Seitz to launch Diocese environmental plan during special Mass on Sunday
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Bishop Mark J. Seitz will celebrate a special bilingual Mass Sunday, May 25 and will sign and inaugurate the Diocese's environmental action plan.
The Mass will be at 11 a.m. May 25 at St. Luke Catholic Church, 930 E. Redd Road.
The Mass will mark the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si', Pope Francis' landmark encyclical on care for 'our common home,' and the 800th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi's 'Canticle of the Creatures,' the Diocese said.
As part of this diocesan celebration, Seitz will officially sign and inaugurate the Laudato Si' Action Plan for the Diocese of El Paso.
'This new plan will guide the local Church's commitment to the values of Laudato Si' and Laudate Deum, deepening efforts toward environmental stewardship and solidarity with the poor across all ministries and institutions,' the Diocese said.
The Mass will bring together representatives from local parishes, Catholic organizations, and environmental advocacy groups, including the Care for Creation Ministry at St. Luke, the Texas Chapter of the Laudato Si' Movement, and New Mexico–El Paso Power and Light, the Diocese said.
'Pope Francis reminds us that care for the Earth is inseparable from care for the most vulnerable,' Seitz said. 'This plan invites every person, parish, and diocesan structure to reflect on our impact and take real steps to live more sustainably and faithfully.'
Released on May 24, 2015, Laudato Si' called for an 'integral ecology' that recognizes the deep connections between the environmental crisis and global inequality, the Diocese said.
In 2023, Pope Francis continued this message with Laudate Deum, which addressed the growing climate emergency and the moral urgency of collective action.
The Diocese's new action plan will provide tools and guidance for all Catholics to engage in concrete steps, the Diocese said.
These actions can include creating special ministries, evaluating use of resources and adopting sustainable practices, the Diocese said.
The Laudato Si' Diocesan Action Commission is available to assist parishes and organizations looking to implement or expand environmental initiatives, the Diocese said.

In a video address last week to the faithful in his hometown of Chicago, Pope Leo XIV sent a message of encouragement to young Americans. 'So many people who suffer from different experiences of depression or sadness — they can discover that the love of God is truly healing, that it brings hope,' the newly elected pontiff said. Father Tidd suggested that young men affected by loneliness take initiative and find others who share common experiences, dreams, ambitions and, together, work to find answers to questions about meaning and purpose. 'That's one of the benefits of coming to a Catholic school, is that we have that structure that if a student wishes to take advantage of – particularly not just in class, but on athletic teams or extracurriculars – when you form those tight bonds, then you can begin to ask those deep questions,' he added.

No gavel needed: Pat Daly steps down after four decades on Catholic board
It took several prompts and iterations for Catholic trustees , with the help of ChatGPT, to create the perfect parting prayer for Pat Daly . A lot has changed in three decades, but the chair seat hasn't. Now, after 34 years, Daly, who has helmed the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board since 1991, is stepping down. 'Through tireless days and steadfast years, he served with faith, with hopes and fears,' trustees read in unison from the text brought by trustee Mark Valvasori. 'A shepherd strong, with heart and soul, committed to the common goal.' Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board chair Pat Daly is stepping down after 34 years. It's the end of an era for the board — and for Daly, whose 40-year run as Ward 7 representative comes to an end on Friday. He was first elected in 1985, replacing his father on the board after the elder Daly's death. Catholics call for environmental action at Rio de Janeiro's iconic Christ the Redeemer statue
RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazilian Catholic worshippers laid down an eco-friendly carpet in front of the world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday and called for the protection of the environment ahead of UN climate talks in the Amazon. Tapestries are a fixture of the Corpus Christi religious feast when Catholics celebrate what they believe is the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. This year, the colorful carpet was made from approximately 460 kilos (1,014 pounds) of recycled plastic caps. Over the past few years the Christ the Redeemer sanctuary has increasingly used the attention the iconic statue generates to spotlight environmental concerns. 'These caps could be polluting the environment. Today they're here as a carpet,' said Marcos Martins, environmental manager and educator at the sanctuary. 'It's the circular economy: we take the material, we're reusing it here and then we're going to reuse it again with an exhibition.' Just after day break and before the first flock of tourists arrived Thursday, Cardinal Orani João Tempesta led celebrations at the site overlooking Guanabara Bay and Rio's famed Sugarloaf mountain. The caps are 'a good reminder of our co-responsibility with ecology, of our concern for the environment, which are very characteristic of Christ the Redeemer,' Rio's archbishop told journalists. Thursday's celebration also paid homage to the late Pope Francis and his Laudato Si', a landmark environmental encyclical in which he cast care for the environment in stark moral terms. In the papal letter Francis called for a bold cultural revolution to correct what he said was a 'structurally perverse' economic system in which the rich exploited the poor, turning Earth into a pile of 'filth' in the process. 'The COP30 is coming up and we've just had the U.N. Ocean Conference. Nothing makes more sense than Christ being a great spokesperson for this issue,' said Carlos Lins, the sanctuary's marketing director. Earlier this month, the sanctuary held workshops, discussion groups and actions focusing on environmental preservation. The statue — perched on the Corcovado mountain -- is itself located in the Tijuca National Park. Brazil has been hit by a series of environmental disasters in recent years, including severe droughts in the Amazon, wildfires in the Pantanal and flooding in the south.
