Nearly 50,000 students in Tamil Nadu's Adi Dravidar hostels to receive TAHDCO's Polivu personal care kits
Nearly 50,000 students residing in Adi Dravidar welfare hostels across Tamil Nadu will receive personal care kits under the brand name Polivu, launched by the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO).
According to official sources, a total of 1,331 Adi Dravidar hostels for school and college students are functioning in the State. Nearly 35,000 school students and 15,000 college students staying in these hostels are set to receive 'Polivu' personal care kits, this year. Last academic year, the TAHDCO had distributed such kits on a pilot-basis to students residing in college hostels.
Earlier, Tamil Nadu government provided financial assistance of ₹100 per month for school students and ₹150 for college students to purchase personal care products. In a move aimed at ensuring the quality of these products and creating livelihood opportunities for women from Scheduled Caste communities, TAHDCO has decided to manufacture and distribute these personal care products, replacing the financial assistance initiative, through a newly-formed society under the Polivu brand, said official sources.
Vasanthi Kumaresan, State Project Manager (Schemes), TAHDCO, said the products are being made by 60 women belonging to Scheduled Caste communities from five self-help groups at a manufacturing unit located in Ambattur, Chennai, established with financial support from the National Scheduled Caste Finance and Development Corporation (NSFDC).
What's in the kit?
Each Polivu kit contains four 75 gm bath soaps, 200 ml hair wash shampoo, 200 ml coconut oil, 500 gm detergent powder, 150 gm detergent soap and one toothbrush and toothpaste. While coconut oil is being sourced and packed under the 'Polivu' brand, the toothbrush and toothpaste are currently outsourced. TAHDCO has proposed to include bamboo toothbrushes sourced from a startup in future kits as a sustainable alternative, Ms. Vasanthi said.
The kits will be distributed thrice a year to ensure students in Adi Dravidar hostels have consistent access to essential personal care products, promoting better hygiene and well-being. The initiative also empowers women from Scheduled Caste communities who could earn at least ₹ 15,000 a month, officials said.

TAHDCO forms community groups to oversee maintenance of multipurpose halls under its domain
The Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar and Housing Development Corporation (TAHDCO) has formed community groups consisting of members from Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) to manage and maintain community halls, village knowledge centres, and multipurpose centres under its control across the State, with an aim to ensure better upkeep of assets and promote community participation. According to official sources, previously, the responsibility of maintaining these community assets under TAHDCO's control was vested with village panchayats. However, many of these assets were not maintained properly resulting in poor upkeep and damages to infrastructure. To address these concerns and ensure the effective utilisation of these spaces, TAHDCO has set up dedicated community hall maintenance groups comprising SC/ST members from local areas. These groups function similar to self-help groups, with a structured model of operation and financial backing. Each group receives a loan of ₹3.5 lakh from TAHDCO through the National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation (NSFDC) at a concessional interest rate. Further, the State government provides a 35% subsidy under the CM-ARISE scheme, reducing the repayment burden significantly, said K.S. Kandasamy, Managing Director, TAHDCO. The funds are being used to procure essential furniture such as chairs, dining tables, and office equipment. The groups are allowed to rent out the premises for events and functions at affordable rates to generate income. Unlike the earlier system, where the ownership of the asset was in the name of the respective panchayat president, the new model places the asset under the name of the District Manager, TAHDCO. Beyond financial benefits, this model gives a sense of community ownership and responsibility, he added.

Mumbai Suburban District Planning Committee reviews schemes worth Rs 1144 crores
States » West Mumbai,May 30 (UNI) A meeting of Mumbai Suburban District Planning Committee was held under the chairmanship of Guardian Minister and Minister of Information, Technology and Cultural Affairs Adv. Ashish Shelar on Friday. In this meeting, detailed discussions were held on the implementation of schemes for 2024-25, analysis of expenditure and planning of new schemes for 2025-26. Out of the Rs 1088.77 crore available for approved works in the last financial year, 99.8 percent i.e. Rs 1086.75 crore was distributed to various agencies. On this occasion, information was given on the proposed schemes worth Rs 1144.02 crores for 2025-26. This includes Rs 1066 crores for the General Scheme, Rs 71 crores for the Scheduled Caste Sub-Scheme, and Rs 7.02 crores for schemes outside the Tribal Sub-Scheme area.
