Vaishno Devi shrine gets new AI-powered surveillance system with facial recognition, crowd management tools
Inaugurating a CCTV surveillance system with an integrated command and control centre for the Vaishno Devi shrine, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said the 'cutting-edge technology' would ensure a hassle-free pilgrimage, with real-time monitoring and crowd management.
According to a statement, the system features AI-based analytics and features like gesture recognition, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), facial recognition, an intrusion detection system, and crowd management tools.
An integrated command and control centre (ICCC) located at Katra and seven sub-control centres along the pilgrimage route have been established for localised monitoring and coordination, ensuring 24×7 monitoring of all vulnerable and high-traffic zones and enabling prompt response to crowd build-up, security breaches and medical emergencies.
Over 700 cameras have been deployed across the shrine area, including 170 new high-definition cameras and integration of more than 500 existing cameras, covering all critical and vulnerable locations, the statement said.
Sinha said the AI-powered system would significantly enhance safety and security, and improve crowd control measures and operational efficiency within the shrine area.
Anshul Garg, the CEO of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, gave a detailed presentation on the ICCC's technical features and expected benefits in day-to-day shrine functioning. He said the centre is equipped to generate automated alerts for crowd congestion, route blockages, landslides or other emergencies, thereby enabling swift decision-making and response.
The Lieutenant Governor interacted with the engineers and operational staff at the centre, and emphasised the need for the regular training of staff and seamless collaboration with security agencies and other stakeholders to maximise the centre's utility.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board recently provided security equipment to security agencies deployed for yatra management, including X-ray baggage scanners, door frame metal detectors, hand-held metal detectors, and under-vehicle search mirrors/scanners, to enhance security at the shrine area, in pursuance to the joint security review conducted last year on the directions of the Lieutenant Governor.
Ashok Bhan, a member of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board; Bhim Sen Tuti, the IGP of Jammu; Nidhi Malik, the Deputy Commissioner of Reasi; and other senior police officers and security personnel were present on the occasion.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has announced the new initiative to crack down on EoL vehicles still plying in the national capital, contributing to the worsening air quality in the region. The EoL vehicles will be identified with the help of the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras installed at fuel stations across Delhi. ANPR Cameras: How does it work? The ANPR cameras installed outside fuel stations read the license plate numbers in real-time. The system cross-verifies the registration plate with the Vahan database comprising owner details, fuel type, and vehicle's age. If the system detects the vehicle to be over 10 years (diesel) or 15 years (petrol) of age, it will be flagged as an EoL vehicle. The system will flag the vehicle and alert the fuel station operator to deny refuelling the same. The violation will be logged and shared with the enforcement agencies for further action, including impounding and scrapping the end-of-life vehicle. End-of-Life Vehicles refuelling ban to apply across NCR The CAQM has further announced that the enforcement will extend to Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, and Sonipat from November 1 onwards. Meanwhile, the rest of the National Capital Region (NCR) will follow through by April 1, 2026. CAQM says the ANPR cameras enable real-time recording and tracking vehicle data. A recent report states that about 3.63 crore vehicles have been screened through this system, of which 4.90 lakh vehicles have been identified as end-of-life vehicles. The report further states that 29.52 lakh vehicles renewed their Pollution Under Control Certificates (PUCC), helping generate fines amounting to ₹ 168 crore. To ensure compliance of the new order, the Transport Department, Government of NCT of Delhi, has deployed 100 teams to actively monitor vehicle data to identify fuel stations that have a higher concentration of EoL vehicles. From July 1, some vehicles in Delhi won't get fuel at petrol pumps
From July 1, diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years will not be able to refuel in Delhi, even if registered in other Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced the new regulation on Friday to help combat air pollution in the CHANGING?
