Cremonese promoted to Serie A with playoff win over Spezia

Straits Times01-06-2025

Cremonese were promoted to Serie A after a two-year absence, following a 3–2 victory at Spezia in the second leg of their playoff final on Sunday.
After the first game ended goalless on Thursday, the second match turned into a thriller as a double from Manuel De Luca and a goal from Michele Collocolo gave Cremonese a three-goal lead.
Spezia rallied with two late goals but could not overcome the deficit and will remain in Serie B for the next season.
The Lombardy club Cremonese, relegated in 2023, will now join Pisa and Sassuolo in returning to Italian top flight, taking the places of Empoli, Venezia and Monza, who were relegated at the end of the season.
"This season will be remembered for all we achieved: with sheer determination and plenty of drive, we secured promotion," Cremonese manager Giovanni Stroppa told DAZN. REUTERS

Mandatory Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS Sinner and singer Bocelli strike up partnership for new single World number one Jannik Sinner has formed a new doubles partnership but the duo will be battling for chart success rather than Grand Slam titles after the Italian released a single with compatriot and opera tenor Andrea Bocelli on Friday. The three-time Grand Slam champion Sinner promoted the song titled 'Polvere e Gloria' or 'Dust and Glory' on Instagram. The video features footage from the pair's childhoods and more recent clips of the singer and Sinner, clutching a racket and tennis ball, in front of a piano in Bocelli's home in Tuscany. Sinner's speeches form part of the song, which is in Italian and English, with Bocelli in full flow. "Every life is a potential work of art: each of us bears the sweet responsibility of nurturing our talents in the daily acrobatics of living, pursuing our dreams while remaining steadfastly true to our values," the pair wrote on Instagram. "This duet is such a bold leap that it has ignited our passion, born of shared and unwavering desire to express our deep belief that nothing is impossible." Sinner, the U.S. Open and Australian Open champion, said he was honoured to be part of the project with Bocelli, describing the singer as a "unique and extraordinary voice" and "a flag for our country in the rest of the world". "I could never have imagined hearing my voice in one of his songs. It's extremely moving," the 23-year-old added. Sinner, who was beaten by Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in an epic French Open final earlier this month, lost in the last 16 of the Halle Open on Thursday in a blow to his preparations for Wimbledon which gets underway on June 30. Convicted former Dutch international Promes extradited to Netherlands

Soccer Football - Europa League - Group C - Leicester City v Spartak Moscow - King Power Stadium, Leicester, Britain - November 4, 2021 Spartak Moscow's Quincy Promes during the warm up before the match REUTERS/David Klein/File Photo AMSTERDAM - Former Netherlands international Quincy Promes has been extradited by the United Arab Emirates to the Netherlands, where he is to serve jail sentences for drug trafficking and assault, Dutch prosecutors said on Friday. A Dutch court last year sentenced the former Ajax Amsterdam and Spartak Moscow forward to six years in absentia for his direct involvement with two shipments of cocaine from Brazil through the port of Antwerp, Belgium, to the Netherlands in 2020. In 2023, Promes was also sentenced in absentia to 18 months in jail for assault in connection with a fight in 2020 in which he stabbed a cousin in the knee. Promes has denied all charges and has filed an appeal in both cases. The 33-year-old, who has 50 caps for the Netherlands, was arrested in Dubai in March last year, at the request of the Dutch public prosecution service when he was at a training camp with Spartak Moscow. He was later released from detention under restrictions, which included that he not be allowed to leave the United Arab Emirates. Spartak Moscow then terminated his contract, after which he joined UAE second-tier club United FC of Dubai. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
