New IGP to harness AI in fight against crime
KUALA LUMPUR: Newly appointed Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail has pledged to strengthen the force's capabilities and credibility, particularly in combating cross-border crimes through the use of technology. He expressed hope that the move would steer the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) towards greater heights, in line with the force's modernisation, particularly in adopting the latest technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). 'To carry out future policing tasks, I believe the use of AI must be given due attention so that our force continues to progress and is able to deal with any form of threat,' he told reporters after the 'Paluan Berundur KPN' farewell ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here today. Mohd Khalid officially assumed duties as the 15th Inspector-General of Police (IGP) today, replacing Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, at a handover of duties ceremony witnessed by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. The event was also attended by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil and senior PDRM officials. Meanwhile, Mohd Khalid expressed his gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, for consenting to his appointment as the 15 IGP and to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the trust placed in him. 'I would also like to thank the Home Minister for his leadership in steering the PDRM towards greater excellence. 'My deepest appreciation and thanks also go to the 14th IGP, and I believe I will carry on the initiatives that have already been implemented,' he said.

[UPDATED] Fighting crime in future time: New IGP vows to utilise AI
KUALA LUMPUR: Newly appointed Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail vowed to place emphasis on the use of artificial intelligence to enhance the capabilities of the police. "In order to carry out policing in the near future, the use of artificial intelligence is an issue that I feel will need to be focused on. "This is to ensure that the police continue to evolve and advance forward," he told reporters at the Police Training Centre here after his handing-over of duties ceremony today. He said AI could help police resolve security problems that arise, whether they are regular crime or national threats. "With this opportunity, I will lead the police to greater achievements in line with modernisation, especially in the use of the latest technology. "The best way for me to reveal the rest of my plans is through a press conference in a few days' time," he said. Khalid said he would continue the various efforts implemented by his predecessors. "I believe this is an opportunity for me to increase the efforts and credibility of the police in handling crime, including cross-border crimes," he said. Khalid took over as the inspector-general of police from Tan Sri Razarudin Husain today. Khalid was born on April 8, 1965, in Manong, Perak, and he joined the police in 1987. He has held various notable posts throughout his career, including from 2014 to 2018, where he served as the police attaché at the Malaysian Embassy in London before returning to Malaysia to helm the Special Branch in Pahang. He was promoted in 2023 to Bukit Aman as the Special Branch director, where he continued to serve until he was promoted to the top post in the force.

Outgoing IGP Razarudin retires after 42 years, urges creation of dedicated police ministry
KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Outgoing Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain today handed over his duties to his successor, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, marking the end of a 42-year career with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). The official handover ceremony, held at the Dewan Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Hashim in Pulapol Kuala Lumpur, also saw the appointment of Datin Sri Munirah Che Rose as the new chairperson of the Police Family Association (PERKEP) Malaysia. Razarudin congratulated Khalid on his appointment as the 15th Inspector-General of Police, expressing confidence in Khalid's leadership and integrity in taking the force to greater heights. 'Congratulations also to Datin Sri Munirah Che Rose on her appointment. I believe she will continue to uphold PERKEP's legacy,' he said in a statement today. He also extended his congratulations to several senior officers appointed as department directors, including CP Hussein Omar Khan, CP Rusdi Mohd Isa, CP Hamzah Ahmad and DCP Gilbert Philip Layang. Reflecting on his tenure, Razarudin highlighted the force's evolution into a respected institution in the region and globally, crediting the leadership of the Prime Minister and Home Minister, as well as the commitment of PDRM personnel. He acknowledged several key initiatives, including the RM2.3 billion allocation for police infrastructure under the 12th Malaysia Plan, the strengthening of border security in Sabah and Sarawak, and ongoing efforts to revamp public sector remuneration. He also outlined his vision for the force, which included the formation of a dedicated Cyber and Technology Department, enhancing police training through accredited diploma programmes, and positioning PDRM's Kuala Lumpur Police College as a regional hub for cybercrime and narcotics research. Razarudin expressed hope that the government would consider placing PDRM under a dedicated ministry, similar to law enforcement agencies in other countries, to further strengthen the institution. Emphasising the importance of integrity, he said the force would continue to address internal issues of misconduct and corruption, while also enhancing communication with the public and media to build trust. He concluded by expressing gratitude to all PDRM personnel, strategic partners and PERKEP members, and wished his successor continued success in leading the police force.
