Nick Castellanos returns to Phillies lineup after benching and makes game-sealing catch vs Marlins
MIAMI (AP) — Nick Castellanos returned to the Philadelphia Phillies lineup and made the game-sealing catch in their 4-2 win over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday — a day after being benched for 'an inappropriate comment' the outfielder made when he was pulled for a defensive replacement on Monday. Castellanos doubled and singled Wednesday before catching Nick Fortes' flyball at the right-field wall in the ninth to end the game. Castellanos immediately lifted his shirt in celebration after the play. 'Casty — It's an amazing game, isn't it?" manager Rob Thomson said. 'I'm so happy for him. He hit the ball great, swung the bat great, had great at-bats and then makes that tremendous catch ... really played well.' Castellanos played right field and singled in four at-bats against the Marlins on Monday before Thomson opted to have Johan Rojas replace him in the bottom of the eighth with Philadelphia up 3-1. Max Kepler moved to right and Rojas played center. 'It's gone. It's gone. We're good,' Thomson said earlier Wednesday of the benching, which ended Castellanos' streak of 236 consecutive starts. Thomson said after Monday's game he had intended to insert Rojas behind Philadelphia's right-handed pitching and indicated that could be the plan moving forward. Thomson added Wednesday that approach 'just depends on the situations.' When asked if he would be OK with taking Castellanos out in a similar situation on Wednesday, Thomson said, 'Probably not today." The plan was also for Castellanos to only be benched for Tuesday's game, Thomson added. The Phillies lost that matchup 8-3. The 33-year-old Castellanos is in his fourth season with the Phillies, who are second in the NL East. He's hitting .278 with seven homers and 36 RBIs. ___ AP MLB:

Phillies' Nick Castellanos relegated to the bench after 'inappropriate comment,' manager Rob Thomson says
Nick Castellanos found himself in unfamiliar territory during the first pitch of the Philadelphia Phillies game against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday. The Phillies outfielder was engaged in a heated exchange with Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson during the team's 5-2 victory over the Marlins on Monday. Shortly before the start of the second game of the four-game series between the NL East division rivals, Thomson told reporters that Castellanos would be withheld from Tuesday's starting lineup. Thomson cited an "inappropriate comment" Castellanos made, which appeared to prompt the manager to sit the star right fielder for at least one game. The comment in question was made at some point after Castellanos was pulled from Monday's contest. "One of the many things about Nick that I love is that he's very emotional," Thomson said. "He loves to play, and he loves to play every inning of every game. I just thought last night he made an inappropriate comment after he came out, and so today, he's not going to play. And I'm going to leave it at that." Max Kepler moved from his post in centerfield to handle right field duties for Castellanos. Meanwhile, Johan Rojas became the game's new centerfielder. Kepler started in right field on Tuesday in Miami. Castellanos said he was less than pleased about being pulled from Monday's game. "I wasn't happy about it. Spoke my mind," Castellanos said, per the Philadelphia Inquirer. "He said that I crossed a line. So, my punishment is I'm not playing." He also acknowledged that the manager has the final say on who does and doesn't play in a particular game. "It's his decision. He's the manager," Castellanos said, according to The Athletic. Castellanos inked a massive, five-year contract with the Phillies in 2022. The 33-year-old outfielder has a .278 batting average and has hit seven home runs in 72 games this season. Prior to Tuesday, Castellanos hadn't missed a game since Sept. 30, 2023. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Phillies sit Nick Castellanos for ‘inappropriate comment' to manager
June 17 - Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson told reporters before Tuesday's game at the Miami Marlins that Nick Castellanos was benched after making an "inappropriate" comment to Thomson. In the eighth inning of a 5-2 series-opening win Monday, Thomson removed Castellanos from the outfield in favor of Johan Rojas as a defensive replacement. That's what prompted Castellanos to say something to Thomson that the manager deemed out of order. "I understand the decision," Castellanos said Tuesday, per The Athletic. "It was when I got taken out. I wasn't happy about it. I spoke my mind. (Thomson) said that I crossed a line, so my punishment is that I'm not playing." Max Kepler will start in Castellanos' usual spot in right field while batting cleanup for the Phillies on Tuesday. The decision ends Castellanos' streak of 236 straight games started, which was the second-longest active streak in the major leagues behind Matt Olson of the Atlanta Braves. Olson is in the lineup for the 686th straight game Tuesday. Castellanos, 33, is in his fourth season in Philadelphia and is batting .278 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs through 72 games. --Field Level Media
