Thai cabinet approves bid to host Bangkok F1 race

Yahoo4 days ago

Thailand moved a step closer to staging Formula One on the streets of Bangkok when the cabinet Tuesday formally approved a government bid to host a race.
The bid, worth a reported $1.2 billion, would see the Thai capital host races from 2028 to 2032, if it is successful when it is submitted to the sport's governing body.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has held multiple meetings with F1 chief Stefano Domenicali in recent months to push the project forward, including last month in Monaco, home to the sport's most storied street race.
The layout of the potential Bangkok street circuit has not been revealed but government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said it could include an area near Chatuchak market in the north of the city, which is a magnet for tourists every weekend.
The Thai government has touted the idea of a "sustainable" race and said the grand prix could benefit the kingdom to the tune of $600 million.
Most of Formula One's 24-race schedule is confirmed for several years but gaps are set to open up and Domenicali has suggested that Thailand could be a contender to join the circuit.

Formula One currently stages one race in Southeast Asia, in Singapore, which is regarded as one of the toughest races of the season because of the intense heat and humidity.
Thailand's only current Formula One driver is London-born Alex Albon with the Williams team.

Hyundai establishes directly-owned distributor in Malaysia

Hyundai Motor Company announced that it has established a new subsidiary in Malaysia, giving the South Korean brand a direct presence in South-east Asia's second-largest market. The new company, Hyundai Motor Malaysia (HMM) – headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, will effectively take over as Hyundai's distributor in the country from local conglomerate Sime Darby, while continuing to use the company's dealer network. Sime Darby's automotive division, Sime Darby Motors, has vehicle distribution and dealer operations across the Asia-Pacific region, for brands such as BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce, Ford, Land Rover, Porsche, Suzuki and Mitsubishi. It also has a majority-owned contract assembler, Inokom Corporation, located in Malaysia's Kedah State. Hyundai confirmed that the new company will assume full responsibility in Malaysia for the brand's 'marketing, sales and customer experience, with a dedicated local team empowered to make faster, market-relevant decisions and deliver a more connected, customer-first approach. This is underpinned by deeper market commitment, enhanced customer engagement and a renewed focus on innovation and long-term growth.' HMM will allow Hyundai to 'actively expand its dedicated Malaysian team, laying the foundation for a robust nationwide dealer network.' The new company is expected to employ around 100 people by the end of the year. Jeffrey Gan, managing director of Sime Darby Motors, said in a statement: "We are proud to have played a pivotal role in Hyundai's growth in Malaysia. As Hyundai embarks on its next phase, we remain committed to supporting its sales and aftersales operations, ensuring continuity, confidence, and a seamless service experience for existing and future Hyundai customers.' Hyundai's vehicles are currently assembled locally by Inokom, at its facility in Kedah State. The South Korean automaker is currently building a new MYR 2.2 billion (US$ 520 million) vehicle production plant in Kedah in collaboration with Inokom, which is expected to become operational in the third quarter of 2025. Hyundai confirmed that it plans to launch three new SUV and MPV models in Malaysia in the near future. The McLaren Racing Formula One team had Hollywood star Brad Pitt drive the 2023 MCL60 F1 car in a private test with Lando Norris at the Circuit of the Americas. This comes a few days after the premiere of the F1 movie in New York, which stars Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a veteran driver who makes his way back into the sport to mentor a young driver in an underdog team, played by Damson Idris. While early reviews from critics have been released, fans will have to wait until the movie is released on June 25 (June 27 for North America). Co-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Joseph Kosinski, famous for his work on 'Top Gun: Maverick,' a strong emphasis has been placed on ensuring the movie stays true to real-world F1 racing. McLaren confirmed that the private test had taken place, but further details were kept under wraps. McLaren even teased Pitt's track outing on X with the caption, "It's a Sonny day in Austin 👀." Also noteworthy were the letters BP on the race overalls that stand for Brad Pitt. Pitt, who was at F1's premiere at Times Square, told Sky Sports F1 about his soft spot for racing movies. He said: "Can you believe they even let us in? It's insane. "Let us in the world. Let us in race weekends. Let us in to embed ourselves into the season. I've just never heard of anything like it. Especially this sport, it's so revered. It's really special. "We just drew from history. A little this, a little that and that we had Lewis Hamilton keep us straight off and running. Philippine vehicle sales fall 1% in May

New vehicle sales in the Philippines declined by just over 1% to 39,775 units in May 2025 from 40,271 units a year earlier, according to member wholesale data released jointly by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc (CAMPI) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA). This was the second year-on-year decline so far this year, following the market's strong three-year rebound from the pandemic lows. The Philippine economy expanded by 5.4% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025, slightly better than the revised 5.3% growth in the fourth quarter of 2024, underpinned by stronger domestic consumption, export growth and lower interest rates. The central bank cut its benchmark interest rate by a further 25 basis points in its June meeting to 5.25%, down from a peak of 6.5% last year, to support domestic growth. Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation's chief economist, Michael Ricafort, said in a statement: 'Vehicle sales have been weighed down recently by reduced consumer and business sentiment as the trade war is expected to reduce global trade, investments, employment, and the world economy.' In the first five months of 2025, the vehicle market was still up by almost 2% to 190,429 units compared with 187,191 units in the same period last year, driven by a 10% rise in commercial vehicle sales to 151,704 units, while sales of passenger cars fell by over 21% to 38,725 units. Separate industry data showed that sales of electrified vehicles amounted to 10,433 units year-to-date, including 8,536 hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), 1,779 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 118 plug-in hybrids. Not all brands are covered in this data, however, including some key Chinese brands. Last year, the government expanded its EO12 zero-tariff incentive programme, which runs until 2028, from just zero emission vehicles to also include hybrid vehicles. Toyota reported a 6% sales increase to 91,652 units in the five-month period, helped by the recent launch of the new entry-level Hilux Tamaraw; followed by Mitsubishi Motors with 36,613 units (+4%); Nissan 9,879 units (-14%); Suzuki 8,913 units (+12%); and Ford 8,559 units (-30%). CAMPI remains optimistic that the vehicle market will continue to expand this year, to 500,000 units from 467,252 units in 2024. The association's president, Rommel Gutierrez, told reporters: 'We are encouraged by the industry's sustained growth, especially commercial vehicles. With strong momentum heading into the second half of the year, CAMPI remains confident in the automotive industry's positive performance.'
