'I was Verstappen's ally at Red Bull – I think he's going to retire this year'

Daily Mirror10-06-2025

Max Verstappen could retire from Formula 1 at the end of this season if former Red Bull Racing mechanic Calum Nicholas is to be believed, as he made a bold prediction on the Dutch-Belgian's future
Max Verstappen will retire from Formula 1 at the end of this season if Calum Nicholas' predictions are accurate. The 27-year-old Red Bull star, with four world titles under his belt, is believed by long-time mechanic Nicholas to be satisfied with his legacy if he can secure a fifth title by the end of the year.
During a round of golf with Lucas Stewart on his YouTube channel, Nicholas was asked to "fill in the blank" regarding how many F1 titles Verstappen will retire with. His response was simply: "Five."

Elaborating on his prediction, Nicholas boldly added: "I think Max is going to win the Drivers' this year, and then I think he's going to call it a day."

When questioned if he had insider knowledge that racing fans lacked due to his close ties with Verstappen, Nicholas replied: "No, I definitely don't know anything," maintaining an air of mystery around his prediction. He then added: "To not back Max is just lunacy."
It comes as Nicholas announced before the start of the 2025 season that he would be stepping away from the garage to take on a new role as a Red Bull Racing ambassador, concluding his 13-year career as a Formula 1 mechanic, reports the Express.
In a statement at the time, he said: "The time has come to hang up my race suit. It's a career that I'm incredibly proud to look back on.
"To all of those who've been a part of this amazing journey, thank you! For the last decade of my life I've been very fortunate to work with an incredible group of people, in a team like no other. So, today, I'm very pleased to announce that I'll be taking on an exciting new role, as a Red Bull Racing ambassador!"
Securing a fifth consecutive F1 title appears to be a Herculean task for Verstappen at the moment, given his unusual year so far.
At present, the defending champion is third in the Drivers' Standings with just two victories and four podium finishes, trailing McLaren's Oscar Piastri by 49 points.

Meanwhile, Red Bull are feeling the heat from a formidable McLaren in the race for the Constructors' Championship - currently lagging behind the seasonal leaders by 218 points.
Due to receiving three penalty points on his FIA Super Licence at the Spanish Grand Prix following his collision with George Russell, Verstappen is just one point away from a one-race ban which could further dent his chances of vying for the world title this year.

He will now have to maintain a clean record at the upcoming Canadian and Austrian Grand Prix to avoid such a scenario.
Under contract with Red Bull until 2028, Verstappen has also previously mentioned that he doesn't aspire to follow in the footsteps of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso by racing into his late 30s and 40s.
However, he is yet to announce a specific retirement date as speculation regarding his future continues to mount. After a 10th place finish at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Verstappen will be hoping for a stronger performance at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Sunday.

Rangers set to offer star man bumper new deal as Russell Martin plans to build team around fan favourite

The Belgium international cost £1.75million when arriving from Standard Liege in January 2023 and his value is soaring. Both sporting director Kevin Thelwell and the club's new US owners are determined to construct a far better transfer model. And they recognise there's a need to protect the club's interests while rewarding Raskin with increased terms. SunSport understands Thelwell is keen to tie down the 24-year-old for longer — and ensure any club coming in with bids know they'll have to be serious with their offers. Discussions have yet to kick off, but they are on the agenda. There is a belief the player is happy at Gers and open to agreeing an extended stay. News on Raskin came as Martin completed his first signing with a season-long deal for Bournemouth's Max Aarons. The clubs reached agreement last night for the 25-year-old defender but it's been reported there ISN'T a clause allowing for a permanent move. Aarons managed only four appearances for the Cherries last season before going on loan in January to La Liga outfit Valencia where he played five games. Rangers star Nicolas Raskin spotted at Disney World - before Wag turns trainer by putting him through his paces SunSport revealed Martin's interest in the full-back, a former England under-21 ace, at the start of the week. Now it's believed he's homing in on the signing of Peterborough United attacker Kwame Poku, 23, who is out of contract but will cost a cross-border fee in the region of £350,000. Having the ambitious Raskin put pen to paper would be welcomed by the supporters and viewed as a statement of intent equal to a new signing. Originally signed by Michael Beale, the tenacious Raskin was one of few stand-out performers in a trophyless 2024-25. He captained Gers to a remarkable 3-0 victory over bitter rivals Celtic in January. He then brilliantly opened the scoring in a 3-2 win over the champions at Parkhead in March. Even more impressively, Raskin is now beginning to establish himself as a key part of Belgium boss Rudi Garcia's plans. In World Cup qualifying earlier this month, Raskin shone in a 1-1 away draw against North Macedonia before proving a super sub in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Wales. Florian Wirtz details what Arne Slot did to persuade him to make Liverpool move

Liverpool have sealed the signing of Germany star Florian Wirtz in a club record deal worth an initial £100million, with a further £16m possible in add ons - after Kop boss Arne Slot compelled the player to head to Anfield Florian Wirtz has revealed how Arne Slot turned on the charm to persuade him to make Liverpool his new home. The Germany star has completed a club record move to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool have sealed a deal to pay an initial £100million, with £16m in performance-related add-ons. It is understood Liverpool will be happy to pay these 'aspirational bonuses' as it will mean they have enjoyed considerable success at elite level. ‌ If he does indeed hit all those bonuses, it will make Wirtz the most expensive player in British history, surpassing the £115m that Chelsea paid Brighton for midfielder Moises Caicedo. ‌ Wirtz, 22, has signed a five-year deal at Anfield - worth £50million. The Reds stepped up as Bayern Munich faltered, their 18-month pursuit coming unstuck as they played games in the German media with regards to what they would be prepared to pay Leverkusen, before Wirtz was left underwhelmed by a final meeting with head coach Vincent Kompany. In stark contrast both he and his family were blown away by Liverpool's pitch and particularly the first meeting with Dutch boss Slot. 'The conversations were always really good,' said Wirtz. 'I can remember the first time [we met] he already showed me some scenes and how he wants to play, how I could fit in the team. 'He was just telling me I'm a player he really wants to have in his team and I can bring the team a step forward, and I could just imagine it would be good to be in the team and to make it better. I have to make my performances every week but I'm here for this.' Wirtz admits he wanted to make a major step up when moving clubs this summer, and believes he has done just that by moving to Merseyside. ‌ 'I just thought that it was the right point in my career to make the next step and of course I wanted to get to a club that is from the top three in the world,' adds Wirtz. 'In my opinion, Liverpool is one of them. 'I just saw myself in the best hands in Liverpool. I was really convinced by the people here, by the idea, and everything what the club offers me was really good. 'Every time I spoke to one of the [people from] the club, I felt like 'this is the place I want to be. And so in the end, I was really 100 percent convinced I want to join Liverpool. And it was the best choice.' ‌ Wirtz has also been learning English ahead of his move - having been taught at Leverkusen by another Liverpool new boy, Jeremie Frimpong. "He was my neighbour in the changing room, he sat directly next to me and I had to speak English with him," Wirtz reveals. "After I finished my school, I didn't really speak good English but he was teaching me a lot and making me speak in more English and better English."

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CELTIC could miss out on Norwegian winger Sondre Ørjasæter with reports suggesting another club has jumped to the front of the queue to land the 21-year-old. We told you how Ørjasæter was a top target for Brendan Rodgers' side in December, and the Scottish champions later opened talks with Sarpsborg about a potential deal. Orjasaeter scored six goals in 32 appearances for Sarpsborg last season, with their campaign finishing in December. He started every league game and also played in five games for the Norway Under-21s. Since then the left winger's played seven games since the Norwegian league started at the end of March, with one goal and three assists. He picked up a thigh injury in the May against Brann Bergen, but the injury has now cleared and he is fit and raring to go again. And the interest in the young talent is ramping up, according to reports. TV Sport 2 in Norway reckons it would take a bid of more than £11million to prise the star asset away from the Eliteserien. Both French side Lille and Celtic are credited shown interest. But the report claims Dutch club PSV is now leading the race for his signature, and says Orjasaeter is open to the move as he feels the Eredivisie would suit his style of play. Ørjasæter told the Norwegian outlet: "Now I feel ready to take the step, while I am doing well here with full focus on Sarpsborg. It's not like I'll be depressed if there's no transition." If Celtic were to miss out on the 21-year-old they are also looking at other options, with Michel-Ange Balikwisha from Antwerp on Brendan Rodgers' radar. Meanwhile, the club announced their second signing of the summer on Friday as goalkeeper Ross Doohan rejoins the club he started out as a youngster. The 27-year-old arrives on a free transfer and has signed a three-year deal. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
