As the conflict between Iran and Israel enters its eighth consecutive day, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has successfully evacuated a number of its nationals and residents from the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The move comes amid escalating military strikes between the two countries that have heightened concerns over regional stability and civilian safety.
The evacuation operation was carried out in coordination with the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, working closely with the UAE embassies in Iran and Turkmenistan. After leaving Iran, the evacuees spent a night in Turkmenistan, where they were provided with hotel accommodation.
The following day, the group was airlifted to Al Bateen Airport in Abu Dhabi, where special transport was arranged to take them safely back to their homes across the UAE.
The UAE emphasized that this step was taken as part of its responsibility to ensure the safety and security of its citizens and residents abroad. It reiterated its commitment to pursuing diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions and prevent further escalation.

In an official statement, the UAE stressed the importance of "continuous intensive diplomatic communications and consultations with the concerned parties to end the conflict." It further emphasized that diplomacy and dialogue remain "the sole path forward" and called for a "comprehensive approach that ensures stability, justice, and prosperity for the peoples of the region."
The UAE has maintained a neutral stance in the conflict and has called on all parties to exercise restraint.
On Tuesday, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. During the call, Sheikh Mohamed expressed the UAE's "solidarity with Iran and its people" in the wake of Israeli military strikes.
The discussion, as reported by UAE state media WAM, focused on the "serious implications of the escalating conflict on regional peace and security." Both leaders exchanged views on how to contain the crisis and avoid a broader regional confrontation.
The conflict was triggered on June 13, when Israel launched a massive aerial assault on Iran, reportedly killing senior figures in the Iranian military. The attack marked a major escalation in long-standing tensions between the two nations.
According to Israeli military sources, within the first week of the campaign, Israel had struck dozens of strategic targets. These included missile production facilities, military infrastructure in western and central Iran, and even a research institution in Tehran alleged to be involved in nuclear weapons development.
In response, Iran launched a new wave of missile strikes early Friday, targeting the southern Israeli city of Beersheba. The strikes hit areas near residential apartments, office buildings, and industrial zones, raising fears of civilian casualties and further escalation.
The UAE continues to closely monitor developments and has called for an urgent de-escalation of hostilities to avoid wider regional instability.

Chellanam residents intensify protest seeking permanent solution for sea erosion

Kochi: Hundreds of Chellanam residents took out two protest rallies on Friday demanding immediate measures to prevent sea erosion. Expressing solidarity with the people, priests from the Alappuzha and Kochi dioceses held a hunger strike near the Thoppumpady BOT bridge, demanding the construction of a sea wall from Kannamally to Fort Kochi as an immediate solution to the issue. As the monsoon showers intensified, Chellanam experienced the highest ever sea surge in recent years. As more than 500 houses were affected by sea surge, the residents of Kannamaly and Puthanthodu regions of the Chellanam panchayat held a protest on Monday. The protesters also staged a blockade on the Alappuzha-Fort Kochi state highway. The rallies and the hunger strike on Friday were the continuation of these protests under the banner of 'Care Chellanam' collective. The mass rallies that commenced at 3.30pm from Palluruthy and Thoppumpady Santhom Junction concluded at the venue of the hunger strike. While the hunger strike which began at 10am at the BOT Junction was inaugurated by Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council vice-president Joseph Jude, a rally by priests from St Sebastian Church, Thoppumpady, was inaugurated by Kripasanam director Joseph Valiyaveettil. Varapuzha archdiocese auxiliary bishop Rev Antony Valunkal spoke at the event. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The sea wall in the panchayat's coastal areas was damaged in the 2017 cyclone Ockhi, accelerating the sea erosion. Following coastal residents' protests, the govt allocated Rs 340 crore for constructing a 12.5km sea wall from Chellanam fishing harbour towards the north, but only 7.35km was completed. The area from Puthenthode to Fort Kochi is currently experiencing intense sea erosion and construction has been completely halted. "Many homes here are either partially or completely destroyed, making them uninhabitable. We are expecting high waves next week as the sea becomes more powerful with the new moon. If authorities now send back people from relief camps to homes, they will have to return to the camp again next week. Since the temporary sandbags and geo bags were completely destroyed in the recent sea surge, the high waves expected during the new moon will severely affect the area," said general convenor of Chellanam-Kochi People's Forum V T Sebastian. Forum members also demanded that the govt should provide rental houses or pay rent for those living in damaged houses. The rallies were flagged off by KCBC secretary general Rev Thomas Tharayil and Kerala Latin Catholic Association state president Sherry J Thomas. The concluding meeting was inaugurated by Kottapuram diocese bishop Rev Ambrose Puthenveettil.

Technology will gradually take over manual cleaning work: Minister

Mysuru: In the coming years, technology will gradually take over manual cleaning work, much like how wars are now fought with technology, said HC Mahadevappa, minister for social welfare and Mysuru district minister. Addressing a gathering at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) auditorium on Friday, he urged pourakarmikas (civic workers) to ensure their children are well-educated and aim for higher positions in society. The occasion marked the distribution of permanent appointment order letters to pourakarmikas who are now permanent employees. Out of 10,000 pourakarmikas made permanent across Karnataka, 219 belong to the Mysuru City Corporation. Highlighting the transformation, the minister said that these workers, who earlier earned around Rs 17,000 per month, will now receive double the salary along with full govt benefits. "This permanent status will help workers lead a more dignified life and elevate their families socially and economically," he said. Mahadevappa also compared conditions in other states, noting that in Madhya Pradesh, pourakarmikas are paid only Rs 10,000—below minimum wage standards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo He reassured that more regularisation drives would be conducted in Karnataka to benefit more workers. Urging financial prudence, the minister advised pourakarmikas not to waste their increased earnings but instead invest wisely in their families' future. Responding to a request by former mayor Narayan regarding the 88 temporary pourakarmikas who died while on duty, the minister instructed the MCC commissioner to take appropriate steps to support their families. Avinash S, a civic worker, shared his personal experience, expressing gratitude to the govt. "Earlier, I struggled with a meagre salary of Rs 17,000. Now, with a permanent job and better income, I feel motivated and can finally think about marriage and a secure future," he said. Narasimharaja MLA Tanveer Sait, deputy commissioner Lakshikanth Reddy, MCC commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif, former mayor and Pourakarmika leader Narayan, and pourakarmika leader Mara were present.

Modi flags off 100 new electric buses for city

1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: In a move towards a modern, eco-friendly mobility network, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off 100 new electric buses under the Capital Region Urban Transport (Crut). The PM inaugurated the new buses during his visit to the city to mark one-year anniversary of the BJP govt in Odisha. The new additions increased the number of e-buses under Crut in the capital city to about 150. The capital city is steadily improving infrastructure supporting EVs with the introduction of a new public charging station at Vani Vihar Square recently. Besides, the Crut has also been developing exclusive bus depots equipped with EV infrastructure. With the new additions on Friday, Crut is likely to increase the number of routes covering more distant parts of the city as well as Cuttack and Puri. Besides the e-buses, Crut operates about 400 buses which run on conventional fuel. "There is a growing demand for public buses in the city. Looking at the need and demand, we have strengthened our fleet. The new and upcoming addition to the fleet will predominantly be e-buses only," a Crut spokesperson said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He said the additions took the total number of buses under Crut to about 510. "There are 58 routes where Ama buses are plying now. We will be adding a few new routes with the new buses," added the spokesperson. The Ama Bus (earlier called Mo Bus) services have gained immense popularity in quick time. From daily ridership of a few thousand in the initial days, it has gone up to 2.16 lakh in Bhubaneswar alone. Looking at the demand, the state govt increased the fleet with new EV buses as well as routes covering more parts of the city. It also introduced Ama Bus service in Rourkela in 2023. It later expanded the service to cities like Berhampur and Sampalpur.
