Currys doubles tech recycling reward as they urge shoppers to bring in unwanted gadgets

Currys is offering shoppers money if they recycle tech through their free scheme - but only for a limited time.
With the world becoming more tech -focused over the years, many of us will most likely have unwanted or unused kit lying around our homes taking up space. For those who are unsure of what to do with these items, Currys is offering a recycling scheme to free us from the burden.
On top of this, to bring an added incentive for Brits to recycle their unwanted tech, Currys is doubling down on their rewards for those who choose to take part in their cash-for-trash scheme. However, this reward boost is only on a limited time offer.

The electrical giant is offering shoppers £10 off towards a minimum spend of £50 when they hand over any tech with a battery or plug that they no longer have use for.

The original deal is half of this, with shoppers getting £5 off a minimum spend of £25. While this money reward can make a positive dent into your next purchase, shoppers only have until July 8 to take part in the doubled up deal.
Currys chief people, communications and sustainability officer Paula Coughlan said: "This limited-time promotion not only incentivises customers to recycle their old tech, but also helps tackle the growing e-waste crisis in the UK.
"We're proud to be helping customers save, while making sure their unwanted tech is processed responsibly. It's better for us, better for customers, and better for the planet to help keep tech in the hands of the people that need it for as long as possible."
On top of this, customers who have higher value items also have the opportunity to access trade-in deals and get money off their upgraded purchase.
Shoppers who have tech lying around at home can go to Currys' website and see if their device qualifies for a trade-in.

Devices that may be eligible include smartphones, laptops, tablets, watches and gaming consoles.
After putting in the brand and model of the device, as well as if it was used for personal or business use and the condition of the tech (working or faulty), customers will be given a free and instant estimated value.

Shoppers can also head into their local store for staff to give a valuation and let you know how much your device is worth.
From there, shoppers will receive their trade-in value which will be given to in-store customers in the form of an e-gift card.
Alternatively, those who conduct an online trade-in will receive the payment into their bank account within three to five working days.

Once in the hands of the Currys staff, they will bring a new lease of life to the old tech by wiping all the data left on the device and either reconditioning it, recycling it or using parts of the tech for repair.
Currys will also take in any device even if it wasn't purchased at one of their stores. As long as the tech meets the list of requirements for their 'get a valuation' calculator, they are happy to allow shoppers to trade in any device with their service.
However, if the device is too faulty to meet the requirements, shoppers can still use the cash-for-trash service and get £10 off their next purchase.

Employers urged to allow flexible working hours as heatwave hits the UK

Employers must make sure outdoor workers are protected with regular breaks, lots of fluids, plenty of sunscreen and the right protective clothing. "With heatwaves becoming more common, we need to adapt. We need new laws on maximum working temperatures, improvements to workplaces to keep them cool, and climate action to reduce global heating." Rachel Suff, employee relations adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), added: "During periods of hot weather employers should take proactive steps to ensure the wellbeing and comfort of their staff. "This includes offering flexible working arrangements where possible, for example allowing employees to work from home if they are more comfortable and productive there, or flexible working hours where roles can't be done from home. ‌ "Commuting can be arduous in very hot weather, so allowing people to stagger their start and finish times can help them to avoid peak hour travel." Eurostar's £1.7bn plan to connect UK to two popular countries in just five hours

Following rising passenger numbers and impressive financial results, Eurostar is investing £1.7bn to launch a fleet of up to 50 trains that operate three new direct routes, including two from the UK Eurostar is ramping up its railway offerings as part of a major €2 billion (approximately £1.7bn) investment. Earlier this month, the company announced it would launch a fleet of up to 50 trains that will be in service from the early 2030s, operating three new direct routes. The announcement comes after Eurostar released its 2024 financial results, which found it had achieved an impressive EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) of €346 million (£296 million). ‌ In a press release, Eurostar said passenger numbers rose to over 19.5 million, marking a five per cent year-on-year increase. It follows the 'successful reinstatement' of direct services between London, Rotterdam and Amsterdam in February this year, which will see a fourth daily service added from September 9 and a fifth from mid-December. ‌ In the next decade, Brits will be able to hop on a train at London St Pancras and travel straight to Frankfurt in Germany. This city is known for homing one of the largest financial hubs in Europe, and has become a tourist hotspot in recent years thanks to its stunning architecture, ubiquitous history and close proximity to the ethereal Hohenzollern Castle. Alternatively, Brits will be able to head directly to Geneva in Switzerland, and marvel at the stunning Mont Blanc in the Alps. Geneva is an excellent base for ski enthusiasts, offering convenient access to a plethora of resorts including Villars, Gryon, and Les Diablerets. The upgrade will also see trains running straight from Amsterdam/Brussels to Geneva. Eurostar's CEO Gwendoline Cazenave said the company was witnessing 'strong demand' for train travel across Europe, with customers wanting to 'go further by rail than ever before'. "Despite the challenging economic climate, Eurostar is growing and has bold ambitions for the future," she added. "Our new fleet will make new destinations for customers a reality – notably direct trains between London and Germany, and between London and Switzerland for the first time. A new golden age of international sustainable travel is here." ‌ Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander also welcomed the announcement, describing it as a 'huge step in promoting green travel across Europe' as well as boosting the UK's international rail connections. " Today's announcement by Eurostar shows that the government's plan for change is rapidly strengthening the links between major cities in counties across Europe, creating more opportunities to travel, work, and socialise," the politician said. Eurostar's expansion comes as several companies are desperate to gain access to the Temple Mills depot in north-east London, which Eurostar currently monopolises. As previously reported, a report conducted by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) found: "There is some available capacity at Temple Mills International (TMI) depot for more trains to be stabled, serviced and maintained." ‌ The investigation is great news for Virgin Group, which says it is now 'ready to take up the challenge' of launching high-speed passenger train services through the Channel Tunne l. "The Temple Mills depot is the only facility in the UK which can accommodate European-style trains and claims suggesting it was at capacity have been blocking Virgin from coming to the line," a spokesperson said. "Virgin is therefore very pleased with the outcome and we thank the ORR for commissioning this report, which will now unlock competition on the cross-Channel route for the benefit of all passengers." Alstom, a French manufacturer specialising in locomotives, is also in talks to use its new Avelia Horizon trains to ramp up journeys across Europe. The company has already signed an €850 million (around £715 million) contract to provide and maintain 12 of its double-decker trains for a Proxima, a private operator in France - as well as France's state-owned company The Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF). Chief executive Henri Poupart-Lafarge says the new fleet could lower fares and increase capacity in the undersea Channel Tunnel, which connects the UK to France. However, it will first need to seek approval from regulators to make sure it adheres to strict Channel Tunnel safety rules.

Virgin Media explained: "Although we test our Hubs carefully at a range of temperatures, they are better off out of bright sunlight, just like your phone or laptop. "If the Hub gets too hot, it could slow down your connection or even grind to a halt altogether." However, the move isn't just as simple as stuffing the router somewhere dark and cold as this can have similar consequences. While you may think it is a good idea to stash the machine in a cupboard or behind the TV, this can still hinder your connectivity. ‌ This is because router's are stubborn machines that hate having their signal blocked. Instead they should be placed out in the open for the best speeds. Virgin Media said: "Good placement of the Hub could also mean greater WiFi reach. Don't stick the Hub in a cupboard or hidden behind your TV either." ‌ There are also other factors that can mess with your router, such as cordless phones, baby monitors and even fish tanks. For the best internet speeds, it is suggested: "The firmware in your Hub monitors the security for your network, so it's good to reboot your router once a month to make sure it's running with all the security patches and updates it needs." However, it should be noted that after a reboot it can take up to five minutes for the Wi-Fi to start working again. Therefore, it is probably best to wait to reboot the device when no one has any important calls or work to be done.
