Phillies sit Nick Castellanos for ‘inappropriate comment' to manager

Reuters3 days ago

June 17 - Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson told reporters before Tuesday's game at the Miami Marlins that Nick Castellanos was benched after making an "inappropriate" comment to Thomson.
In the eighth inning of a 5-2 series-opening win Monday, Thomson removed Castellanos from the outfield in favor of Johan Rojas as a defensive replacement. That's what prompted Castellanos to say something to Thomson that the manager deemed out of order.
"I understand the decision," Castellanos said Tuesday, per The Athletic. "It was when I got taken out. I wasn't happy about it. I spoke my mind. (Thomson) said that I crossed a line, so my punishment is that I'm not playing."
Max Kepler will start in Castellanos' usual spot in right field while batting cleanup for the Phillies on Tuesday.
The decision ends Castellanos' streak of 236 straight games started, which was the second-longest active streak in the major leagues behind Matt Olson of the Atlanta Braves. Olson is in the lineup for the 686th straight game Tuesday.
Castellanos, 33, is in his fourth season in Philadelphia and is batting .278 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs through 72 games.

Kate Upton and MLB star husband Justin Verlander welcome baby boy

Kate Upton and her MLB star husband Justin Verlander have welcomed their second baby, according to reports. The actress, 33, gave birth to their son, Bellamy Brooks Verlander, on June 19, a representative told TMZ. Just one day later, Verlander, 42, was placed on paternity leave by the San Francisco Giants Friday to spend quality time with his wife and their baby. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Genevieve 'Vivi' Upton Verlander - in November 2018. They have been married since 2017 after meeting in 2012. Verlander will miss San Francisco's home series against the Boston Red Sox, which begins Friday night, after being put on paternity leave by the team. The earliest the pitcher could return is Tuesday, when the Giants host the Miami Marlins at Oracle Park. The MLB's paternity leave policy allows players to step away for up to three games, barring any issues requiring a longer leave. If a player requires a longer absence, the team can apply to have him join the restricted list or go on family medical leave.

Chelsea's Jackson apologises for red card at Club World Cup

PHILADELPHIA, June 21 (Reuters) - Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson has apologised to his team mates and fans for his red card in the team's 3-1 loss to Flamengo at the Club World Cup on Friday. Jackson had been on the pitch for only four minutes in the second half when he was shown a straight red for a nasty studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas, his second red card in four matches. "I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my team mates, and all the fans watching, I let you down," Jackson, who turned 24 on Friday, wrote on Instagram. "Another red card... and honestly, I'm so angry at myself. I work very hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation. I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a football moment that went the wrong way. "No excuses. I take full responsibility. I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry." Jackson will serve a minimum one-game suspension. Chelsea next face Esperance Sportive de Tunis on Wednesday. Jackson was sent off against Newcastle in a Premier League game last month for a similar challenge. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said: "It's a little bit of a bad moment for Nico in this kind of things. Unfortunately now he will be out for a while, the time that we are here." Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella said that Jackson had apologised to his team mates after the game. "He's very sad," Cucurella said. "He's a young player with a lot of quality but maybe needs to improve a little bit in these things."

Lizzo baffles fans with bizarre first pitch at Dodgers game after opening up about Ozempic use

Lizzo was on hand with an unusual first pitch before the Los Angeles Dodgers' game against the San Diego Padres on Thursday. After being invited to take part in the traditional pregame ceremony at Dodger Stadium, the 37-year-old singer left fans baffled with her strange approach to pitching. She first took her place on the mound as Dodgers star Mookie Betts waited in preparation to take the catch, only to run forward while pretending to throw the ball twice. Lizzo then turned around and ran back to the mound, before finally throwing a pitch into Betts which bounced before finding his glove. A number of fans were left confused by her two fake throws, with one writing on X: 'The longest, most pointless and stupidest first pitch ever'. Another commented: 'So stupid. Stop trying to make it about you'. While a third simply asked: 'What the f*** is this?' Others, however, saw the funny side of Lizzo's twist on pitching. 'Love it,' one fan commented while another said 'still better than 50 Cent', referencing the rapper's infamous first pitch at a 2014 New York Mets game, widely considered one of the worst of all time. Lizzo just threw out a very interesting first pitch at Dodger Stadium 🤣 — Dodgers Nation (@DodgersNation) June 20, 2025 This comes after she admitted to briefly using Ozempic to aid in her extreme weight loss transformation. Lizzo talked about her Ozempic use during Thursday's episode of Trisha Paytas's Just Trish podcast. The singer revealed she started to take the GLP-1 medication at the beginning of her weight loss journey in 2023, but soon came to the conclusion that it wouldn't help her in the long term. Lizzo said: 'I tried everything. Ozempic works because you eat less food, yeah? So if you eat right, it makes you feel full. But if you can just do that on your own and get mind over matter, it's the same thing.' Many of her fans turned on her after she 'lied' for months and previously denied Ozempic allegations, claiming she achieved her much slimmer figure through 'weight lifting and calorie deficit'. She also added that she started getting results when she stopped being vegan after many years of not eating meat. Lizzo explained: 'What did it for me is, it was not being vegan. Because when I was vegan, I was consuming a lot of fake meats. I was eating a lot of bread. I was eating a lot of rice and I had to eat a lot of it to stay full. 'When I started actually eating whole foods and eating, like, beef and chicken and fish, I was actually full and not expanding my stomach by putting a lot of fake things in there that wasn't actually filling me up.' Criticism: Social media users reacted strongly to her Ozempic confession Supportive: However, other fans praised her for admitting it despite previously denying the rumors
