Sunscreen isn't seasonal—Myths you seriously need to stop believing

Time of India17 hours ago

Sunscreen isn't just for the beach or summer holidays it's your skin's daily shield against premature ageing, pigmentation, and invisible damage, year-round. Despite growing awareness, several myths still prevent people from using sunscreen correctly or consistently.
Let's separate fact from fiction.
Myth 1: Sunscreen is only needed during summer or when it's sunny
Fact: UV radiation is present all year round, regardless of weather or temperature.
Research
shows that up to 80% of UV rays still reach your skin even on cloudy or rainy days. UVA rays, in particular, penetrate deep into the skin and accelerate ageing, pigmentation, and collagen breakdown. Daily sunscreen use is crucial—rain or shine.
Myth 2: Sunscreen isn't necessary indoors
Fact: UVA rays can penetrate glass, including windows at home, in your car, or at the office.
This constant low-level exposure contributes to cumulative skin damage, even if you're not stepping outside. If you spend long hours near a window, you should still apply sunscreen, especially on the face, neck, and hands.
Myth 3: Darker skin tones don't need sunscreen
Fact: While melanin provides some natural UV protection, it's not enough to prevent sun damage. People with deeper skin tones are still prone to hyperpigmentation, uneven tone, and long-term damage.
More importantly, skin cancers in darker skin are often diagnosed later, which can lead to worse outcomes. Everyone, regardless of skin tone, should use SPF.
Myth 4: Makeup with SPF is enough
Fact: SPF in makeup is a helpful bonus, but not a replacement for standalone sunscreen. Most people don't apply enough makeup to achieve the level of sun protection claimed on the label. Think of SPF in your foundation as a top-up not your primary shield. For real protection, use sunscreen first, then layer makeup on top.
Sun protection is not a seasonal habit it's a lifelong commitment. Whether it's sunny, cloudy, rainy, or snowy, sunscreen should be the final step of your morning routine, every day.
Sun damage is silent and cumulative it builds up over years. Wearing sunscreen daily is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to future-proof your skin. The next time you wonder whether to skip sunscreen because it's gloomy weather or you're indoors, remember this sun damage is silent, cumulative and often shows up years later. Today, by taking a few seconds to apply sunscreen -- you can go a long way in keeping your skin healthier tomorrow.

Delhi Govt to host Yoga events at 11 locations with about 20,000 participants

New Delhi [India], June 20 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the Delhi government will officially celebrate International Yoga Day at 11 locations across the city, marking a significant scale-up in efforts to promote yoga. Approximately 20,000 people are expected to participate in these government-organised events. She criticised the previous government for allegedly politicising yoga and failing to organise official programs. A special yoga song for Delhi, composed by Amit Trivedi, has been introduced for the occasion. 'The Delhi government has decided that Yoga Day will be officially celebrated at 11 places. For the first time, the government is organising big events for Yoga Day on a large scale in Delhi, in which about 20,000 participants will participate in all these government programs. I have received more than 300 invites for Yoga Day, in which the people of Delhi want me to come. The previous government used to see Modi Ji's face in Yoga. So, they had problems adopting yoga, and they never officially organised yoga programs. This time, a very beautiful Yoga song for Delhi has been sung by Amit Trivedi,' she said. Delhi Chief Minister asserted that she will practice Yoga on the banks of the Yamuna on the International Day of Yoga. Speaking to the media ahead of International Yoga Day, she said, 'Tomorrow I will practice Yoga on the banks of Yamuna... Tomorrow will be celebrated like a festival in many places in Delhi... The Delhi government will celebrate this International Yoga Day with great enthusiasm.' Earlier in the day, she said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi made Yoga Day recognised on the world stage so that every country in the world is adopting Yoga with great affection today. Addressing an event at a Yoga, Meditation, and Medical Camp in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh ahead of International Yoga Day tomorrow, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, 'PM Modi got Yoga recognised on the world stage in such a way that every country in the world is adopting Yoga with great affection today... India will be able to prosper only if it remains healthy.' As India is gearing up to celebrate the 11th International Day of Yoga on June 21, the government is organising a multitude of events nationwide to mark the occasion with 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health' as this year's theme. Yoga At 20,000 Feet: Indian Army Soldiers Mark International Yoga Day At Siachen

Last Updated: According to the Indian Army, troops participated in the yoga practice early Friday morning as part of coordinated celebrations held nationwide. The Indian Army marked the 11th International Day of Yoga by conducting yoga sessions at the Siachen Glacier, including at the base camp and forward posts, braving sub-zero temperatures and one of the most unforgiving terrains on the planet. According to the Indian Army, troops participated in the yoga practice early Friday morning as part of coordinated celebrations held nationwide. The sessions at Siachen, the highest battlefield in the world, were carried out despite extreme weather conditions and high-altitude challenges, reinforcing yoga's relevance in maintaining resilience and endurance among soldiers. Visuals shared by the Army on official social media platforms showed personnel performing Yoga asanas against the snow-covered backdrop of Siachen, which is located at an altitude of over 20,000 feet and considered the highest battlefield in the world. The International Day of Yoga is observed annually on June 21 following a United Nations resolution adopted in 2014. This year's global theme, 'Yoga for Self and Society," emphasises individual wellness and collective harmony. Yoga has been formally integrated into the Indian Army's routine training and wellness programs, particularly for troops deployed in high-stress, high-altitude environments such as Siachen.
