Poland's manager Probierz resigns after row with Lewandowski

WARSAW : Poland manager Michal Probierz resigned from his position on Thursday, four days after star striker Robert Lewandowski said he will no longer play for the national team under him.
The 36-year-old Barcelona striker said his trust had been betrayed and he was very hurt by the way Probierz told him he was being replaced as team captain.
Lewandowski, Poland's record goal-scorer, said on Monday that he received a short call from Probierz as he was putting his children to sleep and that a statement about him losing the captaincy appeared soon after on the Polish Football Association website.
Probierz decided to replace Lewandowski as captain with midfielder Piotr Zielinski.
'I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of coach,' Probierz said in a statement.
'Performing this function was the fulfilment of my professional dreams and the greatest honour in my life.'

BERLIN, June 20 — Twelve days after winning her second Grand Slam title at the French Open, Coco Gauff fell at the first hurdle on grass in Berlin yesterday as beaten Paris finalist Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the quarter-finals. Former France striker Bernard Lacombe dies aged 72
LYON, June 18 — Former Lyon and Bordeaux striker Bernard Lacombe, who won Euro 1984 with France, died yesterday at the age of 72 after a long illness. Lacombe began his career with hometown club Lyon and had a brief spell at Saint-Etienne before joining Bordeaux, scoring 255 goals in total in the French top flight in 497 matches. Only Argentine Delio Onnis (299) has scored more goals in Ligue 1. Lacombe returned to Lyon after his playing career and served as manager between 1996 and 2000. "It's with immense sadness that we learned of the death of Bernard Lacombe," the club wrote in a statement. "Farewell Bernard, you were our legend, the greatest of all." Lacombe scored 12 goals in 38 appearances for France and started his country's 2-0 win over Spain in the 1984 European Championship final in Paris. — AFP
