Poland head coach resigns following Robert Lewandowski ultimatum on international exile

Michal Probierz has resigned from his position as Poland head coach, just four days after Robert Lewandowski said he would not play for the national side again unless he left. Barcelona striker Lewandowski, with 85 goals in 158 international appearances, is Poland's record scorer and appearance holder, but said on Sunday he had a 'loss of trust' in the management and would not play for the nation again until a coaching change. Advertisement Lewandowski, 36, cited 'physical and mental tiredness' after the conclusion of the club season for his exclusion for this month's matches against Moldova and Finland, prompting Probierz to replace him as national team captain with Inter midfielder Piotr Zielinski. That led Lewandowski to rule himself out of selection unless there was a coaching change, with Probierz's departure now confirmed. 'Performing this role has been the fulfillment of my professional dreams and the greatest honour of my life.' Probierz, who oversaw a winless Euro 2024 and group stage exit for Poland, was in charge for Tuesday's 2-1 defeat to Finland in the 2026 World Cup qualifier. Poland are currently third in the five-time group, trailing leaders Finland and the Netherlands, with six points from their opening three matches.
