Chellanam residents intensify protest seeking permanent solution for sea erosion
Kochi: Hundreds of Chellanam residents took out two protest rallies on Friday demanding immediate measures to prevent sea erosion. Expressing solidarity with the people, priests from the Alappuzha and Kochi dioceses held a hunger strike near the Thoppumpady BOT bridge, demanding the construction of a sea wall from Kannamally to Fort Kochi as an immediate solution to the issue.
As the monsoon showers intensified, Chellanam experienced the highest ever sea surge in recent years. As more than 500 houses were affected by sea surge, the residents of Kannamaly and Puthanthodu regions of the Chellanam panchayat held a protest on Monday. The protesters also staged a blockade on the Alappuzha-Fort Kochi state highway.
The rallies and the hunger strike on Friday were the continuation of these protests under the banner of 'Care Chellanam' collective.
The mass rallies that commenced at 3.30pm from Palluruthy and Thoppumpady Santhom Junction concluded at the venue of the hunger strike. While the hunger strike which began at 10am at the BOT Junction was inaugurated by Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council vice-president Joseph Jude, a rally by priests from St Sebastian Church, Thoppumpady, was inaugurated by Kripasanam director Joseph Valiyaveettil. Varapuzha archdiocese auxiliary bishop Rev Antony Valunkal spoke at the event.

The sea wall in the panchayat's coastal areas was damaged in the 2017 cyclone Ockhi, accelerating the sea erosion. Following coastal residents' protests, the govt allocated Rs 340 crore for constructing a 12.5km sea wall from Chellanam fishing harbour towards the north, but only 7.35km was completed. The area from Puthenthode to Fort Kochi is currently experiencing intense sea erosion and construction has been completely halted.
"Many homes here are either partially or completely destroyed, making them uninhabitable. We are expecting high waves next week as the sea becomes more powerful with the new moon. If authorities now send back people from relief camps to homes, they will have to return to the camp again next week. Since the temporary sandbags and geo bags were completely destroyed in the recent sea surge, the high waves expected during the new moon will severely affect the area," said general convenor of Chellanam-Kochi People's Forum V T Sebastian.
Forum members also demanded that the govt should provide rental houses or pay rent for those living in damaged houses.
The rallies were flagged off by KCBC secretary general Rev Thomas Tharayil and Kerala Latin Catholic Association state president Sherry J Thomas. The concluding meeting was inaugurated by Kottapuram diocese bishop Rev Ambrose Puthenveettil.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, left, and UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres (Image credits: AP, PTI) World leaders reacted swiftly to US strikes on Iran's three nuclear facilities early Sunday, with many urging de-escalation and diplomacy, while some supporting the move. The strikes come amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following recent clashes between Israel and Iran. The US intervention marks a significant turning point, as Washington becomes directly involved in the conflict, despite earlier assurances from US President Donald Trump to steer clear of foreign wars. Iran had previously warned of retaliation if the US entered the fray. In a national address, Trump declared, "Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success,' and called the operation as a decisive step toward global security. Reactions from world leaders continue to emerge as governments assess the broader consequences of the attack. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump's decision, calling the strikes a 'pivot of history.' In a video message on Sunday, Netanyahu said, "Congratulations President Trump. 'You cannot bomb knowledge': How Iran reacted to US strikes on its key nuclear facilities
Fordo enrichment facility in Iran (Image credits: AP) Iran condemned the US strikes on Tehran's nuclear facilities early Sunday, calling it a 'savage assault' and declared it will 'never' halt its nuclear program. The United States had conducted targeted airstrikes on three key Iranian nuclear facilities—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. US president Donald Trump confirmed that B-2 stealth bombers were used in the operation and that a full payload was dropped on Fordow, the primary target. Iran responds with defiance The atomic energy organisation of Iran, which manages the country's nuclear operations, said the facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan were subjected to a 'savage assault' as reported by the state-affiliated IRNA news agency. The agency called the attacks a 'blatant violation of international law,' specifically citing the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), and accused the UN's nuclear watchdog, the international atomic energy agency (IAEA), of being 'complicit.' Mehdi Mohammadi, a senior adviser to Parliament speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf, said the Fordow facility had already been evacuated in anticipation of a strike. 'The site had been evacuated a long time ago and the damages are not irreversible,' he said, adding, 'you cannot bomb knowledge.' According to the White House, Trump had earlier given Iran a two-week deadline to respond to US conditions, but the strikes were launched ahead of schedule. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Morocco (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo In a televised national address after the attack, Trump called the strikes 'a spectacular military success' aimed at neutralizing Iran's nuclear threat. 2013 Government Order on coaching for tribal students never executed: RTI
MADURAI: A response to an RTI query, regarding the state government's efforts to ensure tribal students secure admission to prominent higher educational institutions, has revealed that a G.O. passed in 2013 towards offering special coaching for such schoolchildren was not implemented. Administrative reasons were cited for the same. Responding to an RTI filed by activist S Karthik seeking information on the efforts taken by the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing & Development Corporation (TAHDCO) to get tribal students into some of the top institutions like IIT and NIT for the past 12 years and how many benefited from that, TAHDCO's public information officer (PIO) stated that the state government passed G.O. 76 on October 15, 2013, to provide special coaching to around 50 students at a cost of Rs 2 lakh per ward for two years. Every year the government were to allocate Rs 50 lakh. However, it was not implemented due to administrative reasons, the official added. Karthik told TNIE that, like this G.O, many schemes meant for the welfare of tribals are only on paper. Compared to other community students, tribal students lag behind in education. If this G.O. had been implemented effectively, at least 600 tribal students could have joined IITs and NITs over the past 12 years, he said. He further requested the government to implement the G.O. and also allocate additional funds of Rs 2 crore as well as form a committee led by the collector to monitor the programme. While confirming there being no special scheme that provides coaching to tribal students appearing for JEE, a TAHDCO official on condition of anonymity said the department is imparting state-level skill training for them in order to make them crack competitive exams.
