WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Each step up the stairs represents a bigger success for Miketo Kirk.
Before joining the Greater Wichita YMCA's Livestrong program, a flight of stairs could've been a mountain.
'When I first got here, I was just so weak you cannot even imagine,' she explained. 'This chair right here. I couldn't even get up and down out of it.'
In spring 2024, Kirk was diagnosed with head and neck cancer.
'I had 37 rounds of radiation and six rounds of chemo,' she said.
Once in remission, she joined Livestrong.

'So we're helping individuals regain their strength, their stamina. We work on flexibility and balance,' said Debbie Cruz, Greater Wichita YMCA's Livestrong program director.
The 12-week program is free for anyone who has ever received a cancer diagnosis, regardless if they are a member at the Y.
'It could have been 10 years ago. It could have been 10 days ago,' Cruz said.
The group meets twice a week for 90 minutes. For the first hour, a trainer helps them build muscle; the second part focuses on building bonds.
'Until you've experienced (cancer), you really don't understand. So as they come together, they can say, 'yeah, I get it. I understand,'' Cruz said.

Each session is a safe space for survivors.
'In my life, I am the strong person. I am not able to cry around other people, but in here, I've been able to cry and let all that stuff out,' Miketo said.
The program sets the stage for a total transformation.
'That was a whole different woman, a whole different woman,' Miketo reflected.
She's now a woman who's ready to keep pushing.
YMCA's Livestrong is available across Wichita, Hutchinson, El Dorado, Andover and Newton. It's free whether or not you are a member. Once the 12 weeks are over, there is an alumni group that meets once a month.

Blue-green algae prompts health warnings at several kansas lakes

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNW) — State health and wildlife officials are warning Kansans to be cautious at a number of lakes this summer as blue-green algae blooms continue to pose health risks for both people and animals. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks issued multiple health advisories Friday, urging the public to avoid contact with affected water bodies and to watch for signs of harmful algae. Wichita activists plan peaceful protest on 'No Kings Day' Blue-green algae, also known as harmful algal blooms, can look like foam, paint, or scum on the water and appear in shades of blue, green, brown or red. The toxins they produce can be dangerous if ingested, inhaled, or touched, potentially causing skin rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and other symptoms. 'If the water looks suspicious or smells foul, stay out and keep pets away,' health officials say. Warning Level – Avoid Water Contact: Atchison City Lake #9 (Atchison County) Atchison State Fishing Lake (Atchison County) Frazier Lake (Grant County) Gathering Pond (Geary County) Jeffrey Energy Center Auxiliary Lake (Pottawatomie County) Jeffrey Energy Make-up Lake (Pottawatomie County) Watch Level – Algae May Be Present: Clinton Lake (Douglas County) Lake Parsons (Neosho County) Marion Reservoir (Marion County) Tuttle Creek Lake Zone A (Pottawatomie and Riley Counties) Warnock Lake (Atchison County) Advisory Lifted: Augusta Santa Fe Lake (Butler County) The severity of advisories ranges from Watch, indicating algae may be present, to Warning, meaning algae is confirmed and potentially harmful. In extreme cases, a Hazard status may be issued, recommending full or partial lake closures. Do not swim, wade, or ski near visible algae. Keep pets and livestock away from affected water. Rinse skin or pet fur with clean water after contact. Never drink untreated lake water. Only eat fillets from fish that have been rinsed with clean water. Exposure to blue-green algae can be particularly hazardous for animals. Pets that ingest algae-tainted water or eat dried algae along shorelines can become seriously ill or die. WSU Tech nursing program earns national accreditation

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — WSU Tech's nursing program is now nationally accredited, a move that could make it easier for future nurses to find jobs, transfer schools, and qualify for financial aid. The accreditation comes from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), which approved WSU Tech's program earlier this spring. It's a stamp of approval that shows the program meets national standards and is focused on preparing students for real-world healthcare jobs.
