SISD considering incentive payment for teachers who voluntarily leave their position
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Socorro Independent School District's (SISD) Board of Trustees will be discussing a proposal to offer a $2,500 incentive payment to 100 teachers and campus-based contract staff, who will voluntarily leave their positions at the end of the school year.
The measure will be discussed at a special board meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6 at the district's headquarters at 12440 Rojas Dr, El Paso, TX 79928.
If passed, this would grant teachers and select staffers the option to submit a Notice of Voluntary Separation to SISD, effective at the end of the 2024-25 contract year. The payments would be distributed to the first 100 select staffers to submit the notice.
This comes on the heels of the district approving a measure to lay off approximately 300 teachers and staff at the end of the school year, to address a projected $38 million budget shortfall that threatens to bankrupt the district.

Andrew Kim, one of two state-appointed conservators to oversee the district in the midst of their financial crisis, said two weeks ago after a board meeting that the layoffs are estimated to save SISD $30 million.
That would leave an $8 million shortfall that would still need addressing.

Veronica Hernandez, union president of the Socorro American Federation of Teachers, said that if passed the measure would be a welcome relief for teachers, but that it wouldn't do much to improve their situation.
'The morale, it's just really low right now, extremely low. So yeah, this is a little bit of help, but I mean, that's nothing for 100 people. What about the other 200-300 that (SISD) is going to let go? By the time unemployment kicks in, you're already going to be late on several bills,' Hernandez said.

City: Renting backyards, pools is prohibited
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The City of El Paso is launching a public education campaign to remind residents that renting out residential pools and backyards for events or parties is not allowed. The City said this is to ensure the safety and well-being of the community. 'When hot weather arrives, we see a rise in safety concerns, traffic issues, and disturbances stemming from residents renting out parts of their homes as entertainment venues,' Code Enforcement Director Steve Alvarado said. 'This summer to mitigate the issue, we are reaching out to residents to help them understand the law, and foster more harmonious neighborhoods.' Using residential properties as entertainment venues poses serious safety risks, excessive noise, traffic congestion, and parking problems, the City said. 'Violating this zoning regulation outlined in the El Paso City Code is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $2,000,' read the news release by the City. The City said increased enforcement will follow the campaign, which will utilize a variety of strategies to inform the public about the venue restrictions and how to access more information such as: Direct mail to all single-family residential properties with pools A robust social media campaign Website information In-person visits and written notices by Code Enforcement Officers However, these zoning regulations do not prohibit all celebrations, such as family parties or gatherings. The restriction applies when payment is exchanged for the temporary use of a home's backyard or pool as an entertainment venue, the City said. El Paso backs grant application to help fund I-10 deck plaza project
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso City Council voted on Tuesday, June 10, to formally support a grant application that could help fund part of the proposed Interstate 10 deck plaza. The multimillion-dollar plan is a major infrastructure project that would create a public space above the downtown stretch of the freeway. The application is for the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), a federally funded, state-administered grant. If approved, it would help pay for some features of the deck plaza, such as trails, sidewalks, and green spaces. 'This is just one little puzzle piece,' District 8 Councilmember Chris Canales said. 'But I've said from the beginning, I'd support this project as long as the money comes from state, federal, or philanthropic sources.' The application is due this month, and a decision is expected in October. If awarded, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) would take the lead on construction, and the City of El Paso would assist with project management. 'If we are awarded, there are a lot of other steps that need to happen for the council to enter into an agreement to use that funding source, and that's something that would happen in the future,' Joaquin Rodriguez, director of grant-funded programs for the city, said. This isn't the only funding the city is pursuing for the deck plaza. In May, the council also submitted a separate request for $4 million through the Community Project Funding program, which goes through U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, office. That funding would help cover structural elements like retaining walls and utility infrastructure. City officials add that both funding requests are part of a larger effort to move the multimillion-dollar project forward with the goal of using outside money to make it happen.
