Tiger kills farmer in Pilibhit, 2nd fatal attack in area in 5 days
Pilibhit: A tiger killed a 45-year-old farmer in Pilibhit on Sunday afternoon, the second such fatal attack in the district's
Seramau North
area within five days. Ram Prasad, a resident of Chatipur village, was attacked while he was irrigating his sugarcane field near Haripur Kishanpur village around 4.30pm, causing panic in the nearby villages and fresh resentment towards forest authorities.
Local farmers working in adjacent plots said the animal pounced on him suddenly. By the time they rushed to help, the tiger had already killed him and retreated into the jungle. In protest, villagers staged a demonstration against the forest department and accused officials of indifference and negligence.
On Tuesday, 50-year-old Hansraj from Nazirgang village was mauled to death while irrigating his field around 10pm.
His son and several villagers witnessed the tiger feeding on parts of his body. Both incidents occurred within a 200-metre radius of the Khutar forest range in Shahjahanpur district, which shares a boundary with Pilibhit.
Locals claim that a tigress and a tiger have been roaming the area for nearly a month. Despite alerting the forest department multiple times, villagers said officials took no action to secure the area or warn residents.

Assistant conservator of forest, Shahjahanpur, Sushil Kumar said, "We are trying to pacify the villagers so the body can be sent for autopsy." He added that five field teams had been tracking the tiger's movement since Hansraj's death and that over six camera traps were already installed in the area.
Kumar admitted that the field where Ram Prasad was attacked lay remarkably close to the forest. He said the number of field teams and camera traps would be increased to step up monitoring and combing operations.
However, the forest department is yet to confirm if the same tiger was responsible for both killings. Kumar said the animal involved in Tuesday's attack had not been identified, and investigations were ongoing to determine whether one or more tigers were involved.

CCTV hunt pays off: 4-year-old girl abducted in Delhi traced to Barabanki; rescued from brink of begging racket
NEW DELHI: A four-year-old girl was rescued from her woman kidnapper who allegedly abducted her from central Delhi's Chandni Mahal on June 18 to make her beg and later sell her off, police have said. The woman allegedly took the girl away when the child's mother was out to fetch drinking water. Police have said that they have arrested the 40-year-old woman, Barkha, and she admitted that she had planned to use the child for begging and then sell her once she grew up. After reviewing footage from 100 CCTV cameras, officers traced the girl to the woman's house in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. Although the woman initially escaped, she was caught near Old Delhi Railway Station with the child. Police reported that on June 18, they received a complaint about the girl missing from the Chandni Mahal area. The complainant stated that around 5 pm, while his wife was collecting drinking water at their rented accommodation, their four-year-old daughter left the house with her elder sister and later disappeared. Deputy commissioner of police (central) Nidhin Valsan formed a team under inspector Mahavir Prasad and sub-inspector Akash to catch the suspect and trace the child. "The team conducted an investigation, which involved scrutinising footage from CCTV cameras across the area to identify both the victim and the suspect. From the minute analysis of CCTV footage from various locations, the child was seen alone heading towards Delhi Gate near Sanchar Bhawan. Secret informers were activated for any information," police said. The team got a tip-off that a woman beggar had taken the girl to her village, Behta, in Barabanki. A police team was dispatched to Barabanki. Upon reaching the village, the team learned that Barkha had brought the child there but, learning that the police were looking for her, she returned to Delhi. Based on this intelligence, police were deployed in plain clothes at New Delhi Railway Station and Old Delhi Railway Station. On Saturday morning, Barkha was seen deboarding a train at Old Delhi Railway Station and trying to hide near Shanti Van red light along with the child. She was immediately caught, and the child was safely rescued from her custody. Upon interrogation, she disclosed that she had abducted the girl. The child was reunited with her parents.

MEERUT/BAREILLY: Courts in Meerut and Moradabad sentenced two judo coaches to prison for sexually assaulting minor trainees, including a national-level judoka, in separate incidents that took place in 2017 and 2023. Manish alias Max, 26, received a life sentence for raping a 10-year-old national judo player in Meerut, special public prosecutor Kuldeep Mohan said. The additional district judge Sangeeta, who goes by her first name, also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. Special public prosecutor Avkash Jain told TOI, "The convict violated the girl in the guard room while her brother and fellow players were asked to practise. After the crime, the minor bled profusely, and Max, in a cynical attempt to conceal his crime, staged a drama; he told the minor's parents that she sustained a severe injury during practice." He added, "Believing the convict's theory, the minor was rushed to a medical facility and underwent treatment in three different hospitals, and after eight days, she secretly wrote her ordeal on a paper, which somehow reached her father. Upon this, an FIR was lodged at Kankar Khera police station under relevant sections of IPC and Pocso Act in June 2023." Mohd Qasim took the boy to the forest on the pretext of judo training, where he forcefully sodomised him. The boy narrated his ordeal to his family about the incident upon returning home. Subsequently, an FIR against the convict was registered at Katghar police station under the sections of sodomy and the Pocso Act. " He added, "The submitted medical examination report to the court confirmed the assault. Additionally, the statement of the survivor and the circumstantial evidence helped in nailing the accused." The chargesheet was submitted in court, and the judge expedited the trial. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court found Ali guilty and ordered his immediate custody.
