Misquoted on corruption charges but my sacking proves it is true: Govind Gaude

Former art and culture minister Govind Gaude on Sunday said that the narrative set by the media about the allegations of corruption in the tribal welfare department under CM Sawant, turned out to be true, and that is the reason he was sacked from the cabinet for speaking the truth.

Throughout his speech, Gaude said that he did not make any corruption charges against the tribal welfare department.
'This allegation has come out through the newspapers, and it is true. Because Govind Gaude spoke the truth, he was sacked,' Gaude said at a largely attended public meeting at Marcel.
Last week, CM dropped Gaude from his cabinet. Gaude had alleged about some behind-the-scenes operations. 'The files of the contractors are handled under the Shram Shakti Bhavan (from where the tribal welfare department functions) on the sly.
And they think we don't know of such things,' he had said at an event organised by the tribal welfare department in association with the United Tribals Associations' Alliance (UTAA) at Ponda.
In a defiant display of political strength, the former minister spoke days after his unceremonious removal from the cabinet. The independent MLA-turned-BJP member stopped short of directly accusing the party of ingratitude but made it clear that his contributions to the party's success went unrecognised.
Taking aim at BJP state president Damodar Naik without naming him, Gaude criticised his leadership for threatening action against him for his statements at a May 25 meeting without even giving him an opportunity to explain.
'Action against a minister for violating party discipline just for speaking out? And doesn't it amount to indiscipline for declaring action against me without even hearing me out over the issue? Now what action will be taken against him, I want to know,' he said.

Gaude defended his May 25 statements, saying he raised legitimate concerns about delays in processing Forest Rights Act applications and various tribal department schemes. 'Without addressing these issues, talking of taking action against me wasn't appropriate,' he said.
Gaude suggested he played a the crucial role in Sawant's elevation to the chief minister's position, claiming he was instrumental in preventing MGP's Ramkrishna 'Sudin' Dhavalikar from coordinating cabinet affairs during former CM Manohar Parrikar's illness.
'If Govind Gaude did not oppose this move, no BJP MLA would ever become the chief minister,' he declared, adding that he personally recommended Sawant's candidature to Parrikar.
The Priol MLA said he emphasised his loyalty when Sawant approached him for support. 'I told him, 'I would be proud to extend my support to my friend and former classmate. And I lived up to my promise,'' Gaude said.
Further, Gaude claimed credit for the narrow BJP victory in the 2019 Shiroda bypoll that consolidated Sawant's position as chief minister.
Despite being an independent MLA at the time, Gaude said he campaigned door-to-door for BJP candidate Subhash Shirodkar, who won by a mere 70 votes. 'My contribution to Shirodkar's victory was large. Even the BJP workers didn't work as hard as I did for the party's victory,' he said, describing how he went 'with folded hands canvassing' for the BJP candidate.
Gaude said that his decision to join BJP before the 2022 elections came with the condition that the elections are contested under Sawant's leadership. 'I joined BJP with the condition that the elections are contested under the leadership of

However, Gaude expressed frustration over being denied access to the party's central leadership despite repeated requests over the past 3.5 years. 'After joining BJP, I requested the CM and then secretary general of the party to arrange a meeting for me with the party's central leadership. It never happened,' he said.
Gaude said he wrote to the BJP national president J P Nadda and that he plans to send footage of his May 25 speech with translations to PM Modi, home minister Amit Shah, Nadda, and even the President of India, to clear any misgivings about him.

Tripura government gives jobs to 18 next of kin of victims murdered in political violence

The Tripura Government has started the process of distributing job offers to families whose members were killed in incidents of political violence before the incumbent alliance government came to power in 2018. Jobs were handed to 18 next of kin of the victims, which an official on Sunday (June 22, 2025) described as the first phase of such recruitment. 'A committee was constituted to provide government jobs to persons whose family members were victims of political murders. So far, the panel has received 39 applications, and out of these, 18 persons have been given jobs,' Tripura Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said at a press conference. 'Several families couldn't even file FIRs with police, and many case records are missing,' he claimed. The BJP-led government in December 2020 announced a scheme to provide jobs to next of kin of those killed in political violence over a period of 46 years with 2018 as the cutoff year. Thereafter, some jobs were disbursed to the affected families, but not blockwise like now. A State Government official said 18 aspirants who were selected from the list recommended by a committee which was earlier set up to identify the victim families. 'The primary consideration for recruitment is based on the financial condition of the families, but all those lost kin would also be considered in the next phases,' the official stated. The apparent policy of the State Government is to support only non-left families who fell prey to violence during previous CPI(M)-led governments. The victims, according to the official assessment, had been connected with the Congress party, as it was the main Opposition party in the state before 2018. CPI(M), now in opposition, alleged that the policy of providing government jobs only to non-left families is 'inhumane', as scores of left supporters were killed in political violence. A party leader pointed to targeted killings of left leaders, workers and supporters during the 'repressive' five-year rule of the Congress-TUJS alliance government from 1988 to 1993. Central Zonal Council meet: Shah to arrive in Kashi today

Shah's anti-English position harms India

Union Home Minister Amit Shah's denunciation of the English language is ill-conceived and uninformed, and will only work against the country's unity and development. Speaking at the launch of a book by a former civil servant in Delhi on Thursday, Shah said, ''The time is not far away for people speaking in English in the country to feel ashamed'. The prejudice against English is part of the ideology and politics of his party, and Shah has only given expression to it. He is right in saying that the languages of our country are the jewels of our culture, but wrong in dismissing the role of English as a linking and unifying language. He is also right in saying that we should take pride in our languages, but pride in one's own language need not translate into shame about another language. Languages are not zero sum games, and the knowledge of another language does not mean degradation or devaluation of the mother tongue. Languages gain by interaction. The usefulness and popularity of a language don't always depend on government policies. People's relationship with language is a sensitive matter and governments should handle it with care and caution. .Shah's tirade against English should also be seen in context of the efforts of the central government and the BJP to promote Hindi aggressively. This has resulted in apprehensions about domination of Hindi in non-Hindi states. English was the language of power in India during colonial times but after the British left, it serves as a link language, with an equal relationship with all languages of the country. The replacement of English would lead to its place being taken up by Hindi, which comes with political baggage. English is also India's window to the world in every respect, and closing that window would hurt and set the country back. Shah says India cannot be imagined with a foreign language. But the idea of India is not static--it has room for English, which is no longer considered a foreign language.
