2024-25. Meanwhile, exports to China are lower today than they were in 2013-14 despite a much weaker rupee, which should, in theory, have made exports more competitive. This surrender to Chinese economic might is the result of the External Affairs Minister's similarly infamous statement when he said: 'Look, they are the bigger economy. What am I going to do? As a smaller economy, am I going to pick up a fight with the bigger economy?' he said.
He said that it is now increasingly clear that China played a pivotally embedded role in Pakistan's military operations during Operation Sindoor. This support went deeper than the supply of weapon systems such as the J-10C fighter and PL-15E air-to-air missile.
'It encompasses the domains of AI, multi-domain operations and stealth, with Pakistan likely to get up to 40 J-35 stealth fighters from China in the near future. The challenge of a single front encompassing our northern and western borders appears to be a reality today,' he said.
He said that the Congress had been calling for a detailed debate on China for the past five years.
'That has not happened. We hope that the Prime Minister will finally agree to such a discussion in the forthcoming Parliament session. It is important to collectively work towards a national consensus on these vital national security and economic challenges posed by China's emergence as the world's dominant manufacturing power and as the world's second-largest economy, which may well overtake that of the USA in a decade,' he said. Bullets, gunpowder gutted as fire hits Verna ammo company
Vasco: Bullets and gunpowder were gutted in a major fire that broke out at Hughes Precision Manufacturing Pvt Ltd, at IDC Verna early on Saturday. Verna fire station in charge Dilesh Gaonkar told TOI that the fire broke out around 4am, and the firefighters received a call from the headquarters about the accident around 4.10am. 'Live and spent bullets and gunpowder stored in one room of the company were destroyed by the flames,' Gaonkar said. 'Boxes containing ammunition turned to ashes, but luckily no casualties were reported.' He said that fire tenders were pressed into service from Verna, Vasco, Margao, and Panjim. 'According to the company's officials, CCTV cameras captured smoke coming out of the storage room,' Gaonkar said. 'The preliminary probe has suggested that a short circuit could be the reason for the massive fire.' Gaonkar said that the Verna fire station has asked the company to provide details on the materials gutted and the loss incurred in the fire. Sources said the loss could run into crores. The company supplies ammunition to the Indian defence forces. The fire tenders were deployed at the company site till late on Saturday. 'Although we succeeded in extinguishing the flames, we are monitoring the site,' Gaonkar said.

Announcement on defence equipment factory in Salem soon, says union minister H D Kumaraswamy
Salem: Union steel and heavy industries minister H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday said an announcement regarding the establishment of a defence equipment manufacturing factory on the premises of Salem Steel Plant would be made soon. "The proposal is currently in the early stages of discussion. A formal announcement in this regard will be made in the next four to five months," he said after attending the International Yoga Day celebrations at the Salem Steel Plant, where he did various yoga asanas along with the plant officials, members of trade unions and employees. Addressing the media, he commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting yoga across the globe and inspiring people. He said efforts were on to revitalize the Salem Steel Plant on the technical and marketing fronts. "In the 2003-2004 financial year, the plant was profitable. However, the profitability has since declined. The primary goal is to redevelop the plant and restore its profitability by developing various new products." Referring to the one nation, one election policy, Kumaraswamy said the BJP was not fostering division, but promoting unity within the country. "The BJP's goal is to strengthen its presence in Tamil Nadu, and the party is actively working to achieve this goal. Hence, some regional parties are criticizing the BJP." On Friday, the Union minister had planted a sapling on the Salem Steel Plant premises and toured the entire facility. He had also met the representatives of labour unions and promised to address their concerns.

I-T raid unearths gold smuggling and hawala transactions
Kozhikode: The Income Tax (I-T) department conducted searches at multiple premises of Seashell Savoury Group and Pulikkal Group in Kozhikode on Saturday allegedly revealing hawala transactions, reverse hawala, gold smuggling, unreported foreign investments, underreported land purchases in cash and other undisclosed financial activities. The I-T department said that the findings at multiple locations point to large-scale tax evasion and concealment of income and assets both in India and abroad. Search was conducted at the residential and business premises of Abdu Razakh Pulikkal, Rasheed Ali Pulikkal, Ahammed Kabeer Pulikkal. Details of foreign dividends received over the years were unearthed in the raid. "Clear evidence of the use of hawala channels to send money amassed abroad to India was uncovered. Undisclosed investments in several buildings, land, and illegal quarries/crushers were found," it said. Sales suppression over the years was quantified from the offices of Delicia Group. "Details of income from GCC region transferred to Indonesia for purchases were also uncovered," it said. Searches were also conducted at the residential premises of Hameed Narikolil, Kunhimoosa and their business premises. It says that the group has revenue from hotel businesses both in India and abroad. It operates more than 80 hotels in the GCC region, owned and managed by Indian residents but not disclosed for taxation in India.
