KDN To Probe, Mull Stern Action Relating To Erroneous Infographic On New IGP

GENERAL
PUTRAJAYA, June 23 (Bernama) -- The Home Ministry (KDN) will investigate a recent erroneous infographic on the 15th Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, published by a local Malay daily.
Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the ministry will look into the matter from all angles, including potential legal action or direct engagement with the media involved.
'If necessary, we will summon them for clarification and take the opportunity to convey how false and irresponsible reporting can have serious implications.
'However, any action taken should not be construed as the government undermining media freedom,' he told reporters after attending the ministry's monthly assembly today.
While expressing strong regret over the report, which claimed that the IGP was a member of the PKR Central Leadership Council, Saifuddin also described the mistake as serious, as it involved the reputation of the highest-ranking officer in the country's largest enforcement agency.
'The facts presented were obviously incorrect. The biodata profile included all of Datuk Seri Khalid's past experiences, with an apparent intention to insert misleading information, despite the police having already issued an official and verified profile,' he said.
The minister stressed that an established media outlet should understand journalistic discipline, especially the obligation to verify facts, all the more crucial when reporting on a senior police officer with decades of service.
'Surely some effort should have been made to verify the facts. At a time when political divisions and hate sentiments are intensifying, such irresponsible reporting is like wildfire in a dry season,' he said.
Saifuddin also criticised the media outlet's casual explanation that the error was unintentional, saying it failed to acknowledge the significant consequences.

Indonesian rape suspect who escaped Sibu lock-up recaptured after midnight manhunt

SIBU, June 23 — An Indonesian detainee who escaped from the Sibu Central Police Station lock-up at around 4 pm last Saturday was recaptured early this morning. The 25-year-old suspect was re-arrested at Lorong Terap, approximately 1.4km from the station, at around 12.30 am. 'The suspect was still in handcuffs and wearing the lock-up attire,' Sibu Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said in a statement here. The suspect, who was under remand for investigation under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code for the offence of rape, was still in lawful police custody and was wearing the standard purple lock-up attire and handcuffs when he fled. According to Zulkipli, following the escape incident, investigations are underway under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code, which provide for a prison sentence of up to two years, or a fine, or both. Section 223 applies to officers whose negligence allows a detainee to escape, while Section 224 relates to detainees who flee from lawful custody. Zulkipli expressed gratitude for the public's cooperation in providing information that led to the suspect's recapture, but at the same time advised the public not to speculate in ways that could interfere with the police investigation. — Bernama

UMS To Lodge Police Report On Burning Of PM's Caricature, Denies Involvement

KOTA KINABALU, June 23 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will lodge a police report in connection with the recent incident of Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally participants who burned a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. UMS said that it was not involved either directly or indirectly with the rally or the incident, which went viral on social media recently, and the report would be made to facilitate further investigations. "Besides being contrary to the norms of peaceful assemblies, UMS views the act as uncivilised, immature and does not reflect the intellect of the students of the institution of higher education,' it said in a statement today.

National Women's Policy 2025–2030 Aims To Empower Women, Strengthen Nation

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) -- The third edition of the National Women's Policy (DWN) and Women's Development Action Plan (PTPW) 2025–2030 serves as a strategic guide to implement programmes, initiatives and collaborative efforts by all stakeholders. Women's Development Department (JPW) director-general Hanani Sapit said the renewed policy reflects the government's ongoing commitment under the Malaysia Madani framework to uphold and elevate the status of women, ensuring they continue to be respected, celebrated and recognised across sectors, both locally and globally. 'This policy, led by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, is not solely the responsibility of the ministry. It is a national-level policy involving federal and state governments, the private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and civil society,' she said during an interview on Bernama TV's Apa Khabar Malaysia programme today. The updated policy focuses on four key areas, namely economy, leadership, safety and well-being. Implementation began immediately following its launch on March 8 in conjunction with International Women's Day. Hanani said that in drafting the policy, the government strengthened engagement with ministries, agencies and NGOs to ensure it is embedded at the grassroots levels. At the same time, JPW, through its State Women's Development Offices, will continue to intensify advocacy and literacy programmes in communities. The DWN and PTPW 2025–2030 aim to enable women to participate meaningfully and realise their full potential through inclusive development and gender equality. The slogan 'Empowering Women, Strengthening the Nation' was adopted to reflect the role of women as national assets, capable of shaping the country's economic growth, given that they make up nearly 50 per cent of Malaysia's population. The policy also emphasises the importance of shared leadership between men and women in national development, in line with the demographic ratio of 111 men for every 100 women. 'This inclusive approach is crucial to ensure that policy and programme development remains people-friendly and socially inclusive. Gender equality is not just a moral goal, but a critical driver of economic and social progress,' she added.
