Milwaukee currently has the second worst air quality in the US, The New York Times says
Milwaukee is again experiencing some of the worst air quality in the U.S. from Canadian wildfire smoke on June 5, according to The New York Times.
The city had the worst air quality in the country around noon EST on June 4, with an air quality index of 153, the Times reported. While Chicago has since topped the Times' list with an AQI of 161, Milwaukee claims the second spot.
As of 11 a.m. EST on June 5, city has an air quality index of 139, the Times reported. Aurora, Colorado is experiencing the same index as Milwaukee.
This AQI is considered "unhealthy for sensitive groups," according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's standards.
For indexes in this range, members of sensitive groups could experience negative health effects. The general population is "less likely" to be affected, according to AirNow.gov.
As a result, an air quality advisory from Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has been extended until noon on June 6, Air Management Outreach Coordinator Craig Czarnecki confirmed to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Czarnecki noted the scope of the advisory will be reduced and include the following counties in the eastern portion of the state: Brown, Door, Kenosha, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette, Milwaukee, Oconto, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha.
The AQI for these areas will range from "moderate" to "unhealthy for sensitive groups," he said, adding air quality throughout "much of the rest of the state" has improved to the "moderate" level.

The DNR has interactive air quality maps, which show the AQI and any active alerts or advisories by county. You can view them on the department's website. You can also type in your ZIP code into the AirNow.gov website.

High humidity levels combined with a ripple in the jet stream will unleash one or more lines of thunderstorms that will progress from the Appalachians and Piedmont areas toward the Atlantic coast from Thursday afternoon to Thursday night. "As the storms approach the airports at the major metro areas from New York City to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., airline delays and ground stops will increase dramatically. Some flights may even be cancelled," AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter stated. "Such delays and cancellations at these major airports have a tendency to spread quickly elsewhere in the United States air system because planes and crews are not where they need to be based on the existing schedule, resulting in cascading delays and cancellations." Motorists should be prepared for high water and sudden poor visibility as the storms approach. Roads that tend to flood during downpours should be avoided. Powerful wind gusts in many of the storms will average 60-70 mph. Due to the saturated ground in some areas, strong wind gusts during storms can easily push over trees or break off rotting limbs, leading to power outages. There will be an elevated risk of tornadoes in an area from upstate New York and northwestern New England to parts of central and eastern Quebec. This includes the major Canadian metro areas of Quebec City and Montreal, as well as Burlington, Vermont Albany, New York Pittsfield, Massachusetts and Lebanon, New Hampshire in the northeastern United States. A small number of the storms can also bring pea- to marble-sized hail, which, when combined with strong winds and torrential downpours, can damage crops in fields, plants in backyard gardens and other vegetation. As the storms creep along, flash flooding along small streams and urban areas can occur. Two or three storms may blast some locations into Thursday evening. Storms in the metro areas of Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia, as well as Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina, may be somewhat more widely separated but can still be severe in some neighborhoods and lead to damage and travel disruptions into Thursday evening. Some thunderstorms and severe weather are also anticipated from South Carolina to Georgia, Florida and Alabama. However, a few storms in these areas can still pack a punch at the local level with brief wind gusts, torrential rain and a sudden cluster of lightning strikes. As a massive dome of heat builds from this weekend to next week, rounds of severe thunderstorms will erupt on the northern edge from the Midwest to parts of the Northeast.

Against the current: DNR Swift Water Rescue units vital during weekend flooding
MORGANTOWN — As flooding surged across parts of West Virginia this past weekend, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources deployed one of its crucial and highly trained emergency tools, the Swift Water Rescue units. Sergeant Dennis Feazell, the DNR's statewide Swift Water Rescue coordinator, said DNR officers conducted 18 rescues on Saturday night in Ohio County, pulling residents from homes and vehicles as water blasted through the Valley Grove and Triadelphia areas. 'Some people were trapped in cars, others were stuck inside their homes,' Feazell said. 'Our local officers responded immediately and did what they had to do to get people out safely.' The rescues were just the start of it. By Monday and Tuesday, floodwaters began to recede, which prompted Feazell and five other highly trained Swift Water instructors to switch from rescue mode to vehicle recovery and damage assessment. They worked alongside local tow operators and cleared 24 flooded vehicles from the waterways — helping to prevent debris from causing additional hazardous conditions for future storms. 'The swift response is the result of years of planning', Feazell said. After the deadly 2016 Greenbrier County floods — which claimed 23 lives — the DNR began to develop a formal statewide swift water rescue program. About two years ago, the agency launched a structured program to ensure every field officer received the appropriate tools and training. Currently, more than 100 DNR officers are trained to respond in all 55 counties. 'What we learned in 2016 is that we needed a more organized, prepared response to flooding,' Feazell said. 'Now, every officer gets annual training, and we have a team of 10 instructors, with advanced training and equipment, who can mobilize quickly to assist in major events.' Feazell noted that roughly 50 percent of flood-related deaths involve vehicles, so the DNR's focus this year is shifting to improve training that involves rescues from submerged or trapped cars. Earlier this year, the department sent instructors to a facility in North Carolina where they trained in rescuing people from submerged vehicles in simulated flood currents. 'That training came into play immediately,' he said. 'We were out there clearing vehicles and checking for victims within hours of arriving.' In addition to rescue operations, DNR officers have also been walking stream banks to search for missing persons and using larger boats on the Ohio River to assist in victim recovery. Feazell emphasized that while DNR officers have always responded to floods, the training program has made a noteworthy difference in both safety and efficiency. 'Our guys have always stepped up in these situations,' he said. 'What this training gives them is a safer, more-effective way to do the job.' With additional rainfall forecasted for parts of the state, DNR teams remain prepared by staying up with the current damage. 'This has been a busy year already,' Feazell said. 'But we are ready — and we will keep showing up when people need us.'

Although it's not overly salty and less processed than salami and many cured meats, it's still moderately high in fat and sodium. It has a decent amount of protein from lean brisket, but its preparation means it's best positioned midway in the list as an occasional protein swap for sandwiches or charcuterie. Per 56 g: Calories: 78 Protein: 10 g Fat: 4 g (Saturated: 2 g) Sodium: 493 mg Carbohydrates: 0.6 g (Sugars: 0.6 g) Traditional kolbassa can be pretty fatty, but this European-style lean ham version from Piller's is higher in protein with moderate fat. The sodium content is respectable for a ham product, but it nearly hits 20 per cent of the daily limit with just 493 g in a 56 g serving (the package serving suggestion is 100 g with 880 mg sodium). The ingredient list is traditional, though it includes nitrates. Try pairing a small portion with extra veggies to balance sodium intake.
