‘CM Stalin disconnected from ground reality': Anbumani Ramadoss
VELLORE: PMK 'working' president Anbumani Ramadoss on Monday launched a scathing attack on the ruling DMK government, accusing Chief Minister MK Stalin of being 'completely disconnected from ground realities'. Speaking at the party's district general body meeting in Vellore, Anbumani said the government failed to act even as mango growers suffered huge losses after Andhra Pradesh government allegedly refused to procure mangoes from Tamil Nadu, despite the state recording a bumper harvest. 'While our farmers are staring at unsold produce and financial ruin, the chief minister is busy with roadshows, oblivious to the crisis on the ground,' he charged. Anbumani also questioned the government's investment claims, saying, 'They boast of Rs 10 lakh crore MoUs, but only Rs 50,000-60,000 crore actually came in.' Terming the DMK as a 'tyrannical regime,' he said the government had increased electricity tariffs four times in four years. 'From July 1, rates will rise again by 3.5%. The government purchases electricity at Rs 15 per unit from private companies when they could do it for Rs 3.75. This reeks of corruption.' Amid ongoing internal rift within the PMK, Anbumani reiterated the party's commitment to people-centric issues. He announced a massive tree plantation drive under the Green Motherland campaign, aiming to plant one million saplings from July 25, coinciding with the birthday of PMK founder and his father Dr S Ramadoss. The PMK leader also accused the DMK of betraying both Vanniyar and Scheduled Caste communities, despite relying on them for electoral success. 'You may suppress voices today, but the people will rise. In 10 months, the truth will come out,' he warned. Referring to the padayatra on July 25 to campaign for ten key development demands, Anbumani reaffirmed the PMK's resolve to unseat the DMK in the 2026 Assembly polls. At the meeting, 10 resolutions were adopted focusing on the development of Vellore district.

Court awards 7yr-6 month jail term to woman over fake FIR of gang rape
: The court of the special judge SC/ST Act on Monday awarded a seven years and six months prison term to a woman for lodging a fake FIR of gang rape against two men. Imposing a fine of ₹2.1 lakh on the woman, aged around 24 years, the court directed the state government to recover ₹2 lakh compensation that was given to the woman after the gang rape FIR was lodged in June 2021. This was the first installment of the ₹8 lakh total compensation which is awarded to a Scheduled Caste victim of gang rape. The court also suggested several measures to the state government to ensure such cases of fake FIR are not repeated. 'Instances of lodging fake FIR by misusing the special sections of the SC/ST Act are increasing,' the court said in the order. Both the victims Rajesh Kumar and Bhupendra Kumar Vishwakarma had to spend three months in jail. During the course of the trial, Vishwakarma died. Additional district judge Vivekanand Saran Tripathi, who is also special judge SC/ST Act, passed the order on Monday. Government advocate Arvind Kumar Mishra represented the state government in court. The court awarded two sentences to the woman. The first prison term is of six months under Section 182 of the IPC and a fine of ₹1000. This section is related to giving false information to a public servant with an intent to cause them to use their lawful power against any person. The court awarded a second sentence of seven years under Section 211 of the Indian Penal Code and a fine of ₹2 lakh. This section deals with falsely initiating criminal proceedings against an individual. 'Both the prison terms will run separately and a fine of ₹2.1 lakh has been imposed,' the court said. The court also suggested that the government should not award first instalment of the total compensation of ₹2 lakh to the victim after she lodges the rape FIR. The court suggested that 50% compensation must be awarded to the victim after the police validates the crime and files a chargesheet in court, said Manoj Tripathi, district government counsel (criminal) . THE CASE The woman lodged an FIR at Zaidpur police station in Barabanki district on June 29, 2021. In the FIR, she accused Rajesh Kumar and Bhupendra Kumar Vishwakarma of gang raping her in the adjoining Bakshi Ka Talab area on several occasions between January 2021 and June 2021. As Bakshi Ka Talab (BKT) falls in Lucknow district, the case was transferred to the BKT police station on May 9, 2022. Naveena Shukla, the then circle officer, BKT, started the probe on July 14, 2022. She submitted the final report in the court on September 7, 2022, closing the case stating that the gang rape charges were fake. She suggested in the report that the woman had levelled fake gang rape charges and also suggested action against her. However, the woman challenged the final report in court. Thereafter, the trial began in the court which ended this month and the final order was delivered on Monday. SUGGESTIONS BY COURT When an FIR of rape/ gang rape is lodged, the police must also mention that how many such FIRs the complainant or her family members have lodged against anyone. The police must also mention whether any application related to rape charges has also been given by the victim in any police station. Police must provide such details to the court during the trial of the case. Police should also take the help of AI tools in finding such facts. No compensation should be given to the victim after lodging an FIR. The compensation should only be given after the chargesheet is filed in court.

Karnataka: Misuse of Budaga Jangama caste certificate a worry
BENGALURU: A glaring discrepancy in the number of individuals claiming Scheduled Caste (SC) benefits under the Budaga Jangama or Beda Jangama category sparked serious concerns among experts. At a seminar held on Saturday, former Backward Classes Commission chairperson CS Dwarakanath revealed that while the genuine population of Budaga Jangamas is less than 25,000, over 4 lakh are believed to be availing benefits using fake SC caste certificates. Justice Nagamohan Das, too, expressed concerns and said he plans to take corrective steps to end this menace. Dwarakanath said the situation is not merely an administrative lapse but a systematic exploitation of the reservation system. Two FIRs under the Atrocities Act registered against ex-MP Jaleel
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Two FIRs were registered against former MP Syed Imtiaz Jaleel in the 24 hours ending Friday for allegedly using a discriminatory word against district guardian minister Sanjay Shirsat during a press conference, days after he made serious allegations against Shirsat's family over land acquisitions. Police said the two FIRs were registered at Kranti Chowk and Osmanpura police stations. Officers said they also received complaints on similar lines at different police stations, including Vedantnagar, but no decision was made to register fresh FIRs. Jaleel told TOI, "I just want Shirsat to reply to the questions I have raised about the huge moveable and immovable assets he has amassed. Unable to silence me, he is using police machinery to file such cases against me. I am ready to face all the consequences until all such elements are exposed." Police said based on the complaint lodged by Laxman Hivrale, an office-bearer of the Republican Party of India (Athawale), the Kranti Chowk police registered an FIR on Thursday night. In this FIR, Section 3 (1) of the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was invoked against Jaleel. On Friday, the assistant commissioner of police (City) issued directives to the Kranti Chowk police inspector for conducting a preliminary inquiry into the case and submit a report to him. The FIR was registered after a large number of Shirsat's supporters gathered at the police station on Thursday afternoon. The list of those who gathered included Jaleel's former loyalist Arun Borde, who said he intended to get FIRs registered across the state. "Though the second FIR was registered at Osmanpura police station, it will be merged with the first one registered at Kranti Chowk. The law is clear that there cannot be two FIRs for one violation, for which a person was already booked," said a senior police officer from the city police.
