Eastern half of U.S. braces for more long days of dangerous heat
Cities across the Midwest and eastern U.S. braced Sunday for another day of dangerously hot temperatures as a rare June heat wave continued to grip a portion of the country. The temperature had already reached 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.6 degrees Celsius) in the Chicago area by 7:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Forecasts called for heat indices of between 100 and 105 degrees F (37.7 to 40.5 degrees C). The heat index in Pittsburgh was expected to top 105 degrees F. The temperature in Columbus, Ohio, was 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) at 8:30 a.m. Highs there were expected to reach 97 degrees F (36 degrees C) with a heat index around 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). Sunday marked the second straight day of extreme heat across the Midwest and East Coast. Heat indices on Saturday hit 103 degrees F (39.4 degrees C) in Chicago and 101 degrees F (38.3 degrees C) in Madison, Wisconsin, turning that city's annual naked bike ride into a sticky and sweaty affair. Minneapolis baked under a heat index of 106 degrees F (41.1 degrees C). The heat is expected to persist into the coming week, with the hottest temperatures shifting eastward. New York City is expected to see highs around 95 degrees F (35 degrees C) on Monday and Tuesday. Boston is on track for highs approaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.7 degrees Celsius) on Tuesday, and temperatures in Washington, D.C., were expected to hit 100 degrees F on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Met Office issues weather latest for Liverpool as heatwave comes to an end
Sizzling temperatures have cooled in Liverpool with the recent heatwave coming to a halt. Glorious sunshine basked over the region for much of the past week, with temperatures climbing to around 30C. It was perfect weather for the many outdoor events which took place in the city this week, including the On the Waterfront festival. But the region saw a change in conditions on Saturday (June 21) with spells of rain, amid a UK warning for thunderstorms which saw parts of the country further north badly hit. The Met Office is forecasting much cooler temperatures over the coming days compared to last week. Highs of 20C are forecast in Liverpool today (Sunday June 22) beginning with cloudy skies. The air will feel fresher than of late with a strengthening southwesterly wind. Rain is expected to be at its heaviest at around 4pm. Anyone who has been struggling to sleep in the recent heat will welcome the news of cooler overnight temperatures with lows of 13C expected in the city overnight. The Met Office expects Monday to be mostly dry and cloudy with some sunny intervals. The chance of rain is low. Tuesday and Wednesday will see dark clouds in the sky with a higher chance of rain on the former. Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be sunnier but still cloudy, with temperatures reaching highs of 22C. Extreme Heat Warning goes into effect today, lasts through Wednesday
Our first bout of excessive heat of the summer builds in today as a strong ridge of high pressure aloft in the atmosphere, aka "heat dome," shifts from the Central US to the Eastern US. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos Not only will a hot airmass shift toward our area, but dew points are expected to climb as well into the low to mid 70s. Sunday will feature our first 90-degree day of the year, with plenty of opportunities into the upcoming week as well. Temperatures and heat index for Sunday evening KDKA Weather Center Most models agree that the core of the heat dome will peak in intensity and park directly over the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic states Monday and Tuesday. The saving grace for the Pittsburgh metro and a majority of our region is that our soils are very moist, and the evaporation of this moisture should keep afternoon air temperatures in check, mostly reaching the low to mid-90s. Despite this, it will be VERY humid, and this will lead to heat indices between 100-105F today through Wednesday during the afternoon. Temperatures and heat index for Monday evening KDKA Weather Center Concerning high temperature records, the days Pittsburgh will be closest to record highs will be Monday (95F set in 1894) and Tuesday (96F set in 1882). DuBois, Pa., and Morgantown, West Virginia, which are other sites in our coverage area that keep long-term climate records, may also break record highs from Monday to Wednesday. While we may stay just shy of record highs, record warm low temperatures are very likely to be met in Pittsburgh, along with Morgantown and DuBois. Air temperatures will struggle to drop below 70°F at night, which makes this heat very dangerous for those who don't have air conditioning. Extreme heat is the leading killer of all weather-related hazards, so individuals should take precautions in this upcoming stretch. High temperatures and heat index over the next six days KDKA Weather Center As far as rain chances go for this week, we may see a stray shower or storm pop up in the heat of the day on Tuesday, mainly due to how hot temperatures will be near the ground, accompanied by much moisture. Slightly better chances of showers and storms look plausible on Wednesday and Thursday as the core of the heat ridge breaks down and a weak front moves into the area. Our "low" temperatures will not be that low this week KDKA Weather Center This front does not look as potent as in earlier model runs, so it is possible the stretch of 90-degree weather may continue all the way through the end of the week. Rain chances over the next week KDKA Weather Center A second and stronger cold front may bring a better chance of rain and storms by Saturday into the following Sunday. Any thunderstorms that form, especially during the heat of the day, may carry a localized damaging wind threat. 7-day forecast: June 22, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!
