Aspergillus fumigatus is an airborne fungus whose spores called conidia, are so tiny that one can't help but inhale them without notice. It can be found all around in the environment in soil, plant matter and even indoor household dust.
According to the
, it can grow optimally at 37°C. It thrives in warm, damp environments, even surviving temperatures above 120 degrees Fahrenheit in compost piles.
While in most people their immune system is able to fight off the spores of the fungus in the body, some get infected enough to develop a serious lung infection called aspergillosis, which can lead to organ failure and death.

People with weakened immune systems such as patients with cancer, asthma, or HIV, who have a low white blood cell count or are recovering from a recent influenza infection are at risk.

Scientists have found that the fungus is invading parts of the US with Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Georgia and California experiencing the highest exposure due to hot, humid climates and farming activity.
Additionally, cities like New York, Houston and Los Angeles are also at risk due to dense populations and ageing infrastructure.
Since aspergillosis isn't a reportable disease- meaning its infections, hospitalizations and deaths aren't tracked, it is hard to detect, said officials. About 40,000 cases of infection develop into chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, which is a long-term lung infection.
While invasive aspergillosis is rare, it is far deadlier and can spread from the lungs to the brain, heart and kidneys.

A
published in the Applied and Environmental Microbiology found azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus in farm soils across seven states in the US, with many strains resistant to standard antifungal drugs.
Another
by the University of Manchester found that if fossil fuel use continues at the current level, the fungus could expand by more than 75% by 2100, putting millions of lives at risk in the southern US, where conditions mirror the forecasts.
'This isn't science fiction,' said Dr Vyas, an infectious disease expert at Columbia University to the Daily Mail. 'These infections are real, and we're not ready.'

Doctors advise people with weak immune systems to avoid soil, gardening, and mouldy environments, wear masks in dusty areas and maintain clear air in hospitals and homes. Hospitals in the states have already taken initiatives of mould inspections and antifungal protocols.

As NCDs continue to burden public health, Chandigarh health dept drive aims 100% screening

Under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the mandate is to ensure 100 per cent screening of all 30 years plus population for diseases like diabetes, hypertension, oral, breast and cervical cancers. As early identification and action are vital for prevention, the Health Department of Chandigarh is organising population-based and opportunistic screening for individuals above 30 years of age in the health and wellness centres, and other facilities in Chandigarh, with a major footfall for NCD screening seen at the centres, with free tests, medicines and follow-up. The mass screenings are done as the NCDs are affecting every age group, thereby becoming a major public health concern. 'Apart from NCDs, we also focused on TB and HIV testing. This drive enhanced public awareness and encouraged maximum community outreach, including door-to-door visits of front-line workers to increase coverage,' Dr Suman Singh, director, Health Services, said. The screening target of hypertension and diabetes was 4,51,030, and the screening achievement was 102.76 per cent for hypertension and 102.89 per cent for diabetes. 'As part of the NCD data calculated till now, as many as 49,130 people, which is 10.6 per cent of the target, were diagnosed as hypertensive, and 31,558 or 6.8 per cent were diagnosed diabetic on screening and have been put on treatment,' Singh shared. Diabetes has assumed epidemic proportions, with India now known as the diabetes capital of the world. The risk of diabetes is increasing rapidly, even in young people, with many diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40, Dr Ashu Rastogi, Associate Professor, Department of Endocrinology, PGIMER said. This is unlike Western countries, where diabetes typically manifests after the age of 60. The reasons for this include a genetic predisposition and lifestyle factors like modern-day stress, a sedentary routine, reliance on fast food, and a lack of regular exercise. 'One in every four new diabetes patients is below 40 years of age. Apart from an unhealthy diet, lack of sleep, and inadequate physical activity are also contributing to the high numbers,' Rastogi added. Hypertension (HTN) or high blood pressure, explained Rajesh Vijayvergiya, Department of Cardiology at PGIMER, is a term when the individual's blood pressure is more than 140 mmHg systolic and or more than 90 mmHg diastolic blood pressure. For an adult individual, the blood pressure should be less than 140/90mmHg. 'A high prevalence of HTN in urban populations is because of certain unhealthy lifestyles adopted by urbanites, such as lack of physical activity, obesity, increased salt intake by consuming junk and canned foods, and smoking and alcohol consumption, which increase the prevalence of diabetes and increase stress,' Vijayvergiya highlighted. Most often, HTN does not cause any symptoms and is also known as a silent killer. There are a few symptoms, such as persistent headache, blurring of vision, tiredness, dizziness or spontaneous bleeding from the nose or within the eye, which can suggest underlying high blood pressure. 'Everyone should have his/her blood pressure measured once at the age of 18-20 years, and then to be repeated every 5 years to make an early diagnosis of high blood pressure. Obesity, lack of physical activities/exercise, increased salt and alcohol intake, smoking, high consumption of salt-rich food such as junk and packed foods, pickles, sauces, processed cheese, frozen meals etc, advanced age and genetic susceptibility are a few of the risk factors for HTN,' Vijayvergiya underscored. The expert added that HTN is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks, heart failure, brain strokes, lower limb claudication, loss of vision etc. 'To manage HTN, decrease your body weight to achieve a body mass index (BMI) of less than 25 kg/m2. Good food habits include low salt intake (less than 5 g/day), stop smoking and alcohol consumption; increase intake of fruits, vegetables and pulses; and avoid salt-rich food,' Vijayvergiya recommended.

Waking up all sweaty in the night? Here's what it could mean

Waking up soaked in sweat during the night can be frightening. Don't panic yet, though. While sometimes, if you wake up in this way, it could be because of your room temperature controls or pre-bedtime routine, recurring episodes may be a symptom of an underlying medical condition just awaiting diagnosis. So, what are night sweats, and when should you panic? (source: fortis healthcare, mayo clinic) What are night sweats? Night sweats are instances of intense sweating at night, despite a cold room and proper breathing. They just exceed your normal sweating attacks, usually saturating your clothes and sheets with perspiration. As per doctors, night sweats can be triggered by several factors ranging from mere lifestyle issues to severe medical conditions. What are the possible causes you may ignore? Sleeping environment It's sometimes simply the temperature. Sleeping in a room that is too warm, sleeping under heavy covers, or sleeping in thick pajamas can lead to overheating and night sweats. The switch to lightweight, airy fabrics and the circulation of air will be helpful. Diet and lifestyle Your nighttime routine may be at fault, too. Eating spicy foods, drinking alcohol or caffeine, or exercising within a few hours of bedtime can elevate your core body temperature, stimulating sweat glands even during sleep. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Stress and anxiety Anxiety or stress always overpowers you. It activates the sympathetic nervous system, the same one responsible for "fight or flight" responses. This causes you to sweat even when your body is resting. Medical reasons you should be aware of Hormonal Fluctuations One of the most common causes of night sweats, especially in women, is hormonal change. Women going through perimenopause or menopause will complain of hot flashes and night sweats due to declining estrogen levels. The same symptoms can be caused by low levels of testosterone in men, too. Other hormonal disorders, such as hyperthyroidism, carcinoid syndrome, and hormonal imbalance during pregnancy, can disrupt your body's internal thermostat. Medications Certain drugs are also to blame for night sweats as a side effect. Some of them are: Antidepressants (especially SSRIs) Steroids Medications used in hormone therapy Diabetes medicines like insulin, Painkillers and opioids Even withdrawal from a substance like alcohol or opioids can lead to night sweats. Infections and other diseases Night sweats are also your body's way of alerting you to infections or more serious diseases. For instance: Tuberculosis, HIV infection, and endocarditis (infection of the heart lining) have also been known to cause recurring night sweats. Sleep apnea (Which occurs when breathing stops while sleeping) and GERD (acid reflux disease) might be involved by association as well. Low blood sugar Particularly in patients with diabetes, it can cause hypoglycemic sweating as well. In very rare circumstances, neurological illnesses that impact autonomic body functions can interfere with how your body regulates sweat. Perhaps worst of all, night sweats can also be an early warning sign of some cancers like lymphoma or leukemia, especially if other symptoms like weight loss or extreme tiredness accompany them. When should we be concerned? While one hot night won't raise a red flag, repeated, soaking night sweats should prompt a trip to a physician. You should be especially vigilant if sweating is accompanied by: Fever or chills Unintentional weight loss Recurrent cough or fatigue Swollen lymph nodes or pain These are symptoms of infection, autoimmune disorders, or cancers that require immediate treatment. What can you do? Cool down your environment: Ventilate your bedroom, use cotton bedclothes, and wear light pajamas. Stay away from triggers : Reduce alcohol, caffeine, and hot food, especially at night. Track your symptoms: Record the timing of sweating and other symptoms you notice. Consult a doctor: If lifestyle changes fail or other warning signals appear, don't delay in seeking a doctor's consultation. Night sweats aren't always a cause for alarm. They're often the result of minor lifestyle factors or stress. However, when they become frequent, intense, or are coupled with other symptoms, they may be a signal from your body that something deeper is at play. Paying attention and taking action early can make all the difference. One step to a healthier you—join Times Health+ Yoga and feel the change

Instant coffee consumption can rob you of your eyesight, reveals study

Image credits: Getty Images Fans of instant coffee might have to find a new wakeup call, as according to a new study , the consumption of this coffee can rob one of their precious eyesight. Yes, drinking instant coffee can lead to the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is a common eye condition that worsens the condition of the eyes. According to scientists from the Hubei University of Medicine in China, people at risk of this disease should avoid instant brews. AMD generally first affects people in their 50s. While it doesn't cause total blindness, it makes simple day-to-day activities like reading and recognising faces difficult. The study used genetic data from more than 500,000 people and found a statistically vital link between instant coffee intake and the risk of dry AMD- one of the forms of the sight-robbing disease. "Our results revealed a genetic correlation between instant coffee consumption and dry AMD," wrote Siwei Liu, corresponding author from the Department of Ophthalmology in Shiyan Taihe Hospital at the Hubei University of Medicine. AMD is a common eye disease and "one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness", said researchers. To conduct the study the researchers used data from the UK Biobank that had details on people's coffee consumption-how much they drank in total and whether it was instant, ground or decaffeinated. They also obtained health data, including the diagnoses of AMD. Researchers found a significant overlap between the genetic predisposition to instant coffee intake and the risk of dry AMD, suggesting shared DNA signals between the two traits across the human genome. What is AMD? Image credits: Getty Images According to the National Eye Institute , age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic eye disease that slowly damages the macula- the central part of the retina responsible for clear and sharp vision. It is the leading cause of loss of vision in older adults. AMD is of two types, dry and wet. Most people have dry AMD, also called atrophic AMD. In this, the macula gets thinner with age. However, there is no treatment for dry AMD. Wet AMD, also called neovascular AMD is less common but causes faster vision loss. It occurs at a later stage and it is also possible that a dry AMD turns into a wet AMD. It happens when abnormal blood vessels grow in the back of the eye and damage the macula. However, wet AMD is treatable. People near the age of 50 or those who have a family history of AMD are at risk. There are no particular symptoms of the disease but one can be on the lookout for problems such as blurriness and trouble with vision in the eye. "Epidemiological studies indicate that AMD affects nearly 200 million people worldwide, with the number expected to reach 290 million by 2040," wrote the study authors in Food Science and Nutrition. Essentially, byproducts, additives or chemicals such as acrylamide, oxidised lipids and other compounds found in instant coffee can contribute to dry AMD. Thus, people with early-stage AMD and those with a genetic predisposition to AMD should consider switching to ground beans instead.
