Sharmishta Panoli Row: Why Bengal Polices Action Reflects Selective Targeting

India.com02-06-2025

West Bengal Police are facing severe criticism for alleged double standards in their handling of recent cases, drawing parallels to concerns about selective enforcement seen elsewhere. Critics point to two contrasting incidents: the alleged inaction in a case involving an attack on Hindus in Siliguri and the swift arrest of a student, Sharmistha, for offensive remarks against a specific religion.
In Siliguri, despite attacks on Hindus, police are accused of being inactive, with perpetrators reportedly roaming free. Conversely, the Kolkata Police arrested 22-year-old Sharmistha from Gurugram, 1500 kilometers away, for allegedly making objectionable comments about a particular religion.

The controversy extends beyond the police to the complainant against Sharmistha, Wajahat Khan. Allegations have surfaced regarding Khan's own track record of offensive social media posts concerning Hindu deities, which police have seemingly ignored. Furthermore, Khan is reportedly linked to the "Sky Foundation," an NGO with alleged connections to Pakistan and an office in Karachi.
While Sharmistha remains in judicial custody for 14 days, Wajahat Khan, despite his alleged derogatory comments, remains free. This has led to accusations that West Bengal Police are acting based on religious bias.
The Bar Council of India has also questioned the "selective pattern" of the police and the Mamata Banerjee government. Concerns have also been raised about the appointment of Inspector Naushad Akhtar as the investigating officer in Sharmistha's case.
Political reactions, including a shared old video of Mamata Banerjee by Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, further fuel accusations of appeasement politics.

Drop attempt to murder charge: Himachal leader of Opposition

Jun 22, 2025 08:44 AM IST Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Jai Ram Thakur on Saturday demanded the state government to immediately drop the attempt to murder charges that has been registered against BJP leaders, including state president Rajeev Bindal, and Paonta Sahib MLA Sukh Ram Chaudhary in a case of stone-pelting that took place few days ago. He also demanded stern action against the main culprit of the incident. Himachal leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur (File) While addressing a press conference, Jai Ram said, 'What happened in Paonta Sahib was clearly a matter of Love Jihad and just like many other such instances involving people of Hindu and Muslim community, action was only initiated against Hindus while no action was taken against the Muslims, which clearly reflects the anti-Sanatan mindset of the government.' 'In a complaint filed by an ASI who was injured in the incident, he had mentioned that it were the people of Muslim community who instigated the violence and pelted the stones first,' Jai Ram said. 'While no action was taken against the accused boy, police arrested four individuals,' he added. 'Being a public representative several BJP leaders were also present during the situation, however, they were not present at the site where violence erupted; still they were booked under Section 109 of BNS,' said Jai Ram. 'The FIR is a result of political vendetta and it looks like the state government saw an opportunity to falsely implicate the top leaders of BJP,' he added.

Ravi, following his visit to the venue of the Lord Murugan conference in Madurai on Saturday, said the event on Murugan, a god revered as a cultural identity of the people, should be seen above politics. 'He defines Bharat and Bharitya. I am happy to witness all the six gods in one place,' he said. 'I have been to all six temples of Lord Murugan — a god respected by Hindus all over India and in other countries,' he added. 'Similar to char dham yatra, spread across the country and the char dham yatra at one place in Uttarakhand, all the six Lord Murugan temples in one place is our dream, and one day it will be realised,' Mr. Ravi said.

As Israel-Iran Conflict Rages, Tehran Unleashes Lethal Drone Force Into Combat

In the modern age, wars have multiple dimensions — cyber warfare is one part of it, and drone battles are another. Amid the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, Iranian drones also joined the fight, after previously, mostly Israeli drones were seen carrying out strikes on Iranian targets. In a significant escalation, Iranian drones recently struck the Israeli city of Beit She'an, leaving one building destroyed. In today's DNA, Rahul Sinha, Managing Editor of Zee News, analysed Iran's drone force deployed against Israel: Watch Full DNA Episode Here: #DNAWithRahulSinha | 2000 KM की रेंज वाले ड्रोन का विश्लेषण... क्या ईरान के ड्रोन ने आयरन डोम को हरा दिया? इजरायल के बाद अब ईरान ने दिखाई ड्रोन पावर!#DNA #IranIsraelConflict #IranIsraelWar @RahulSinhaTV — Zee News (@ZeeNews) June 21, 2025 According to reports, Israel's Iron Dome intercepted several incoming drones mid-air, but some successfully reached their targets. Footage released by Iran shows drones taking off from Iranian drone bases at night, heading toward Israel. Iran claimed that the latest strikes involved both missiles and drones. Shahed-136, Arash-2 Drones Deployed Among the drones shown in the footage was the Shahed-136, a drone that was also previously used by Russia against Ukraine. However, Iran unveiled its newest drone, the Arash-2. The Arash-2 drone, also known as Kian-2, made its combat debut in this conflict. How Do Iranian Drones Reach Israel? Tehran and Tel Aviv are about 2,000 km apart, and Israel's Heron TP drones have a range of only 1,000 km. This raises questions about how Israeli drones can strike Iran's capital city. It is believed that Israel may be using American airbases near Iran to launch its drone strikes. Iran, however, cannot do the same. So, how do Iranian drones travel so far? Satellite imagery reveals that Iran's Dezful airport — situated on Iran's western border — is not just a civilian airport but also reportedly a drone base. Located about 1,500 km from Israel, this base allows Iran to launch Arash-2 drone strikes deep into Israeli territory. Arash-2 Drone: Specifications and Capabilities The Arash-2 drone is making its combat debut after being tested in 2019. Measuring 4.5 meters in length and flying at 400 km/h, this drone can carry up to 250 kg of explosives and strike targets up to 2,000 km away, putting cities like Tel Aviv within its range. Turning Point in Drone Warfare In the early days of the war, Iran appeared to be on the back foot as Israeli missiles and drones successfully hit Iranian targets. But with the deployment of its most advanced drone, Iran seems determined to shift the balance of power.
