IPOH: Amid rising public concern over recurring loud booms and brief tremors reported in several areas, the Perak Mentri Besar has urged calm and assured residents that no seismic activity has been officially detected in the state.
Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad acknowledged that strange vibrations had recently been felt in Ipoh and surrounding areas, similar to an unexplained incident in 2024.
'Last year, people in Taiping, Kuala Kangsar, and even Ipoh experienced what they described as an explosion-like tremor. Each believed it happened in their own area.
'The phenomenon, which has yet to be scientifically explained, was also reportedly felt in Selangor earlier this year, adding to speculation about its origins,' he told reporters after closing the National Training Week (NTW) 2025 at the Ipoh Convention Centre on Friday (June 21).
The incident on June 18, around 10.30am, sparked concern among residents in Chemor, Chepor, and Tanah Hitam.
Saarani called for the matter to be studied by relevant technical departments or geological experts, as current monitoring systems have not confirmed any earthquakes or ground tremors in Malaysia.
'We do not know yet what exactly is happening, but I hope the public doesn't panic. So far, there has been no detection of any earthquake or tremor.
'Authorities are expected to consult the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) and geological researchers to further investigate the cause of these mysterious tremors,' he said.

26 Sarawak schools receive robotics kits to boost STEM skills
Sagah (centre) hands over the robotic kit to the school representatives on stage. KUCHING (June 19): A total of 26 schools across Sarawak have been selected to receive robotics kits as part of the state's ongoing effort to cultivate digital skills and foster interest in robotics among students. The initiative, under the STEM Trailblazers Sarawak programme, was launched in conjunction with preparations for the National Robotics Competition (NRC) 2025, which will be held from July 17 to 19. In a speech delivered by Sarawak State Education Director Omar Mahli ― represented by Sarawak Education Department (JPN) deputy director (Learning Sector) Siti Zulaiha Ibrahim ― he said the robotics kits were allocated based on specific criteria, with priority given to schools new to national robotics competitions but that have shown strong potential and commitment. 'More importantly, these schools have dedicated teachers who are passionate, willing to learn, and committed to guiding their students in coding and robotics,' he said. A total of 13 primary and 13 secondary schools from 13 District Education Offices across Sarawak were selected under the programme. Omar praised the role of school administrators, principals, and teachers in supporting and sustaining robotics education. 'Without the encouragement and resources provided by school leadership, this programme would not be able to flourish,' he said. He also extended appreciation to partners for their continuous support and collaboration in promoting robotics education. 'To our students, we hope these kits inspire you to think creatively, develop problem-solving skills, and collaborate with your peers. 'Let this be the beginning of an exciting journey into the world of robotics and beyond,' he added. Also present was State Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

AI clinic to address healthcare challenges
Published on: Monday, June 16, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 16, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: Lo presenting an award to an excellent student at the programme. TAWAU: Malaysia's pioneering artificial intelligence (AI) clinic is set to be established in Tawau within the next two to three months, pending final licensing approvals, said Tawau Member of Parliament Datuk Lo Su Fui on Saturday. The groundbreaking project is a collaboration between the Sabah Government and private technology partners, designed to address the State's unique healthcare challenges. Advertisement Lo said Sabah's geographical distance from the Federal capital has resulted in critical shortages of specialist doctors and advanced medical equipment. 'These factors make AI technology particularly suitable for Sabah and Tawau, as it enables us to receive treatment and specialist consultations remotely, even when doctors are located overseas. 'This advanced technology can save lives and overcome medical treatment limitations caused by distance and expertise constraints,' he said. He said discussions have already been held with relevant ministries including the State Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Tawau Municipal Council and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Lo said this to reporters after the Selangkah ke Menara Gading (Semega) 2025 and SMJ Drone 2025 programme organised by the Tawau Parliament at the Tawau Community Hall, which attracted over 5,000 students from Tawau and Kalabakan. During the event, Lo also presented the Tawau Parliament Excellence Student Awards to outstanding SPM 2024 graduates, noting that the Tawau District Education Office achieved the best performance in Sabah and ranked among the top five nationally this year. The programme, now in its second year, incorporated AI elements and drone technology education, which Lo pointed out as essential knowledge for future development in agriculture, marine resources and local socio-economic growth. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
